    Madison Fatbiking

Hey all, I'm about to get a Pugsley and I'm wondering where people in Madison like to ride during the winter. What are your favorite spots? Ever ride on XC ski trails, or is that a no no?

In my opinion, there is no need to ride on the XC ski trails.

The singletrack at Blue Mound State Park, Cam-Rock, and Quarry Ridge gets packed by snow shoes and is really good.

I think you'll get push-back at the XC ski venues in town such as Elver, Pleasant View, Odana, etc...

Please read this blog about riding on xc ski trails. Particularly:

We need to acknowledge and use history to our advantage. We might as well be in 1988 with Fat Biking right now. The parallel to our history of summer Mountain Biking advocacy is so similar that we ignore it at our own peril. What did we do back then when we got our new toys? We ran right out and rode them on the Ski Trails and the Hiking Trails and just about anywhere else that they rolled. Damn the Torpedo’s.

Well eventually that caught up to us, we were shut out, told NO and we have been fighting ever since to be considered a relevant, sustainable and responsible recreational activity. This is exact same situation is occurring with Fat Bike and winter riding. The gear is ahead of the facilities in which to use it. Got your new Fat Bike? Want to ride it tomorrow after Forty inches of snowfall? Where you going to go? The place that you can most quickly get your ride on. Ski Trails, Snowmobile trails etc. This could be problematic for our future and certainly sets us up for confrontation.

Ok, so no riding on the XC trails. What about the unofficial places like Quarry Park or the woods by the Southwest Commuter Path, are there any other places like those or are they considered verboten as well?

Quarry Park is generally fair game.
