WRE to benefit Tompson St. land acquisition

The Wicked Ride of the East has typically benefited HP and other DCR parks by funding the NSNEMBA Trail Care program.

This year NSNEMBA intends to direct event proceeds to Essex County Greenbelt Association's Tompson St. Gateway Project.

Tompson St. Reservation is the largest property owned by ECGA and is home to the trail system better known by bikers as Bruce and Tom's. Located in West Gloucester MA, the reservation features some of the chunkiest trails around, some special views from two hilltops, and a unique landscape, in addition to significant ecological resources.

NSNEMBA has partnered with Greenbelt on numerous trail improvement projects over the years, at Tompson St. and other properties where we ride - Bald Hill Reservation, Willowdale Meadow, Willowdale Mill, Beverly Commons (Greenwood Ave.). They now need our help to complete the purchase of an important addition to Tompson St.

The added 6.5 acres of land will preserve the "back loop" near Concord St. and provide a dedicated trail access point and small parking area, something lacking at this point. Without the purchase, the land will contain yet another oversized house, the trail system on this end of the reservation will be interrupted, and the prospects for a proper access point diminished.

More info about the project is available here and on Facebook

We hope that you will come out to Harold Parker on 10/30 and enjoy a great day on the trails while also supporting an important land conservation project that will improve a popular riding area.

Greenbelt staff will be on hand to explain the project and will welcome additional donations to fund the land purchase.

    Cycle Loft Led Ride

Join Anthony and his Cycle Loft Crew for a led ride. See details below>

Cycle Loft -The Professional Choice - Full Service Bicycle Store & Expert Fitting Center, Burlington, MA

I was thinking either a 9:30 AM start or whatever works well with the general event schedule.

I was planning a moderate pace, with the goal being to do the entire marked route more or less non-stop. I would have the most fun at an intermediate plus ride level (plus by virtue of nearly-clean rides through all the hard stuff, and the overall distance and time rather than the speed). My longer rides at H.P. usually average 6.5 mph including stops and recovery sections.

I like to start at a pace that will be the same that we finish with, rather than a jackrabbit start that gradually degrades to a death-march by the end. Riders should be able to handle 95-100% of the technical, rocky stuff, but don't need to worry about a "race-pace" on any of the easy connecting trails and fire roads.

We'll take the majority of our breaks in the form of "rolling rest" on the fire roads and really easy singletrack, sometimes taking it right down to walking speed on the 20% of the route that falls into this category (in order to get the group bunched up before the next challenging bit).

In big groups that I lead, the front three or four riders should sometimes think the pace is a bit too slow. This will ensure that the back of the pack is working hard but not killing themselves to catch up after the inevitable bottlenecks a place like H.P. will create.

Of course, I'll try help on any mechanicals we encounter, as I'm as fast as most folks at fixing flats, etc.

The Wicked Ride is on for Sunday 11/6 at Harold Parker

    Hey Everyone,

The 12th Annual Wicked Ride of the East rides on this Sunday 11/6 at Harold Parker State Park.

We rode most of the loops last night and the conditions are AMAZING....No snow, just a dusting of leaves, and trails have been cleared of the debris. Compared to other Wicked Ride with heavy rain a day or two before, this years conditions could be the BEST EVER !!!!!!

Come to HP this Sunday to support biking, NEMBA, Essex County Greenbelt and to enjoy a beautiful day !!!!

If you can't make the ride but want to support the above, PM me and we can make arrangements to do so.

For Details see: Wicked Ride of the East

    Thanks
    Steve
