Sun. Aug 28: 2016 Treasure Valley Rally: Real Mountain Biking!

The 9th annual Treasure Valley Rally (TVR) presents miles of real cross country mountain biking in the heart of Massachusetts. Lots of singletrack, much of it purpose built for mountain biking, decent climbs, plenty of technical challenge, and a grassroots vibe coupled with swimming, food, and races for all ages means a super fun day out for a great charitable cause.

The 1,600 acre Treasure Valley Scout Reservation in the center of Massachusetts is rarely open to the public yet offers a solid trail network that's been honed for MTB over the last 10 years by riders from the Team BUMS mountain bike club and the Wachusett NEMBA chapter. We strive to provide a challenge appropriate to your ability with several course variants. The 10 mile main race loop will push you and your bike to your limits as the laps add up, but we have a shortened lap for novices, a much shorter lap for youth/first timers, and even a free small kids race through the woods.

Registration is at http://bikereg.com/tvr, register now for the best deal. Price is $29 now but increases to $35 on race day.

Here's what we've accomplished with your help, originally posted on the Treasure Valley Rally Facebook page:

WHY do we put on the TVR? Making a race happen is tough work, so why do we do this one? The money we've given so far (over $17,300!) has really helped Treasure Valley Scout Reservation. They now have a fleet of 20 working mountain bikes maintained by Downtown Putnam Cyclery, a handful of them brand new. They now staff (for the past 2 summers) a mountain bike program leader during Boy Scout summer camp and have offered the MTB program for that time. Scouts are going for and getting the MTB merit badge!

Team BUMS MTB Club has donated hundreds of hours over the past 10 years resurrecting, maintaining, and building the Treasure Valley trail network. There's now an official Trails Committee, a new trail map, a trail building school, a five year plan, new trail tools, a MTB building coming in the future, and there's a separate but related effort to improve the trails within the core of camp. Scouts are helping with trail projects and every year we get a big group of volunteers from Saint John's High School to help do trail projects. Plus, we're cross pollinating with local Wachusett NEMBA volunteers as well with the trail work.

In short, we see TVR as a driving force in growing mountain biking via the Mohegan Council, Boy Scouts of America as well as providing a resource for many other trail based activities at Treasure Valley! Please spread the word about what we're up to and see you August 28 so you can see it first-hand!

THANK YOU for your support, we can't do this without our sponsors, racers and volunteers!

    Pre-reg at http://bikereg.com/tvr and save.

    Thanks for reading and racing!
    Brett

I'll be there running the sport class, It's my first time on course and was wondering what to expect out of the terrain.

Not looking to be a hammerhead, my goals include:

    Finishing.
    Not dying.
    Eating 20lbs of hamburger after.

Those are the perfect goals for the TVR!

In summary, it's a challenging race but 100% ridable. It's probably best if you hear it from others:

Sounds good! I'm guessing it'll be 16 miles of unrelenting tech, much like the worst(best!) LSF has to offer.

See you guys out there, looking forward to it!

The 9th annual Treasure Valley Rally MTB race is coming up this Sunday, register at http://bikereg.com/tvr before noon Saturday or early Sunday morning on site.

Saturday there will be a SELF-GUIDED pre-ride of MOST OF the 10mile course. There will be a large Scouting group at the start/finish area by the beach and occupying all the fields above the beach, so we will be skipping a small portion of the course (info on that below).

Due to the other groups in camp, we have some important rules for this pre-ride:

Parking will ONLY be in the large field just to the right of the main entrance. Enter at 391 Pleasantdale Rd, Rutland, MA, proceed straight to the white house in front of you, then take a RIGHT and follow the short dirt road to the field and park there.

From the parking field, follow the paved road through the main archway/gate and down the hill. You will need to bear left at the Magee building to stay on the paved road. Follow the road past East Lodge on your right and down the hill after that. You will pick up the race course as it crosses the paved road JUST BEFORE the Commissary building. If you reach the end of the pavement and a bridge, you've gone too far.

Before you start the course to the right (following the course arrows from this point), take note of the lawn in between the Commissary and the water. This area is known as Pine Point and the course will return you to this lawn on a trail along the lake. This will be where you turn OFF the course and head back to your car up the paved road.

All pre-riders are asked to completely avoid what will be our race day start/finish, swimming beach, BBQ, and early parking area. You will be able to look at this part of the course early Sunday morning, but there are no surprises, only ~1/3 mile of gravel road and grassy field.

As stated earlier, this is SELF-GUIDED. Please come prepared with everything you might need including tools, tubes, pump, phone, and preferably a buddy. Any Scouts or Treasure Valley staff are not prepared to, nor are to be expected to, help riders as they have their own things going on. Please try to start between 9am and 4pm, everyone should be out of camp by 6pm.

Professionals can ride the full 10 mile lap in under 50 minutes. Most people take over an hour, some nearly two hours. It's a very technical course, true New England mountain biking, and there are some challenging downhills and uphills as well. Please be safe.

VERY IMPORTANT: Treasure Valley Scout Reservation is a Boy Scout camp on PRIVATE property. As such, it is normally CLOSED to the public with the exception of the Midstate Trail which passes through the west side of their land for approximately 3.5 miles. Please be respectful of this special permission we're getting to host a pre-ride prior to the event on Sunday. If people are not respectful of others within camp and the rules above, we may lose this opportunity.
