    FYI- Fells now open!

Fells is officially open! Mass parks just hasn't updated the website (gee thanks guys!)

    -------------------------------------------------------------------

    Original post:

So despite the fact that except for a few small soft areas (totaling maybe 50 yards of the orange trail) the fells is in GREAT shape, the DCR has decided to close the trails through the 27th or the end of the month (I've seen conflicting info).

This is a change from the reasonable closure that was through the 17th previously.

This isn't posted anywhere, including the info kiosk at the sheepfold, but I was informed by DCR rangers (thankfully after my ride, when the bike was already back on the car). The rangers said the 27th, the website now says end of the month.

The trails are in great shape so I don't know why they'd extend it, but you've been warned. That said, you definitely have plausible deniability since there are no postings, but my interactions with DCR have never been very friendly despite me always being respectful.

Thanks for the update. It seems a little extreme and honestly if it's too wet for bikes it's too wet for hiking/walking.

That was my info too @Leebo, which is why I waited until the 19th. Here's the info on the DCR page (on mobile it's at the very bottom).

Website is incorrect, as of April 18th, Fells open to biking. Took 1/2 of the bike loop home as part of my commute( yes, awesome) and was all dry except for a few wet spots on some double track. No mud on the down tube, left no ruts.

@leeboh not what the DCR rangers told me. It is very dry in there though and otherwise completely unsigned, so just be aware!

Trails are all in great shape, lots of people out today, hikers, bikers, dog walkers, joggers, everyone looking happy and everyone pleasant to me on my bike.

I passed a DCR(DPW?) truck on one of the fire lanes, and he didnt say a word to me, I just wished him a good morning. So get out there, it is awesome! First ride for me of the year on the Fells with my GoPro, so will share some more trail photos showing quality later.

Was informed by a reliable source that the trails are indeed bow open, but that DCR has been lax in removing the former ban notice on their website.

So, get out there and ride! Wednesday NEMBA rides are back as well.

I just got an e-mail back from MassParks saying that the Fells mud closure indeed ended April 18. Time to ride!

Updated original post. Sorry for the conflicting info, clearly communication from DCR has been insufficient. Get out there and ride!
