I was in Valley Ski and Bike Werks in Hadley two weeks ago or so and they were talking about it. Berkshire East purchased 30 or so bikes for use in the park. One of them was sitting in the back of the store. Looked pretty beastly compared to even the Enduro's that were sitting nearby.

I've never been to a bike park, but I'm hopefully I'll get to check this one out sometime.

Progress on the "Blue" Jump Trail. Only about 100 Yards completed, but it'll be pretty big...

I can't wait for this. Great location, decent vert, good trail builders. Should lighten the load from highland but it won't necessarily compete with other parks that exist...except for Jiminy, whose owners don't really care.

Can you use the chair lift for some of the existing xc trails?

Lee, once lift access begins, all existing XC trails on that side of the valley will be accessible from the lift. Until then, guests can either ride or shuttle up.

Details being released on Facebook. Like Thunder Mountain Bike Park. We will start up construction again as soon as the snow and mud subside. That will determine opening schedules.

The mountain is looking for qualified patrollers starting late June. Current 80+ hour emergency first aid certification required (EMT, OEC, WFR or more). Message if you're interested.

July 1 opening. Lee, resort is located on Thunder Mountain Road. Thunder Mountain was the original name of the ski hill from opening until the mid-80s.

Could still use a few more workers for the park. Lifties, trail crew, perhaps a few more patrollers.

Trails are nearing completion, employees have been riding them in, defining lines in the Loam, testing the launch angles, filling holes, clearing site lines, All that finishing stuff.

Getting real excited for opening week. Western Mass is the place to be 4th of July weekend.

We'll have a booth with photos, videos, discount tix, T shirts etc. at Nembafest this weekend. See you up there.

Will there be any natural downhill trails or are they all buffed out bike parky trails?

There's some awesome true singletrack from the top, and at least one that's a hybrid of singletrack and machine built. Very technical.

You can also hit the XC trails from the lift, which are similarly fantastic, up or down.

IMHO, Billy's World, which runs off from the top (and I imagine will be accessible from the lift served stuff), is one of the best naturally gnarly xc/downhill trails in the East.

I wouldn't rate it higher than an intermediate.. similar in difficulty to Lower Jester at Burke or Cat's Paw (?) at Highland-- but better than both of those. Definitely not "buffed out".

That sounds awesome. That is more what I am looking for. According to a trail map that I found Billy's World looks pretty long as well.

One of the reasons I like it so much. It really takes its time getting down the mountain. The switchback section in an old hardwood stand is one of the highlights. Really impressive.

What a coincidence you guys are talking about Billy's today. 3 of us roughed in the connnector from the lift to the lower entrance to Billy's today. It will be listed as an Enduro trail on the maps (pedalling required) and will be "Outside the park, not patrolled", but easily accessible. We're rating it as a Black Diamond, because of the extended rock ledge sections, switchbacks and bridges.

Working on another short black diamond rough ST connector tomorrow on the lower mountain. That should get our trail count to 12 or 13 if we count everything "In the park" another 3 or 4 if we add in the XC downs Dangur mentioned. All are definitely worth hitting while in town.

I can see a black diamond rating. There are some tricky corners in addition to the ledges. And the bridges. My last trip I managed to take a dive off of one of them. There was some nice soft deep mud to cushion the landing though.

I hope to get out there for a ride this Friday. I'm looking forward to seeing the progress on the new stuff.

Any camping options nearby or in the parking lot? Any swimming holes nearby? Any named XC trails I can look up online or get some local advice? I'm looking to plan a weekend trip with the buds.

The tubing lot at Berkshire East has camping. It's particularly convenient due to close proximity to the bar in the lodge, which is open till 10:00PM. No facilities, though, once the lodge closes.

Berkshire East and Zoar sell trail maps, which are probably your best bet for learning the names of trails. However, things have been rerouted some and it sounds like new stuff is still being built, so the map is not 100% up to date. Good enough to get you around though.

    Also, GPS:
    Strava Global Heatmap

I recommend starting on the South side. Ride up Silver Doe or Wildnerness Brook (Silver doe may be easier and a bit more fun). They're on the west side of the mountain. Play around on top - there's a nice loop up there, but without a map with trail names it's hard to explain... You can probably pick it out from the GPS tracks though.

Good luck on the North Side. Brutal climbs, and it's harder to string together a nice see-it-all loop. Although some of those trails are a scream - hit Red Zone from the top

    Enjoy.

Going tomorrow... is Billy's World the best "open" trail? Easiest route up? Don't have the entire day to get lost unfortunately.

They're all good, but Billy's is my favorite way down on the South side. Easiest way up is Silver Doe. Buy a map.

Thanks! I made it out & had a great time. The map certainly helped.

Looking forward to lift service on future trips. I'll be back again after my trip up North.

Im not sure of trail names, but they destroyed the best trail in the place. There was an XC trail on the backside of BEast that we used to use to climb up on.. To be honest, even though it was a climb trail, it was the best trail in the entire system in my opinion. That trail was always the highlight of my day, and now it's destroyed. Hopefully to fix it back up and provide signage so it can at least be ride able once again.

    Pauldotcom,

Actually, a lot of work has gone into rerouting and reestablishing that climb over the last few weeks. The 'Wilderness ledges' portion of the climb is probably gone forever (and that is unfortunate), but the Hawks Brook and Wilderness climb have been expanded and reestablished as has the extensions on silver doe. We climbed it last thursday, bottom to top…it was good.

In all likelihood the best portions of Wilderness Ledges will be reincarnated as a Black DH Single Track this summer.

As Superbman said, we've spent a bunch of time re-routing the portions of Wilderness Brook and Silver Doe that were overtaken by the beginner flow DH or included as part of the Blue DH single track. That re-routing is almost complete, only about 30 yards left to grub, bench and harden up. In the mean-time there is a temporary connection that works, though is a bit steeper than we'd like (so will be permanently closed once the new grubbing and bench cutting is completed).

Nice meeting you last Friday Harold. I had a great ride. Only a couple moist spots, but given the weather lately you can take that as a huge compliment. Estranged Moose and Billy's World were running really well.

Grand opening is tomorrow! We got torrential rain today, but crews were out making sure drains were clear, and fixing late arriving puddles all day. We'll be at the hill before 7:00 to assure all trails open tomorrow, it is possible we might have to delay a few until afternoon if the sun isn't cooperating early in the day.

@Pauldot, We had a good crew out today (thanks Cindy, Colin, Robert and Eric) working on Wilderness and Silver Doe. I taped all the unclear sections just as the torrential rains arrived this afternoon late.

XC riders are no-longer required to cross Bike Park trails, and once again have 100% single track for their climb. Some sections are still a bit soft, as is always the case with new bench cuts, but we expect many riders which will pack things down a lot over the next few days.

Should be a great weekend in Charlemont.

How'd opening day go? I would've been there, but I've been up I'm Waterville Valley for the last week. Rode the Snows Mtn lift access trails today & hope to hit Highland before I return to Mass.

Super excited to come check out the trails!

So y'all are closed on Mondays now... that throws a wrench in my plans!

When do your 1/2 day hours start? Thinking Thursday might be my next available option.

Per the website, operating hours in August are noon to 7 Wednesday to Friday, Saturday 10 to 6 and Sunday 10 to 5. Weekday half day starts at 4, weekends at 1.

    All subject to change.

Thanks... saw the new hours, but I didn't see any mention of 1/2 day hours.

Had a free day today & came out! Glad I did... some great trails with a lot of variety. Met some quality people out there today as well. I did somehow ended up getting a front flat that I didn't know about till the bike fell when unloading, scratching the roof on the Subaru. It was a little soft when loading, but completely flat by the time I got home to Hardwick. "F" word!

Great job with the park. A real nice balance between the jump trails and the steep and techy DH single track trails. Great investment with Gravity logic. The berms and jumps on Blue Pulaski and Gronk are perfect. The trail selection stikes a nice balance between what Sunday River and Highland have to offer.
My only complaint, 16 minute lift ride up. On a busy day like it was yesterday it could be a 1/2 hr between runs while standing in line and riding the lift.
Defiantly check this place out. You won't be disappointed. I'll be back next year for more of the Shisht.

About the time on the lift. The family told me they'd rather spend the $ building trails than buying and operating a high speed detatchable. Not a bad choice in my view. Those whistler guys don't come cheap, but they sure do rock!
