    2020 Rift Zone Details and Hawk Hill 3 Color

    I spoke with my Marin dealer. The Rift Zone is going to be redesigned for 2020. It is going to be slacker in line with the Hawk Hill. He also said the seat post is going to be more upright. The drive train will most likely be Eagle SX to SLX 12 speed. Right now Marin is in the planning stages with concept art and hopefully the bike will be ready by the end of the year. Not sure about the fork at this point. It could be a Bomber Z2 as companies like Orbea are using them now

    As for the Hawk Hill 3, the color is said to be Black with Purple and Yellow. It follows the same vein as Matt Jones customer Alcatraz.

    If I hear more, I will let you know.

    Figured that would happen. Would be sweet to see the Rift Zone as a 140/130 trail 29er, which would certainly be a step in the right direction, especially if they can keep the price ranges the same.

    I called Marin directly last month and asked about the 2020 RZ and if it was going to be updated or largely remain the same. Along with what willmbrk said about the geometry, they also said that travel will increase to 130mm up front and 0.5 (or 5mm, can't remember) in the rear. The rep also said that they will be coming out with a carbon version as well. This sounds just about right considering Matt Cipes is the product manager (That came from Specialized) and is doing great things at Marin. Now that it's been a few years and he has a baseline for all the models as well as market/rider feedback, he is able to update and work his magic for the lineup. I'll be excited to see the geometry changes (especially the steeper seat tube angle).

    On a side note, I have a 2019 RZ2 and I've have had the best time on this bike than almost any other FS 29er (and 27.5) bike I've ridden or owned in the past (Giant Anthem/XTC/Reign, Specialized Stumpjumper/Enduro/Camber, Trek Rumblefish/Fuel/Remedy, Santa Cruz Bronson/5010).

    I have done the following that might have something to do with how great it handles and rides:

    Fox Rythym fork 130mm
    Fox Dpx2 rear shock
    WTB Asym i35 wheelset
    Chris King ISO B rear hub
    Magura MT5 4 piston brakes F&R
    11-46 Cassette w/stock 30t chainring

    The Rift Zone definitely seems to achieve a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. Seems to be true of all of the recent Marin lineup on the lower end.

    there have been carbon RZ models in the past. i think latest was 2016 or 2017?? but i haven't found much written about them one way or the other.

    No real details yet, but it is confirmed to be coming. Also, the Hawk Hill 2 will have a SX 1X12 and the Hawk Hill 3 is supposed to get SLX 1X12 with a Bomber Z2 fork with SLX 3 piston brakes.

    Any more news on this? Iíve got the green light to buy a new bike and am wondering if the new Rift Zone might be available soon (I.e within my window)?

    I asked last week as I was ordering a specific part for the bike and the rep told me that they should be announcing the new 2020ís on their website ďat the end of the month, or relatively soonĒ. Iíve been checking Marinís website everyday since 😂

    Marin website will be updated September 1st. The bikes are shipping out now. My Marin dealer is upset because they do not even know what the rest of the bikes will look like.

    Looks just like the 2019 Hawk Hill 3. Of course it is designed to around the same specs. The rear shock is 5m less than the 2020 Hawk Hill. Marin is now saying late September for release dates. Funny that I know more about the bike than Vital.

    Guess I was ahead of the production lines when I upgraded my 2018 RZ2 with a 140mm fork, GX Eagle and 4 piston calipers front/ rear. Nice to see Iím not missing out to much on the newer version other than some Geometry numbers.

    The jump to the Fox Float DPS is big though for the production side of things. The last few years itís just been the RockShox Deluxe RT which is just giving you a 2 position compression knob for open/ pedal compared to the Deluxe R that came in the Rift Zone 2.

    Did anyone notice that the 2020 RF has cs length listed as 425??? and the 2020 HH as 430? How does that make any sense (unless its a typo from 435)?

    The RZ is even slacker by 1* compared to HH. Kinda weird. Usually the 27.5 have slacker HA than the 29.

    Looks like it's a $850 up charge (RZ3 alloy = 2650 to RZ1 carbon = 3500) for carbon with the same part spec. The RZ2 carbon looks rad, and nice to see they're using a microspline hub and SLX cassette rather than sunrace, but $4300 seems pretty steep.....

    i think i would be leaning toward a YT Jeffsy CF Comp at ~$3500 or the YT Jeffsy CF Pro at ~$4000 if i was looking for CF in this price range. But actually, i dont think you can lose with any of these bikes.

    I ordered a RZ 3 last week, i was told at least 6 weeks lead time. Apparently there is an issue with one particular component (My dealer was not told which one) not being ready. I'm very curious to see what brakes I end up with, The PB posted pics show a mid perch deore level lever but the specs on Marin's site claim Shimano MT420 which I think are lower level items. Gonna be a long wait...

    Rift Zone is longer, slacker, steeper STA so it gets my vote. Giant looks like a great deal though. I personally found the climbing on a carbon version to be mediocre. STA on Marin really seems to be in the sweet spot.

    The trance 3 comes with the drive train and similar brakes of the rz2. The trance 3 is best compared to a rz2.5. haha. But, seriously, the overall package is worth the extra price for me.

    My friend has the 2019 Trance 29 and it what made me want a rift zone.

    The Pine Mtn One (Didn't see the PM or the PM2) is now showing as a 29'r with 2.6 tires and an enduro h-bar set up for bed-roll packing.
    More eyelets too. Maybe I'd get used to the new frame graphics but I like the simpler look to the '16 or '17 - '19. Also, happier with a 27.5 plus.
    Maybe b-packer set ups are in a transition ?

    ** Update Here is a link showing a PM1 and PM2. Looks like dropper post routing and the narrative on these is more trail handling / trail capable spirit - even commuter but still the camper / packer features. 29 x 2.

    I'd been thinking of getting a 29er since converting my Pine Mountain to a 29er. I liked the slackened HT angle on the Trance. I looked at the 2019 RZ3, but it had the same HT angle as my Mount Vision. It also was 120/120, and I kinda wanted the 130 that the Euro models were spec'd with. So, when the 2020 RZ3 came out it was pretty much what I was looking for. The SLX 12 speed was a bonus for me as I'm a Shimano guy.

    So I'm kind of on a budget, I've noticed that my rear brakes on my hh1 are not very powerful but I can't really spend the money on new brakes. I heard people just changeing the pads and rotors. What would be a decent rotor? I'm looking to upgrade to a 180 for the rear. Any help would be appreciated!

    They are supposed to be out any day. I know that San Diego is having a Marin demo day in 2 weeks where the Rift Zone will be available to ride. I also know what the Hawk Hills are in the US now. The Hawk Hill 2 are on the West Coast and the Hawk Hill 3 are on the East Coast. My son's Hawk Hill 2 should be ready next weekend with my Hawk Hill 3 just a few days after.

    I went ahead and ordered the Hawk Hill 3. I'm not really a big fan of the pink on the frame, but I think I'll get used to it (or I'll vinyl wrap that section maybe). Looking forward to it.

    Mine should be ready in the next week. My Marin dealer just ordered it. I have pink Raceface Chester pedals and Pink DMR Deathergrips coming as well. My son's HH2 should be in around the same time. We are going more stealth with his, black pedals and grips.

    Has anyone ordered a rift zone ? I think iíve been waiting almost 5 weeks for my RZ3 and was told that Marin was going to release the RZ1 then the RZ2 and finally the 3. Iím hoping someone may have ordered a 1 or 2 and actually received their bike, would possibly give me a timeframe of my bikeís arrival date.

    Word around town is late October and November. There was a quick leak of the Carbon Rift Zones, but those were pulled. Word on the Carbon ones are summer next year. Marin is so off on their time tables and it is frustrating.

    Geez, thatís a lot later than I was hoping, but unfortunately itís what I was expecting. I keep telling myself Marin isnít Trek or Specialized and delays would probably be part of the deal. Hopefully the RZ is worth the wait.

    I got mine on Friday. I went on a 12-mile ride yesterday. I felt a little mixed on the bike. It didn't feel as plush as I was hoping even though it seemed like I was using the full travel on the rear shock (I did try it in both the middle and full open settings). I haven't done any tuning to the suspension yet (it was setup initially according to my weight), so hopefully something can be improved there. It does feel more capable at climbing in technical sections than my old bike (2009 Jamis XCT 2.0), due at least in part to the larger wheels, though it felt less efficient. Not sure how I feel about the wide bars, but I didn't really mind them. I may cut them down later. The brakes felt great as did the drivetrain. I was surprised by how heavy the bike is - I weighed it at 33.3 pounds with pedals. I ran it with 23 psi in the front and 25 in the rear, same as my old bike. I may try a little less and see if that helps the ride. It does feel better the harder you push it, though, and I love the look of it.

    Nice. Can't wait to get mine. My pink pedals and grips are in. My son's HH2 is a blast to ride. It really likes to jump. My local bike shop is really great at setting up the suspension correctly. I am going to have them cut the bars to 760 mm as that it what is comfortable. Of course, the stock bars won't stay on too long.

It does feel more capable at climbing in technical sections than my old bike (2009 Jamis XCT 2.0), due at least in part to the larger wheels, though it felt less efficient. Not sure how I feel about the wide bars, but I didn't really mind them. I may cut them down later. The brakes felt great as did the drivetrain. I was surprised by how heavy the bike is - I weighed it at 33.3 pounds with pedals. I ran it with 23 psi in the front and 25 in the rear, same as my old bike. I may try a little less and see if that helps the ride. It does feel better the harder you push it, though, and I love the look of it.

    As I wait for my RZ 3 these comments concern me a bit. I am really hoping for decent suspension, especially after hearing the reviews on the Bomber Z2. Hopefully some tuning will help. The weight seems a little on the heavy side as well, especially with my 29Ē wheels.

    I run a Z2 on my San Quentin and it is awesome. My son's HH is so much fun and really does not feel or ride heavy at all. Yes the Z2 can be an issue if not tuned correctly. I had the same problem. I had my shop tune my Z2 on my San Quentin and it rides like a dream now.

    They set the fork to my weight, but they also set the handlebars and seat. They also checked my posture to make sure I was riding correctly. Now everything is set perfect for me. I don't even need to use tokens. Also, as for the weight of the HH, take the tubes out. They are pretty heavy.

    Take what I've said with a grain of salt. I think I just need to spend some time on it and get it set up properly. As for the weight I don't think it really feels that heavy riding it, I just didn't expect it to weigh this much. Apparently the tires are pretty heavy, though, so you could probably take at least a pound off with different tires. And I'm not saying the suspension was bad, I was just expecting it to be more of a change over my old bike. I think I also need to try lower psi in the tires.

    I'll post up some pics and I'll try a video of the hub tomorrow after I pick it up. It's at the shop waiting for a new chainring.

    The levers look like m7000 slx reservoirs with bigger two finger levers. Not sure how I'll like them, but I'll give them a shot. If I don't, I'll just get the new four piston slx.

    I rode it around the parking lot, but I didn't pay attention to the hub.

    Just picked up my Hawk Hill 3. Man the thing is really supple and smooth. The bike feels so light and easy to jump. The only thing that trips me out is that it is so quiet. My San Quentin is really loud. I love the Z2(have same on my San Quentin) and the huge 203 and 180 rotors with 4 piston brakes. I do like the smaller brake levers that I put on my San Quentin and I prefer the PNW loam lever on my San Quentin. The SLX 1X12 shifts smoother than my XT 1X11 as well. Overall, it is a killer bike for the spec. Heck, even my son's Hawk Hill 2 is really sweet for the price.

    First impressions:
    It's a Medium and fits like my 2015 Large Mount Vision.

    It has a rubber chainstay cover

    Brake levers are more comfortable than I expected, but still not SLX/XT

    Brake pads are unusually think

    No quick release, both axles are bolts

    Suspension is more active/plush than my old Mount Vision

    It's bright orange

    I feel the same. Can't wait for Hope Hubs to come out. Feels so weird to be so quiet. I also prefer the smaller brake levers. Overall, the price for the build is perfect and solid. I cannot complain.

    Thanks for all the posts, I did actually get my RZ as well. Mine feels like it has a decent amount of stiction on the fork and dropper post, should break in Iíd think. Iím not super impressed with the brakes so far, the lever comes almost to the bar before they bite the rotors. Iím going to ďoverfillĒ the master cylinders and hopefully get a better bite point. The bike is way slacker than I was expecting, gonna be a big change from what Iím used to, but Iím looking forward to it (all my other bikes are more XC than I thought, LOL). I was a bit surprised by the all steel cassette, I donít even see that listed on the SunRace website, maybe an OEM only piece. Overall Iím very impressed by the build quality of the bike, kudos to Marin for this bike at this price. Im off to convert to tubeless this afternoon, Iím looking forward to hearing ride reports from everyone.

    I got a ride in this morning, 12 miles with 1500' of climbing. Here's my thoughts.
    *This thing rolls over everything. Technical sections that used to be difficult are super easy to pedal through.
    *The rear is WAY more active than my last bike. I found myself flipping to trail on climbs and open on decents. Not a bad thing, just different because I never touched my last shock.
    *It's so smooth it's like I'm going slow. On the sketchy downs at speed, I used to brake check all the time. I kept having to tell myself not to touch the brakes because I'm so used to doing it.
    *Bigger tires are definitely heavy. I felt the difference on the climbs. It wasn't awful, but just not as sprightly as my 27.5 was. Wheels are totally fine, but I'm already considering getting a lighter wheelset.
    *My brake levers are totally firm. Sounds like you may have a bad bleed job? I was happy with their power. It took some adjusting to get the levers where I wanted them.
    *My dropper is very smooth. It could be your clamp is too tight. Mine bound up when I adjusted the seat height. I had to back it off a little to get the smooth action back.

    I adjust the location, but there is also a 2mm hex inside the lever by the clamp that you can adjust the lever distance to the bar.

    I broke in the HHs today. Holy crap what a fun ride. We took them through the paces bombing big down hills with insane boulders and ruts. I was scared at times, but the bike did not waiver at all. Best ride today by far. Cannot speak enough good things about these bikes. I am seriously considering if I even need my San Quentin still. My HH3 is so agile for a full suspension. I can't believe how easy it is to get in the air yet it is so supple.

    The wheel/tire weight is the first thing I want to change. New wheelset first. Probably ride these VEEs for a minute, but I just looked and they weigh 1080g. If I swap to Dissectors, I can save 1/2lb per tire. Dissectors will be on my christmas list.

    Wait until next year for the wheelset because Shimano just loosened their patent on their microspline hubs. Hope is going to have their hubs in January. Unless you want to go DT Swiss or I9. As for the tires, the Vees are ok tubeless. If I changed them, I would go 2.5 DHF and 2.4 DHR2. I want to change out the handlebars, stem, and seat eventually as well. The I9 A35 pink stem would look so cool on my HH3.

    I want to say they are around 33 lbs if you keep the tubes in. Probably around 30 without. I looked at Giants as well as my friends have them. I even rode my friends Trance. These bikes smoke the Giants. The build spec and geo are spot on. The HH and RZ are almost the same side. The RZ has a little more reach and travel.

    I like the color of the Rift Zone 1 more than the 2. I wonder if the upgrades are worth it. There's the dropper, the different rear shock, the 12 speeds instead of 11, and the crankset. I wonder if the crankset is really an upgrade. Is the rockshox shoxk really better than the X-Fusion? Hmmmm

    If you have the parts or money then yes. My Marin dealer bought a HH1 because he liked the purple. He stripped it down and put in a DVO suspension and a ton of other sick parts. The bike is so sweet.

    I couldn't help myself. I ordered new wheels, tires, and cassette. Wheels are Stan's Flow with Shimano XT microspline hubs and XT cassette. Tires are Maxxis Recon MaxxTerra. Saved about 2.5 pounds on this. Bike currently weights about 31.5 pounds according to the highly inaccurate bathroom scale.

    Nice! Have you noticed better shifting under load? That's supposed to be one of the benefits of having the actual Shimano cassette.

    Most definitely has crisper shifting now. It was a little finicky downshifting on all the gears. I had a lot of hesitation dropping from 2 to 3 with the sunrace cassette. That's gone with the XT cassette. Plus I'm sure it's way lighter than the all steel sunrace.

These Rekons seem like a good fit for my terrain and riding style. I'm sure that's where most of my weight savings came from. I'm still adjusting to the 65.5 HTA. This thing is super stable, but it doesn't steer quickly like my Mt. Vision. I've caught myself out of position a few times because I'm anticipating quicker steering response.

    It was super sluggish with the stock tires. It didn't carry any momentum. I had to pedal if the trail ever remotely flattened. Those VEE tires would be fine if I only did shuttle runs, but I like to pedal to the top to earn my downhills.

    I just looked at the VEE specs again, and I think the 29 version is actually 1270g. The 2.4 29 Rekon is supposed to be 840g, so I think i saved 430g/15.16oz/.95lb. No wonder it pedals and rolls so much better now.

    Yep. The 27.5 is around the same. The Vee tires are around 2.5lbs each. One of mine weighs as much as both of my friends 26" tires.

    I just looked at the VEE specs again, and I think the 29 version is actually 1270g. The 2.4 29 Rekon is supposed to be 840g, so I think i saved 430g/15.16oz/.95lb. No wonder it pedals and rolls so much better now.
    Out of curiosity where are you finding the specs for the tire at 1270g?

    990 is for the 24X2.4. Trust me, those tires are heavy as all get out. My new tires should be coming in the next few days. In the meantime, I am riding and have fun with my San Quentin.

    I got my Rift Zone 2 yesterday. Something wierd is going on with my suspension. It feels incredibly stiff. I noticed it the second I sat on it. Felt like a hard tail. Didn't sink into the travel at all. And there was a suction noises when I get off the bike.The online place I bought it from set up the suspension using my given weight. I'm not sure what's going on with it.

    I rode a Rift Zone 1 on two separate occasions at the local shop and it felt great. I went with the 2 for the dropper, extra gear, and I what I was hoping was a better shock. Now I'm worried. I hope this Rockshox irear shock s better than the X Fusion, and I didn't make a mistake in going with the 2.

    Did you check air pressure and rebound speed? Worth contacting the online shop as new suspension parts should be under warranty as there is always the potential for a lemon.

    He bought it online.

    First thing I would do is check to make sure the lockout isn't closed. Does it have lever on the shock for lockout?

    Second thing I would do is check the air pressure in the shock. You will need a shock pump for that. Go buy one from your LBS.

    Third thing, maybe at the same time as second thing. Have the LBS adjust the pressure in the shock for you. If the shock is defective, they should also ber able to help you with getting that fixed, but be warned they might not appreciate that you bought online instead of from them.

    I've got a shock pump of course. I'll play with the shock pressure later. I see they sent the bike with the rebound set really fast. I can try messing with that too. The weather here is garbage right now, so I can't try it on on any trails. Sucks. We had our first snow.

    I bought it online because it was an insane deal. I was able to flip my old bike for more than this one, so I actually made a little money for getting a new bike. If not for that I would have bought it from the local shop.

    Just got rid of the boat anchors. 2.5 DHF and 2.4 DHR2. Rolling resistance is night and day. I did weigh the Vee and they were 985g, but I swear they feel heavier.

    I bought the 2020. I was going to flip my old bike and get a Rift Zone 1 from either the local shop or Jenson. Would go with the local shop, but paying taxes made Jenson more appealing. Then I found a better deal than both and bumped up to the Rift Zone 2.

    That's the deluxe r with debonair can, so only rebound and no lockout or trail mode. Should be a good shock as long as you don't need the additional modes.

    I have the RZ3 with the fox dps. It has open/trail/climb modes. I do flip from open to trail depending on if I'm climbing or descending.

    Sweet! I'm glad to hear they're a solid improvement. I just got some new tires as well, which I'll be mounting tomorrow. I got a Tioga Glide G3TT for the front and a Schwalbe Rock Razor for the rear. The trails are pretty mild around here so I thought I'd give a semi-slick a try. The Tioga weighs 778 grams and the Schwalbe is 717 grams so a good bit of weight savings and they should roll a lot better. I'll report back once I get them on.

    It does make me wonder why Marin decided to equip the bike with the Vees. I get that their tires cost less than most and so it probably allowed them to keep the price down, but it just seems like a rather poor choice for such an important part on the bike. The only other thing about the spec I don't like was the choice to go with the SunRace cassette, which wouldn't be quite as annoying if it had a Micro Spline hub making it easier to upgrade, but of course it doesn't. Neither are dealbreakers to me, but I won't be surprised if the next year's spec will include changes to both of those.

    Yeah I hear you. I want to put an XT Cassette on it. The DHF/DHR is freaking amazing. Rolls so much faster and grips like a beast. Best upgrade so far. I also want to check out the Hope hubs when they come out in January.

    Update on my Ride Zone 2 and the suspension issues. I got to take it on its first ride on a trail today. I was looking at the rear shock and it looks like I was reading it wrong. I thought they sent it to me with the rebound speed cranked way up since it was set at the rabbit. But if you look closer the rabbit was at the top because it was actually turned all the way toward the turtle. So I thought it was set at very fast rebound, but it was actually at it's slowest. That may explain why it felt so odd. I put it in the middle on its first ride and it felt way better. And the stiction that seemed to be in the fork totally disappeared after a little time on the trail. Bike felt great. I still have some fine tuning to do, but I'm happy now. Bike is a ton of fun. I may add a higher rise handle bar, but other than that I loved everything. I went from a large bike to this bike in XL. Gonna take a bit to get used to the new riding position. So far, I love the bike. It was a steal for what I paid.

    An RF 3 strikes me as a deal that's hard to beat for someone looking for modern geo and solid component spec, especially when comparing the RF to what I'd consider comparable-ish bikes (SC Tallboy, Trek EX 8, Kona 134 AL/DL, Commencal Meta TR). At 6'4", I'm psyched by the short seat tube, steep seat tube angle, and long reach in XL. You could get an RF 3, upgrade wheels, tires, and cassette as needed, and it seems like you could have a bike that needs very little for around $3000.

    I've thought of getting a few other things like SLX brakes and a longer dropper, but the current brakes and dropper work perfectly fine for me.

    I love the RZ3 for me, but the color of the Carbon RZ is amazing.

    To use the Shimano cassette, you'll need a micro spline hub. I bought new wheels with the new xt microspline hub.

    If you want to go a cheaper route, you can get a 12 speed cassette that fits the old hub. I believe the SRAM GX/NX cassettes will work. It will be the same 11-50 because the hub isn't small enough for a 10-50.

    Here is my update, I can not imagine leaving the stock tires on the RZ3, I rode mine for a total of 12 miles and could not stand it any longer. I went with Continental trail king 2.4 up front and a x king 2.4 rear. On the stock rims these tires are a true 2.4 inches wide but the decrease in rolling resistance and weight is unbelievable. I switched to Deore XT brakes for the adjustability and ability to run I spec clamps. I wasnít crazy with the engagement of the rear hub so I swapped them for Sun Ringle HRCs. I spoke to Sun and they say that by January they will have a microspline freehub available so Iíll swap the less than stellar shifting Sunrace for a Shimano cassette at that point. Final change so far was an XTR shifter, I like the ability to grab multiple gears in each direction which the XTR allows. I will probably swap the SLX derailleur for an XT when I destroy it on a rock or stick. These changes have really made this bike exceptional, I am very glad I bought it.

    Sunrace is having issues with the cassette. There was a bad batch and yours might be included in it. Check with your LBS.

    Iím thinking the OEM hub and cassette choice is a definite flaw on an otherwise stellar bike. I replaced my hub due to low engagement and less importantly sound. The cassette was a boat anchor and didnít shift clean at all. These two changes made a huge difference in how the bike feels overall. Everyone has said these bikes punch outside of their weight class already and these two changes just reinforce that.

    Iím super happy with my X king. Iím only running one on the back but I have run them as a set on other bikes and was happy with them. That being said the trail king/x king combo is outstanding.
    The bike will feel completely different with different tires, do it.

    It sounds like rough bearings, though I've also heard screeching sounds and creaking sounds so I'm not really sure what all is going wrong.

    i had 2019 RZ 2, but that got stolen, so i'm market for a new one. As here in finland is winter now, i did got myself a rigid fatbike with 4.8" meats, but the summer is coming, and i need also an ful susser to my fleet;

    Since i have fallen in love in big meats, can someone confirm, how wide 27.5 tyres the 2020 HW3 takes? That color is fire.

    Howís everyoneís shifting...mine was marginal with all oem components, Iíve since swapped to an XT derailleur and things have actually gotten worse. The sun race cassette is likely the culprit Iím guessing but Iím curious of everyone elseís experience. Mine will have an XT cassette as soon as sun ringle releases their microspline driver

    Sunrace cassettes have a warranty issue. You may have a bad one. I am going to switch to an SLX cassette once Hope releases their microspline hubs. I went SLX cassette over XT because they only difference is that the top ring is steel vs aluminum. The SLX is cheaper and stronger and not much heavier.

    My Marin dealer has turned in a few of them. There is also a warranty issue on the Z2 fork seals. My HH3 fork is at Fox right now.

    Thatís wonderful...I donít care too much about the cassette as I will go XT as soon as I can get a microspline freehub but the fork is a bummer

    The Z2 was rattling when I bounced the front end. I thought it might have been a brake cable bouncing off the fork. Turns out the seals were the issue.

    Just FYI to anyone looking to put a 2.6 on the rear, clearance is exremely tight on the HH3 with Conti Dbaron 2.6, to the point where the new tire knobs are rubbing. I'll have to switch to a 2.4 rear

I'm in Tucson, AZ and it's primarily either slow speed tech down in the valleys or high speed tech up in the adjacent mountains. Unfortunately no chance to ride a RZ before the Sedona Mtb Festival in March (no dealer down here) so would be going off of recommendations. Most folks either ride ~140mm all mountain bikes or enduro sleds to be able to ride both types of terrain.

    Matt Jones took a stock Carbon RZ 1which is pretty much a RZ 3 with a carbon frame. He shredded with it no problems. If you are looking at bigger jumps and such, then the Alpine Trail 7 and 8 are on sale right now.

    I understand that one can make a mini enduro sled out of the RZ, that's not a question (I'm also not Matt Jones). I also don't really want a big 150mm travel enduro machine. My question is really more about folks' experience with riding the RZ on seriously rocky terrain, regardless of speed. Several of the first ride reviews on the RZ Carbon highlight how well poised it is on smoother trails but can feel undergunned once getting into rougher terrain, not even enduro level, which we have a ton of down in S Arizona. Wanted to see if anyone here had feedback from similar riding conditions.

    I have a 2019 Rift Zone 3 with a 140mm fork that I took to the whole enchilada this past year and have ridden all over Vegas and southern Utah. It's been great. If I was riding trails like the whole enchilada regularly I'd want a bigger bike. I still had an awesome time on TWE. I think if you expect it to be a 150mm enduro bike it'll let you down. But if you take it for what it is and ride it like that you'll be impressed. For rocky technical trails it performs really well.

    So I have a few rides on my Rift Zone 3. Swapped tires out for Bontrager SE4 up front and XR3 out back. Also swapped bar for Nukeproof Horizon Carbon 38mm rise 800 wide. I was concerned about putting 800 bars on such a "trail" bike. I was shocked at how much I prefer the width. I think with the short stem the wider bars work for more control. The bikes geometry is the highlight. This thing screams for downhill in all its guises. And it flies. Very happy so for. Climbing is okay. Don't know if it's the suspension kinematics or just the heavier cassette and wheel combo. But It's not the same as a Fuel or like bikes. But downhill it's nothing but fun. I do plan on swapping the wheels for
    Hunt Trail Wides paired with XT cassette for snappier drivetrain. But the bike is awesome overall. I'm 6'1 on size L. Ride in SoCal so the tires will likely swap out to Minion/Aggressor once winter hero dirt gets loose.

    I've made a few similar changes to my 2020 RZ 3. I Put 2.4 DHR II on rear and 2.5 DHR on front but I'm looking to move to Hunt wheelset too just trying to figure out whether or not the Enduro Wide at 33mm internal would be better than the Trail Wide. Also going to switch to XT Cassette when I do. The other change I made was PNW 780mm bar up front which I'm digging. Switched to One Up v2.1 dropper w/ PNW Loam also. Wheelset is next and then I'm curious has anyone stretched the 2020 RZ to 140mm up front fork? I have been looking at this also. I'm 5.8 1/2 and ride a Medium. Tires made such a difference for sure! My son has the 2019 and he's running 2.4 WTB Trail Boss in rear and 2.5 WTB Vigilante up front and loves it. That bike is sick fast and different feeling than the new 2020 to me.

    I would go with the Trail wheels as they'll be lighter and should be plenty wide enough.

    So I took it to my local Marin dealer and it was a bad bearing. The warranty covered the part, but since I bought the bike online the labor wasn't (it was $30). I normally work on my bike to save money and so I figured since it was under warranty I'd take it in, but since I had to pay labor it ended up costing me more than the part would've. Next time I'll try just going through GovVelo (where I bought it). I had read Marin's warranty and interpreted that I had to take it into a bike shop to get it warrantied, but I read someone else went through GovVelo when they're hub died and got a whole new wheel.

    Not yet, but a couple of reviews I've read said they did, so I might go one side up on the rear shock. The fork feels fine, so I'll probably leave that stock.

    Yeah, the fork doesn't feel like it needs it as much for me, but I would like to see what it's like with a spacer or two. Maybe it will be more poppy.

    Anyway, where did you read those reviews? I can't seem to find much on the 2020 models in terms of reviews.

    I am looking at putting a Bomber CR with Fox SLS on the Hawk Hill. The Bomber Z2 fork seem to be a better fit for the HH and RZ due to it being stiffer. My LBS owner prefers the spec on the carbon RZC1 than the RZC2.

    What is your current fork/shock?

    I'm guessing the Recon? Any 34/35mm fork would be stiffer. I am totally happy with the BomberZ2. Coil seems to be all the rage lately. Once you get the right spring, it should be go to go.

    I have a Hawk Hill 3 so it is a Bomber Z2 with DPS shock. I put a Bomber Z2 on my San Quentin as well. The Fox is more plush for sure, but the Bomber is stiffer and seems to work better. The coil seems interesting to try for small bump compliance. With the SLS spring, it would not be that much heavier. I will also put on a new wheelset so I can make up weight there.

    I am looking for some insight on the 2020 Hawk Hill and Riftzone. I am looking to get one of the two but am a little torn between them. Is the Hawk Hill a lot less stable at speed than the Riftzone? I've read some reviews stating that the Riftzone has a very planted stable feel to it. For those with the Riftzone does that planted feel take away any playfullness it may have?? I am about 5'10" and a 31 inseam... so right between sizes. Any recommendations on what size I should go with? I live in Denver and climb for all my descents. Ride many rocky and rooty trails as well as some different flow trails if that helps for any recommendations.

    I am also about 5'10". I have a Medium Rift Zone 3. The reach specs are very similar to my old Large 2015 Mount Vision. I sat on a Large Hawk Hill before ordering the Rift Zone. It has a slightly shorter reach than the Large Rift Zone. I felt ok on the Large Hawk Hill, but I didn't think any longer of a reach would have worked for me. I am happy with the Medium on the Rift Zone, but I would go up to a Large if I bought the Hawk Hill. If you like a big bike, I think you would be ok with a large Rift Zone.

    The Rift Zone is definitely planted. I never feel sketchy or out of control on descents. For sure, it is not as playful as my old 27.5 Mount Vision. It is also not the most snappy climber or accelerator. I also climb for every descent. The Rift Zone makes technical climbs easy. The big tires roll over everything, and I hardly even have to be selective with lines on climbs. Things my Mount Vision needed thoughtful line choice, the Rift Zone plows over without a care.

    To sum it up. If you are looking for stability, get the Rift Zone. If you are looking for poppy and playful, get the Hawk Hill.

    I'm 5'10" as well and on a large 2019 rift zone 3, which fits perfectly. I emailed marin about the 2020 rift zone because the reach jumps up 20mm and they said if you are comfortable on a large 2019 then go with a large 2020. The steeper seat tube angle should compensate for the longer reach.

    Has anyone played around with volume spacers on their DPS? The tune according to the Fox website is:
    2020, FLOAT DPS, P-S, A, 3pos, Evol LV, Marin, Rift Zone, 210, 50, 0.4 Spacer, LCM, LRL01, CML, Standard Logo

    Yes go for the larger spacer. I'm 225lbs on a size large with the .95 spacer and it rides great. Just be sure to measure your rear sag especially as air charts provided by Marin and Fox didn't get me to correct sag. I ended up needing about 260 psi to achieve 30% not the 240 they recommended.

    I ended up getting a Shimano SLX Microspline hub so I could go full SLX on the drivetrain, but I didn't realize the hub has a wider flange so I assume I need new spokes as well. Am I correct in assuming I just take the difference in spoke hole position on the new hub versus the old hub and that's the difference I'll need in spoke size?

    I would very very strongly suggest taking all the necessary measurements and plugging them into a spoke length calculator.

    You're right, and I did end up figuring that out, fortunately. And the good thing is that the stock spokes were within spec to reuse. So I finally got it all together today and now I've got full SLX.

    I also want to mention that when I first got this bike I wasn't as blown away by it as I had hoped. Well, with it being apart while I was working on it I rode my old bike again (2009 Jamis XCT 2.0) and it was eye-opening to how much better my new bike is. The steering felt so bad on my old bike, it was so much more skittery on bumpy/rugged terrain, and just handled so much worse. Made me have a newfound appreciation for the Hawk Hill. I don't think it's perfect, but it's definitely a sweet bike, especially when you get going fast.

    Iím having the same problem with the Z2. I though my headset was loose or brake cables where rattling but it is definitely the fork. The uppers and lowers have some play between them.

    I just bled the rear brake on my RZ3 and was surprised that the oil was clear instead of shimano red. Anyone else do a bleed and notice the color?

    I really like the feel of my SLX levers on my Pine Mountain and when I had my Mount Vision. I wanted to get a set of the M7120 SLX four pistion brakes, but they were almost $400 for the set.

    I read this article and found that the Deore M6000 and MT501 levers were the same, and that the guy in the article had swapped out the levers to different Shimano brakes. https://www.bikemag.com/gear/tested-...145-per-brake/

    It got me to thinking that maybe I could just get levers, so I started looking. On WWC, I found SLX levers for $42/ea and MT501 for $40/ea. I found M6000 levers $27/ea at Universal Cycles. https://www.universalcycles.com/shop...s.php?id=94565

    Deore/SLX/XT levers are pretty much identical with SLX adding tool-free reach and XT adding Free Stroke. I've never felt the need to adjust free stroke and once the reach is adjusted they are pretty much set. I figured the 501/6000 levers would be ideal.

    So, for about $60 vs $400 I can have SLX feeling levers with Four Piston power, well that's the plan anyways. We'll see how they do once I get them installed and test them out.

    Side note, it's interesting that the DEORE lever is less expensive than the no series 501 levers even though they are identical minus the labeling on the reservoir.
