Tips and advice for riding in the dark?

I'm fairly new to MTB riding and this will be my first winter riding and the days are getting shorter. I get up early every morning before work and go ride for an hour or so, lately it's been dark thirty! Found out my cheap headlamp is woefully inadequate, and the trail I thought I knew by heart seems to grow rocks and branches when it's dark . Also all my gear/bike is black so I'll have to do something about that (about half my usual ride is on the street).

Just looking for advise and pointers from experienced night riding folks. Thanks!

For the street portion, get a good tail light.

Either have 2 lights (helmet and bar) or carry a good LED flashlight and some way to attach it to the helmet as a backup for when your main light dies unexpectedly.

Just need to pony up for some better lighting. Lots of inexpensive choices discussed here ad nauseam. Two lights, one on helmet, one on bar gives the best result. Blinky on the rear for the road portions. Have fun.

Thanks all. Yesterday did some shopping and picked up a Niterider lumina 750 (seen here and most reviews online looked good), tail light Serfas UTL-2BK, a Tikka Petzl that fits nicely on my forehead under my helmet to look around. Used them this morning for the first time and WOW what a difference!

Lots of shiny animal eyeballs staring at me, front tire throwing debris everywhere, bugs galore, and I can actually see where I'm going.

Also picked up some brighter clothing, shorts, gloves, arm warmers it will be getting cold soon. All florescent green. Looking forward to much more fun!

Good Idea going to leave my old light on the bars just in case.
