information overload! just need a good commuter light.

theres a lot to go over here! im not even sure what im looking for anymore..

im definitely a tinkerer, id like to make my own light. i work nights and the only thing holding me back from bicycle commuting is a good, strong headlamp.. id be on a roadbike on paved roads, but at 4am i dont want to be laying in a ditch because i didnt see that crap in the road. we're lucky enough to have bike lanes here, so id need to adequately light up the ~5 foot wide lane, and have a pretty good view of whats in front of me for some distance.

what kind of light should i be looking for, for that kind of commuting? looking for info on a good LED, and what size/angle reflectors i should be looking into. id like to run 2 lights, bar mounted.. and if at all possible, id like to use my 14.4v battery packs from my cordless drill.

i can figure out a housing arrangement, just need some tips on angles and sizes! thanks in advance.
