Would like to get started with the DIY thing - Request for help

Reading these threads is difficult for me. I'd like to do a DIY headlight but want to start simple.

It doesn't have to be super bright because my 17 dollar "Cree XML 1200" from amazon last year was bright enough.

My night riding is usually cold, so thermal challenges might be diminished, plus I like to ride with the light at the low setting to conserve battery.

My preference would be for a design that retrofits my current light housing, maybe with a new LED and driver. It might be easiest for me if the LED driver could be in the battery pack, and have new cold compatible wiring go straight up to the LED.

For now I'm just replacing the battery pack and running the lights as-is.

Another question, is an on/off switch a bad idea, or do they always fail in the cold?

I've just finished converting an old (round) Magicshine housing into a quad XPL-Hi. A bit of metal removal on the inside to fit the driver and it's really quite good.
