    Thermal transfer material or not?

    Why put a thermal transfer material with 5 W/mk between two aluminium parts that are hold together with screws?
    Is it not better to skip the thermal transfer material?
    Aluminium have 205 W/mk so the thermal transfer material with 5 W/mk will cause a "bottleneck" in the thermal transfer.

    Or am I missing something here?

    The aluminium parts are flat and the surface is smooth.

    Unless very finely lapped and polished, two surfaces will have only a small area where they actually contact each other. A machined "flat" surface is a series of tiny ridges and valleys. Screw two of those surfaces together and they only touch on the ridges. Thermal paste fills the tiny gaps in the valleys between the parts to improve the conduction of heat.

    And as a diy assembly I can say sticking down a led with a tape is fast clean and accurate vs precisely locating and drilling and tapping a small hole.
