    Phlatlights anyone?

Anyone have some plans for the new kids on the block?

The SST50 is shipping now and puts out 1250lm!

    https://www.luminus.com/content1518
    https://www.luminus.com/stuff/conten...550_052709.pdf

Much like a MC-E/ P7 with one big die rather than four small ones.
No stupid crosses ruining the beam!
    And can handle 5A.
Flashlight builds starting to appear over at CPF

Start posting stupid build ideas now!

And then theres the Troutie special, SST90 which is double the output...

Zom, I can only get the SST 90 data sheet to work but I'm amazed at such a low vf for such lumens, do you know the vf of the SST 50?

    3.2V at 1.75A and 3.6 at 5A

To compare with current leds 1.75A is 350mA/mm^2, and 5A is 1A/mm^2 (so behaves like 5 XREs in parallel).

Wow there will be a lot of heat on full, my quad XRE gets red hot on full (1A).

I expect under driven it will be similar to MC-E in performance but with a better beam and the ability to significantly overdrive, assuming you can find a nice 5A driver.

Those look really cool, now all we need is a supplier and some info on optics.

    LEDs are shipping already:

    Be quick, only 10 left

Ledil have preliminary specs on boom reflector for the 90:
    http://www.ledil.fi/datasheets/DataS..._reflector.pdf

Might be a good aspheric led.

When those 10 have gone there will be a 9 week wait, the XP-G might be out and about by then.

Perhaps but it's going to be interesting to see what optics/reflectors become available for this LED. Without multiple dies, I would think a more narrower beam would be possible with the right optic. From the graph it looked as though @ 4A it should be outputting close to 1200lm. Probably more like 1000+ real lumens but not bad from one single emitting light source. A single emitting light source over 1000lm with laser like beam pattern ( with the right optic ) on the helmet would be sweet. Still, like someone else said, it's gonna get hot being run over 3A.

Znomit I asked George and he has nothing all the CPF guys seem to be direct driving them . but a flashlight is a different amimal to a bike light .

CDCDCD ok it is not the light you suggested but hows about a 5 amp driver and a 10 amp driver for the SST90
that works from my existing 14.8 v batteries

    Yeah whats with that?
Has the dome come off and been pressed back on?

Troutie do you take requests? Could you do a cool 20mA photo showing the die just lit up please.

No it is shadowing from the camera being so close there are tiny peaks and troughs in the phospher and with the camera directly above the side lighting highlghted them .

I will get it stuck to a heatsink and have a go tonight and also throw some optics on it
I guess I can drive it at 5 amps from my bench supply but no in the woods beamshots sadly.

    Here you go Znomit
I had to fiddle with the camera menus I have never used before to get it dark enough to see anything

it just lit up with the bench power supply at 2.4 volts and no amps reading on the dial
and at 2.5 volts it was way too bright for my camera

The first pic is on auto

and full resolution pics are here

I have had a play around with the Phlat and while it is crazy bright for a single led it has the same hard to get a decent beam as the P7 and MCE OK I have only tried what I have in the parts bin

it is also going to create a heap of heat if driven at full chat that is if you find a good driver to use .

it will make a good flashlight but for cycling I think a beam made up from a few leds and optics is a better way as the mix and match works better than a one optic/ reflector trying to do the job on its own .

I will probably make this one into a Flashlight of some sort maybe with an aspheric lens just for the fun of it . but wont be doing a bike light from it .

Looks like to get any decent run time you would have to carry a battery weighing as much as a brick. However if we ever start seeing batteries with newer technology ( think at least 3 X the capacity we currently have..) then maybe a build with some of these ( leds ) might be more practical.
