    newbie questions!

    Hi all.

    Sorry for the stupid questions. Why is a heatsink require? What is its purpose?

    To take heat away from the LED's mounted to it.

    If high power LED's where used at the high currents that we require for good light output without being mounted to a heatsink they would overheat and die.

    Thanks for the simple and clear answer.

    So it will be preferbly with any material thats good conductor of heat.

    And casing with fins will help too. right?

    Copper is great as a heat conductor but is very heavy, expensive & hard to machine so Aluminium is what gets used the most.

    The goal is lots of suface area in direct contact with the outside air.

    Forgot to add that the least amount of joints (thermal junctions) the better, a one piece design is best so that there is a direct heat path from LED's through the heatsink to air.
