    front glass ?

do Carclo optics require a "cover" glass? as in a piece of glass on the very front of the light to protect the plastic optic.
and that leads to the question of how far should it be from the optic.
this would be on a 3 up XP-G with a clear wide optic.
i'am thinking after awhile that plastic is going to get scratches in it.
lay some experience on me guys

Personally I have uses all the carlo optics with no front glass and haven't had a problem yet. I just wipe and dirt off with a damp cloth and if it is hardened dirt I let it soak for a few minutes before wiping.

If you want to use a front glass then mineral watch glass can be very good and pretty cheap if purchased from fleabay. There are heaps of different sizes available and they come with a gasket to keep them in place and reasonably sealed. Most are 1mm thick but you can get up to 2mm.

Some styles of spot optic have a hole in the center that is hard to clean on the trail and really kills the light output when mud gets in it. I use a cover with those. If they are flat, go without. Small scratches polish out easily and optics are cheap if replacement is needed.

This was one of my headlights... 3mm plexiglass plus silicone gasket plus carclo.
