    Driving XPE Triple and MCE

    Hi gang,

    I've just started work on my next project and could do with some guidance....

    What would be the best driver to use to drive 2 XPE triples and an MCE, using a single switch to alter the light output?

    My new design is going to have adjustable angle 'pots' for the 2 triples to sit in for throw and a centre MCE for spread. I'm thinking I'll need a hipflex but would like some help as I'm currently designing the main body as I've already done the design for the pots...

    Do you know what battery you want to use?

    If you want to run each of the dies at their full 700ma with a hipFlex then as it's a buck driver you will require a huge battery.

    A lot depends on how you will wire the LED's and what battery you intend to use.

    I'm thinking of using one of smudge's 15v 5.4mAh batteries..

    As for how I'm going to wire them, any suggestions would be gratefully received

    I'm still not too clever on the maths side of things...machining 'yes', maths/electronics 'not really'

    Would I be better to go for 3 triples? Using the centre with a wide optic and the outer 2 with more spotty type optics?

    Three triples would make the maths a lot easier, It would run cooler and at least you don't have to worry about the flower petal beam from the MCE.

    That would be nine LED dies so you could run it the same as the "Son of Pipe light." That's if you wan't to keep the battery small.

    You could run 5s2p from a maxFlex and get away with a smaller battery. That would give up to 600ma/die.

    .... and another vote for 3 triples, 3s3p/hipflex and one of smudge's 15v 5.4mAh batteries
    i just got some from cutter, jeez they are gorgeous
    heres an XP-E triple on a MR11 XR-E quad

    so now that there are these http://www.cutter.com.au/proddetail....=cut882&cat=52 does that mean we can get quad XP-E's on a star, if so what would you drive that with?

    Hendo, is that the mini-mag light head? The one that takes AA's?

    OMG....those things look tiny!!!

    So, to re-cap......to run 3 triple XPE's, I'd need a hipFlex??

    I'll be able to finish my design soon...

    Thanks for the help guys, more questions to follow for sure though

    Hendo,

    Could you do me favour? Could you measure the thickness of the optic and board combination? I think it's about 8mm...

    yep, cute as hell eh! it would need machining to get the triple board and heatsink in though

    No progress yet...can't get ant time on the machines yet

    It's all programmed and got some material though so hopefully not too long before I have something to play with..

    Would a maxFlex run 3 triples? I know I've aske dthis before but I just want to make sure before I do any machining. If it will, brilliant!

    yes a maxflex could run them 3s3p 400ma per triple

    Any idea on what kind of runtime and output I'd get? Will be using either a 15v 5.4aH or 15v 3.6aH battery. Also, my wiring skills are not good and my knowledge of how to wire in series/parallel is even worse....would anyone have a VERY simple wiring diagram they could post up??

    vf 9.6x400=3.84

    3.84/15=0.26

    3x0.26=0.77

    5.4/0.77=7.01 hrs or there abouts

    wiring in series take a wire from the positive of the battery to the positive on the first star then from the negative of the first star to the positive of the second star and so on. Wiring in parallel, take a wire from the positive on the battery to the positive on the first star and then to all the positives on the following stars, on the last star take a wire from the negative to the negative on all the stars and then back to the negative of the battery.
