    Death Ray 2...coming to a trail near you

    ...well, only if you are on the Front Range

    Still got lots of work to do on her. Here she is dirty and unpolished:

    3x XPE? You should post a side by side with DR1 for size comparison.

    Nice! What optics/reflectors are going in there?

    BTW, I'm moving from Florida to Boulder in early June, my wife got a job at CU. We need to have a mega-light shootout once I'm there...and you can make fun of me as I wheeze my way around at altitude...

    All polished and holes for wires drilled. It was feeling a little porky, so to save some weight I shaved insides of the 3 barrels a little and milled out the bar mount. All that is left is the anodizing (or Gun Kote) and slapping her together I think both the cost would be about the same for anodizing vs the gun kote stuff... leaning toward the gun kote because it sounds easier and I don't have to keep sulfuric acid around.

    wow, this light is taking forever to complete. Finally got around to anodizing the parts. It came out OK considering this was my first time. I was going for all black, but the bar mount and back plate came out olive...I think juiced it too long and it came out HAIII (so it didn't take the black dye). Actually, I like it w/ the 2 colors now

    Should be able to finish her up this weekend

    Wow! Very nice!

    I'm ashamed to admit it, but I think I'm physically attracted to that light...

    cytoe, that's fantastic!

    How hard or how easy was it to do the anodizing?

    The running around getting all the stuff needed to anodize was a pain. Also, the prep... I wasn't sure how long to leave the parts in the lye; I think less would have been easier. The anodizing part itself was easy...but took forever since I only had a 12v 6amp battery charger.

    oh and about the BFG...the 2nd one of course

    Wow, amazing light! The beamshots should be impressive, with three P7's there should be a great deal of flood with some punch with all those lumens.

    really need to learn to take better beam shots like troutie...

    here's a reference shot
    <img src="https://lh3.ggpht.com/_vtmZU7exU8c/SccNb0IIFuI/AAAAAAAABMg/90JKMChatcI/s800/007.JPG" />

    death ray 1:
    <img src="https://lh4.ggpht.com/_vtmZU7exU8c/SccNanB-oYI/AAAAAAAABMQ/Z8leS1US6h0/s800/009.JPG" />

    BFG (aka death ray 2):
    <img src="https://lh6.ggpht.com/_vtmZU7exU8c/SccNbQJ1FVI/AAAAAAAABMY/QPBLMKJtMwE/s800/008.JPG" />

    death ray 1 (12 x Q5's w/ dealextreme aspheric quad lens) throws farther, but the BFG has much better spread. Should be interesting on the next ride.

    Did you take those with the camera set for auto? I'm sorry to say, but they do not look as impressive as they should, I think perhaps the camera was adjusting each image to get a good exposure or the metering is taking too narrow a sample in the center, but that means they would not be apples to apples to apples. If your camera has a manual exposure setting, you could take a pic and set it up so it looks as close to reality as possible, then use the same manual settings for the rest of the pics.

    Clearly you will need to use death ray 1 as a helmet light then Hope you have a strong neck!

    like I said... I suck at beam shots. I had my point and shoot in night mode...I'll try manual next. Both lights are actually stupid bright.

    The "MTBR.com standard settings" for beamshots are:

    Camera Settings: Setting-full manual, ISO-100, Exposure-6 seconds, Aperture-F4.0, Focus-Manual, White Balance-Daylight.

    I haven't tried any beamshots yet, so I can't vouch for how easy it is to make this work. My camera seems to have all those adjustments, except the manual focus option.
