    Camcorder Li-ion Battery Protection Question

    Hello,

I was thinking of using a Canon BP-945, 6600 mah camcorder li-ion battery for my light project. Does anyone know if this battery has a built in protection circuit? Is there any worry of over discharging it? I was thinking of using it to run a boost driver and a single mc-e for a headlamp, to replace my old k2 emitter head lamp.

    Thanks.

I have used camcorder Li-ion batteries for many years on many projects and if you are happy with 7.4v then they are great, but you must use a li-ion charger.

Every one that I have used has had built in protection in fact I have yet to find one that does not so I will asume the one you are thinking of does.

The problem is that the protection for over current (polySwitch) is set for low ampage use (camcorder) so although they work well with buck drivers a boost driver may draw enough from the battery to trip the polySwitch.

Thanks very much for the insight. I was considering the camcorder lithium pack as an inexpensive li-ion battery. Are there some other 14 v li-ion options out there that people are using for reasonably priced power sources?

If you want to really cut costs then you can get 18650 cells and a charger from DealExtreme.com and an 18650 cell holder from Turboferret and a few others on this forum.

Sorry for short reply my ISP is playing up....Again.
