That's not a huge amount of cash. You should be able to get a set of hand-built Rhynolite XL's or Singletracks on Deore or LX hubs for that, though. They would be reasonably light and strong; I've heard some people complain that they flat spot easily, but I've never had a problem with them myself. D521's would be awesome - strong and light - but possible out of your price range unless you can find a used set.

Maybe check out the Wheels forum, or the Downhill-Freeride forum....

    How about $350

If you go up another $50 to $350 you have some more breathing room. I got my wheelset for about that price from Mike Garcia at oddsandendos.com. He does a great job building the wheels and that can be as important as the choice of parts. I got WTB Laserdisc Lite hubs (a carbon copy of American Classic Ultralight hubs) with Mavic xc717 rims. This is an extremely light wheelset - about 1550 grams for the pair!!! After 500 miles (all offroad), both rims are as true as the day I got them! And I weigh 210.
