    Little Casino Trail Stanley Rumors

There were some rumors going around the SWIMBA meeting on Saturday night about the Little Casino trail in Stanley being rerouted and opened up to ATVs. I spoke with Ed Cannady from the SNRA about this and he informed me that the trail is being rerouted, but will not be open to ATVs. They are simply getting the trail out of the creek to minimize creek crossing and will seek to keep the trail challenging.

I guess good news. After trying to ride Little Casino a few months ago and seeing some of the flags it makes sense now what those were there for. Lots of creek crossings and lots of places where the trail is completely eroded by the creek and hard to find. Lots of trees down though, so I don't know how much rerouting the trail is going to help that other than people getting in there and cutting out the deadfall next spring.
Just ride down there and jump off something for crying out loud...

On the Dialog program the other night John McCarthy was touting Little Casino as a bone they were going to throw to mountain bikers to make up for closing the rest of the White Clouds. He talked about a big reroute project.

Do you know how its getting funded?

The tool from TWS tosses MTBers and the wildlifers a bone with a sanitized Little Casino Creek. That's as funny as a toad in a glass of milk.

I, for one, will miss the staccato creek crossings. In my mind, ragged gave LC Creek its charm.

I know, sustainable trails, yuddy yuddy yuddy blah blah blah.

How can you enjoy wilderness at speed? Wilderness should be enjoyed slowly, right? The tool sez so.

"They" wanna make the trail so fast to ride that they can then complain about user conflicts and how MTB's destroy the 'vironmint and don't enjoy the near wilderness slowly enough, then they'll shut it down too.

I salute the closure of trails to mountain bikes.

I salute slowly. This salute existed in the 1800s. Very mountain man if you ask me. And very natural. A non-mechanized salute. No mechanized animals were harmed in the making of my salute.

This salute should be preserved as a Wild Salute.

    And here is my salute.

I would rather they reroute the upper ridgeline part of the trail that goes straight up the fall line.

Earlier this summer I stumbled upon a trail crew dynamiting portions of the trail to "get the big rocks out of the way and make it more rideable." I told the trail worker that I drove 2,000 miles to get to this trail specifically because of all of the rocks on the trail, which makes for a fun, technical descent. She didn't comprehend my comments.

five or ten short riding seasons back, the local Stanley who-hah was that Little Casino would be rerouted out of the bottom and up onto the ridge to the west, so that the motos would be able to better utilize the trail. probably why they were dyn-o-miting said rocks. I say, why not build a dam there? hasn't been a new dam built anywhere for way too long a time. then they could jet ski there too.

    Jet ski?

    pfffff.

You could build a hydro plant and sell electricity. That and a little green energy stimulus money from the feds and you'd be able to buy yourself a sweet new wheelset!
