    Helena Conditions 2017...?

With the warm spell how are the South Hills looking?

    Anyone been out?

I was just in Helena yesterday for work. I was surprised by the amount of snow in town. You might have better luck skiing Mt Helena.

Yes, snowy. We have had a lot here this winter. Up until this warm patch the fatbiking has been great. Now it is variable mash potatoes and unridable, and too muddy where the snow and ice has melted off. A good hard freeze should firm it back up.

Helena weather update 2/24/17. Back below freezing and my ride last night on Eddye McClure was on frozen dirt and ice. Much better riding conditions for my studded fat bike, but eventually the trail got too steep to be safely ridable. I have not ventured out into the rest of the South Hills in a few weeks so I can't comment on their status, but my experience is that my goto trail of Eddye McClure is a decent surrogate for the rest. Weather forecast has us below freezing for many days with chance of snow, so that should improve riding conditions. If you're into that kind of riding, I'm pretty sure OP was looking for dirt rather than snow.

Nope. It'll be another week before there are some reliably dry options. I'm sure you could piece together some short pedals on open knobs like Little Moab, Strawberry Hill, or Prospect Shafts, but there's still a lot of wet and soft miles out there. I'm headed to L&C Caverns tomorrow, and I think that's the best option for now.

Scratchgravel was good today. Some snow patches in the higher reaches.

Helena is about 85% dry. There are some holdouts like Show Me The Horse and Prairie, but those will be dry in another week. Two weeks ago the fatbiking was still good, but we're drying up fast.
