Bike sale gone bad in Boise

I responded to a craigslist ad this week.

Date: 2007-07-16, 9:11AM MDT Big Hit DH,
Hayes 8" Hydralic Disc Brakes, Juior T Fork, Sram Compenents, $450.00

Afraid to tell everyone that I was arranging a deal on a Specialized Big Hit bike from Richard Lawton of Eagle, when he sold it out from under me....

E-mail string:

Subject: Specialized Big Hit DH - $450
Sent: Tue 7/17/2007 7:02 AM

Joe, I dont do Pay Pal, sorry. It is like a rust color. I think that it is an 02, the bike is used but there are no big dents or scratches. Take a look at the pics. The bike really needs a bottom bracket and a tune up and it should be ready to go.
Richard

Where are you coming from to get it? No, sorry there is no other way to pay me over the internet. I can wait until next tuesday and we can meet at your father in laws house and can do payment and stuf there. Let me know what you think.

Richard, Ok, let's arrange to meet at my father-in-laws house next Monday or Tuesday, so consider it SOLD!

Thanks,
Joe

I tried to pay him using paypal, but he said that he could wait.
I find it hard to believe that a fellow mtb'er would act this way!
Hope the bike wasn't stolen? Was the deal too good to be true?

Here's the pixs he sent me....

Sounds like common craig's list crap. That stuff always happens to me. You're may be better off in the long run if the bike was stolen...bad karma sucks

Kash is King!

I'm surprised you're questioning whether the merchandise is hot after the deal fell through. Com'mon, you were thinking that from the git-go! Four hun'ed smackers! Admit it... you were going to buy it, weren't you!

not tryin' to be a dick, but it looks to me like it's possible that he had already sold it before you said 'consider it SOLD'. people selling stuff get jerked around alot so it's hard to blame him for selling it to the first guy to come up with the cash.

must be annoying for you tho. but take heart, dh bikes are lame. (haha, just kidding).

I have sold tons of stuff on craigslist and I always include the clause; "the first person to put the cash in my hands get it!" It creates urgency and keeps people from getting butt-hurt.

He sold me the Bike

Dude! That is so harsh to post his name and blasting him like he did something wrong! Heres the story. Richard offered to sell me the bike last year and I didn't have the money. I look at craigslist all the time to see what ppl are selling and when I saw he was selling it at that price I called him and told him I still wanted it. I work with him so I guess since he thought he would see me daily you went on the backburner. Besides ppl from So.Cal are going to drive to Idaho to buy a bike that sounds shady. So as you can see the story is simple and the bike is not Hot. Just a good deal that a friend gave me.
