    Replacing headset on an X1

The headset on my bike has developed a lot of play in it, even after tightening the stem and cap. I'm going to replace the headset on my '04 X1 and was wondering if any of the Cane Creek intergraded headsets will work or is there a specific one that I need. Also is this something that I can easily do on my own, i.e... do I need any special tools? Thanks for any help.

You'd need a headset Press, and possibly get it faced and chased.
Basically, you can use any headset, as long as it's not Campanalgo

    headset press?

Do I need a headset press? My headset is an intergraded type, there are no cups, they are built into the head tube.

On the X-1 you do have two cups that press into the frame.

This would be a compatiable headset.

Also you might check your fork bushings to see if those have play. A lot of people mistake worn bushings for a bad headset. Hold your front brake and place your thumb and index finger on the seal of the fork and rock the bike back and forth just like you are checking for a loose headset.
If you have loose bushings it is not the end of your fork you can have new bushings put in at any dealer for a reasonable price. The suspension fork is often the most overlooked item for service, you should have your fork rebuilt after every year of good riding.
