Ugly SR Suntour Shock boots... Can I remove?

What's happening. I am rockin an early 2000's GT with the cheap SR Suntour Shocks. I was wondering if I could remove the accordion style dust covers?(cut them off)

I know I will have to clean the stanchions more, but will it kill my seals?

How do I know if seals are bad?

    Thanks

You can definitely remove the shock boots. As for seals, anytime the seals will have more exposure to the elements, they will be more prone to some level of wear.

Seals can go bad in many ways such as not holding air pressure, leaking oil and visually looking dry and cracked. That said, if the fork has never seen service at all, it is safe to assume that they should get replaced or consider replacing the fork with a new one and start 100% clean slate with regular annual servicing.
