    2001ish I-Drive

Here is my i-drive, bought it brand new.... Anyone know the model name for this, XCr? It doesn't have the logo on the frame.

It originally had a RockShox Judy fork and Syncros wheels with v brakes. I couldn't remember the specs I thought it was 3.5" travel.

    It's a 2001 GT i-drive 4.0.

Look it up here : BikePedia - 2001 GT iDrive 4.0 Complete Bicycle

    Nice bike

XCR where the name for the 1999 and 2000 year models. Then they used "i-drive" for many years. That paint scheme in blue/white is really nice. Almost same as my 2000 XCR 3000. No offense, but I preferred the blue/white of the '00, but with your current fork, it's a really nice match that compense the lack of white in the back

Thanks for the info, I'm surprised that it has 4.6" of travel in the rear.

Well that's relative. With the eccentric of the i-drive, you get quite a big leverage ratio. Still a XC race worthy bike geometry.

I was interested in how much the axle travels. I don't' think the shock has over 4" of travel. I guess I can take some basic measurements when I get home and figure it out. It shouldn't be too difficult seeing as it's essentially a single pivot bike, as far as the axle path is concerned.

Well your shock should have a 1.5" stroke (eye is 6.5" I believe). But then the i-drive makes for a few interesting observations when the suspension is working. First, the distance between your saddle and the BB will always be the same, no matter how far you go in the travel (which makes for a good seated pedaling), but then due to the eccentric, the crank will be rotating clock-wise compared to the rear triangle, but fixed compared to the front triangle, which eliminate pedal kick (or pedal feedback) when pedaling over harsh terrain (like a nice uphill section full of roots).

Most bike will have either the BB attached to 1. the front or 2. rear triangle, making #1 eligible to pedal kick and #2 not having a constant saddle-BB distance. With mounting the BB into an eccentric attached to the front triangle, you get best of both worlds.

It's pretty much acting like a single pivot bike, so it makes for a quite linear suspension rate. The only big downside to this I believe would be the weight of the whole i-drive assembly. But it's still an incredible platform for XC/trail single tracks, and really give a big advantage on the gnarly uphill, where you can good fast with stability and good rear wheel tracking.

But you could easily measure the rear wheel travel with a measuring tape. The axle path should be a good start, pretty close to the real exact travel. But Bikepedia isn't always right in their bike specs.

Your saddle doesn't look level. That can't be a very comfortable ride the way its set up!

It may look good but it's a bit "choppered"...laid back. I think that fork has a tad taller axle to crown than was originally intended for that frame.
Needed: 26.8mm XTR seatpost, blue GT/Grundig Jersey.

    GT Tequesta

Hi guys, new here and I wanted to get some info and maybe a price on how much I could get for my Mountain Bike if I decided to sell it. I have been out of the game for a while now...

Everything on this is original and everything still works great. I think it's the 1998 model, I paid about $800 bucks for it brand new. It's been in the garage for 12 years now and today I pumped up the tires and rode it for a while (man I am out of shape)!

Here are some pics any info and prices that you can post will be greatly appreciated. Does GT still make bikes? And does anyone remember what GT stands for? I also have a Dyno Freestyle bike that I might want to sell. I know this is not a selling site but I did not know where else to start at (google brought me here )

    Nice bike

Yes GT still makes bikes, however they were purchased by Dorel Industries in early 2000's.

GT is for Gary Turner, the founder of GT Bicycles.

That bike seems pretty clean and good shape, you could easily ask $400 for and then negotiate down to $200 (they'll think they are making a freakin' deal ).

Honestly this bike needs to go ride. Don't you know anybody who's possibly interested in that bike ? You could even turn it into a nice commuter if you ditch the Raptor tires.

Thanks man, yea it's in great shape... so $200 bucks huh? I might hang on to it for a while the way gas is going up, etc... It needs a tune up bad though some new grease, etc, etc... I am in Marietta, GA. How much does tune up's go for now? I know the RockShocks might need some oil or something. I was amazed that the tubes blew up with air it's been hanging up for 12 years now and been through dramatic temperature swings.

In my experience tubes will last forever in those conditions. Tires on the other hand, you should check for the sidewalls rotting...

Well you can do it all by yourself. A tune up as you describe could go for as much as $50, so what you could do is spend those $$ at your lbs on tools and parts you'll need to get this baby back on track do it by yourself. If you ever have a question, just ask over here, the forums are full of helpful fellow riders. Plus your lbs is your best friend for taking care of your bike. Your fork should be very easy to do, you can even find the complete manual online that explains step by step.

Nice man! Thanks for the info... The back gears are a little slow to change what might be causing that? Is there a tune up DIY link somewhere?

You should probably check your cables and housing. They might need to be replaced or cleaned up.

Visit the website of Park Tools for many tutorials and infos, and YouTube vids.

It isn't hard, just have to learn. I already build up 4 bikes myself and full overhaul on 3 others. Read around the forums and you'll get much more knowledge then.

    +1

I'd pick out a bike shop near you and go in and ask them to adjust the rear derailleur/replace the cables and housings and suggest some tires for the sort of riding you are going to be doing. Unless you have nice wire cutters and are fairly mechanically inclined then replacing the cables and housings and indexing the rear cassette can be a bit of a challenge.

From those photos the tire rubber looks to be in good shape (is it supple?), if you are going to be doing mountain biking part of the time and riding around the city at other times, personally I'd pick up some tire levers and some city tires and swap them out if you are doing these activities on separate days.

If you have multiple bike shops fairly conveniently located, online rating services might give you an idea which is friendliest. Unfortunately some have attitude.

Hey, yea my Wheels have the quick release built in already, that is a good idea to just switch the wheels and tires all at once quick like... I will try some grease on the gear cables they look like they are in pretty good shape.

Thanks for all the info guys!

No, no grease on cables please !

You can always use some Teflon based lube, liquid-wrench has given me good results, but you should not have to lube cables normally.

    Zinn book

I highly recommend picking up "Zinn and the Art of Mountain Bike Maintenance"
I picked up an earlier version in college and I went from knowing zero about bike maintenance to completely rebuilding my '94 GT backwoods in 1999. I just picked up a newer version a couple years ago (my old one grew legs and walked off somewhere along the the way ) and definitely referred to it a couple times while I was building up my new Specialized Rockhopper SL SS 29er (i know, not a GT, but i like the ebb.)

I'm not familiar with much go GTs lines except for seeing the triple triangle. My tunnel vision stems from ignorance.. But thankfully I am still able to learn something new everyday. I'm a bit backwards in cellphone technology... I still use a Treo 650 that only has less than a megapixel camera and lousy lens. I really need a new phone, new bike,... Err.. Let's just say I really need more money.

haha I used to have a Treo too, years back though, well the picture doesn't look so good on my computer screen (non-hd) as it does on my phone (super amoled).

Watch that short seat post. Might cause some fatigue into the seat tube. Nice black color btw.

    Specy Ground Control 2.3 rear
    Kona Jerk 50mm stem
    Shimano XT trail pedals (m785)
Shaved over 200 grams with the new tire and stem. But gained a little over 100 by changing to XT pedals from my cb candys(xt's blow them out of the water)

Some very nice GT's in here. My first real bike was a 91 Timberline and progressed through a Pantera and then Zaskar LE.

    Avalanche

Sometimes it pays to be short. I picked up my first (and second) GT frame this year. Clearing out the short stuff and the Avalanche was $25. I finally got it set up and had the chance to ride this am. Nice!

Wish I could post a pic but it's waiting on a derailleur hanger at the LBS. 2010 Force 3.0

Can anyone tell me why the hangers for the force cost so much? I was online looking for the best price and it's twice as much as most hangers!

It's actually a full dropout and hanger, not just a hanger.

It loves the dirt! I had to wash it after that 30 mile ride, half of the ride was in wet sand/mud so not good for the drivetrain. But Shes already dirty again

Not too sure, but it makes it easy if you ever want to upgrade to a 12mm axle in the rear, you can order Sanction drop outs.

    Hi from new guy

Here is some Zaskar pics. She still rides great. I did recently put flats on her for tooling around the neighborhood but she longs to be on the trails with spds. I also have an old yellow judy I put on her some. Bomber for now. Even with some heavy parts she tips the scale at 25lbs.

I had no idea that this Selle Royale seat had those old-lady rubber bumpers under the back when I ordered it, but the thing is more comfortable than the WTB that it came with (which doesn't fit my butt at all). It'll do for now.

WTB Silverado Comp, you can see it in the pic by the front wheel on the table.

I'm gonna try a WTB Comfort V Sport and see if it is a happy medium between the two seats.

Can you help me identify my GT?

New to the site...have owned my bike for 5-6 years. Its a GT...i think 96 GT...looks alot like STS-1000 DS? . Serial number on the bottom is: 029600319 18. Apparently I cannot post the pictures until I have 5 posts. I got from my brother who owed me some cash. It has served its purpose. Just like to climb and get a workout, not a hardcore mtbkr but have been riding since I was 12. Kind of into the old school thing but also like the technology in the newer bikes! Was thinking of getting rid of it and starting new....having said that if you can help me identify what I have (excuse my lack of knowledge) and if you are interested in buying let me know. On the other side of the coin if you had this bike would you dial it in with new parts and tech? Let me know what ya think...much appreciated.

Hope you enjoy.

Tons of nice bikes on here! My first GT was a vintage Tequesta, and my newest is a Craigslist find: 1999 GT Aggressor, minty, low miles, one scratch on the top tube. Got her home yesterday, rinsed off 10 years of storage dust and grime, pumped up the tires, adjusted the brakes and deraileur, and she rides like a dream. The original owner was a Marine who left for Afghanistan after riding the bike a couple of times, when he came back, the bike went into storage. Time to upgrade the el-cheapo factory stem, bars, and pedals!

Just got this karakoram off craigslist fairly cheap for $100 I use to own a 1997 karakoram and sold it about 12 years ago and have regret it ever since. I still enjoy the feel of nice steel frame bike every now and again.

well it doesn't look much but i have a ten year old aggressor with shimano xt and xtr build up 1x9 with a 100mm manitou fork and wide avenir risers. i actually really love it even though it's a size or two too large for me. shimano hydraulic discs and it's the first time i have ever bled a system. polished it this morning and built it this afternoon, i had built the rear wheel a week ago, and been piecing it together for a week or so before i bought the frame for 15 dollars yesterday. love it! farm8.staticflickr.com/7212/7158054179_0b1350c4d3_k.jpg

I posted this back in 2005 when I bought it, but the link is dead. Here she is as of today. 2001 GT Idrive 6.0, has a Marzocchi Bam z2 fork and an FSA The Pig headset, other than that shes stock.

Cant decide it I should fix her or sell her off and get something new/used that wont require $400-$500 to bring back to a respectable level...

    2011 GT Avalanche 2

I got a brand new 2011 GT Avalanche 2.0 with hydraulic brakes for four Benjamin plus $120 in Performance Bike points for future purchase. I was so excited that I got this bike (never own a mountain bike before) for a net of $279. I know it is very good deal but I do not know the bike well. It was a quick decision since there is only one left (my size) in the store. Performance Bike has a one day special today. Is this a decent entry level bike? I do not want to regret later. Thanks

I have almost the exact same neck on my old mid 90's hardtail, except mine is made by Answer. It uses a single cinch bolt for the handlebars, so no removable end cap. They were intended for flat bars only.

I tried to fish a 3/4" to 1" rise bar through the hole on mine once and it was a no go. If I would have used a big heavy mallet and didn't care about scratching the bars up, I may have been able to force it through.

    So I would say no.

I was trying to figure out an affordable way to get the ergomonics on that bike better for me now. I would have had to replace so many parts to get it the way I wanted, I would have been better off buying a new bike and I did. I bought a new Cannondale 29er.

the stuff on the old bike was just too freakin' outdated.

    Veloben,

I just purchased the same bike today...the deal is very sweet and the bike is solid for beginners and a little more.

I rode my bike today for 10 miles. It was very comfortable, solid and smooth. I also read more about the bike and feel real good about my purchase. Now I am shopping for a bike computer....any recommendation?

So is that thing super fun to ride? or are the wheels heavy and slow?
Looking for a Medium Scott Scale frame, preferably a 2012 in 26.

Another GT Tempest. Could be a 1999 as the stock crankset was a '99 model year. Turned it into a commuter with rear IGH (24" rear wheel, but should be a 26").

Looking forward to a matte black paint and green accents.

Because the rule says the correct number of bikes is n+1. Because you can. I know people that collect pennies....why? They too are almost identical. These bikes are more different than pennies. Different tube sets, fillet brazed vs. TIG welded. Groove tube vs non-groove tube. XT top mount vs XT RapidFire vs. 8spc M900 XTR. I think they are far from identical.

Someone needs to 'STICKY' this thread!
    Here's my 2012 GT Zaskar 100 9r Carbon Pro.

    Today, was her inaugural ride.

    I'm in love.
Red Rocks makes for an awesome backdrop at the Mt. Falcon Trailhead in Morrison, Colorado.

Coming off a 2008 Hard tail Zaskar reissue and a 2001 iDrive Race (both 26") I'd never thought I'd like anything more than either of those bikes. They both KILL IT! I've spent years getting them dialed in. Today, was a game changer.

The re-vamped iDrive, the carbon frame combined with the 29" wheelset - is amazing. This bike climbed like it was on rails. I NEVER felt like I was losing traction. I had the suspension (Fox RP23 rear) set to Medium with the correct pressure for my weight and it moved perfectly when I needed it to without sacrificing energy. If anything, I ran out of gas, before this bike ever did! She just kept begging for me to give more! It was FUN!

The downhill, was awesome, I need to dial everything in a bit, as I changed the tires out from the stock Maxxis Aspen to a Conti X-King in the front and a Specialized Purgatory in the rear... the Aspens look nice, but I wanted two things... tubeless (with Stans kit) and a bit more agressive tread for the trails... This tire combination works WELL - if the tire pressure is right! (I had the front with a bit too much air for a waterbar on the downhill and slid off - luckily, just a little road rash and a cut-up, bruised thumb)

Once I got the tire pressure figured out, the only thing this bike would stop for, were the uphill travelers. Other than that, NOTHING seemed to get in her way.

I cannot WAIT to get out on another ride, on a trail with less people on it, and really open her up.

GT Lovers - they got this one right!

Hey hatake! So nice to run into other GT enthusiasts on the trails! The inaugural ride was rough , but fun! Had too much air in the new tires and went down hard on the DH... I'm fine now... nursing my bruises.

If you ever want a riding companion - let me know! I try to hit the front range trails 1-3 x's a week.

Enjoy the Zaskar! Great looking bike

    Hello,

You must write review now ! I will to buy Sensor 3.0 at next season.

Now I'm riding on i-Drive 3.0 (2004). Great bike at a reasonable price in these days.

Didn't know anyone could write a review on here ( I'm reasonably new on this site)
I got the brand new 2.0 for a STEAL price, $1200 AUD (plus $100 shipping), down from $3000! She's an awesome bright green colour, and if you look close the paint is even metallic, stunning!
Looks like you're using "clipless" pedals, I got some with the bike, but so far have been using normal flats....how do you find the clipless?
