When did the Avalanche switch to a 7000 series frame? I thought all the mid to late 90's Avalanches were 6061? Back in the day (90's) I had always thought the Zaskar and Avalanche were identical frame wise, but maybe not? If I remember right Pacific Cycle was buying GT in the late 90's and maybe this was a cost cutting measure for them? I think the model I'm looking at is a "Avalanche 01". Does anyone have any info on this bike?
I just checked my 97 Avalanche (might be 98) and it is 7000 series. I remember being very close to getting a Zaskar over the Avalanche, but at the time it didn't seem worth it. No info on the Avalanche 01.
according to catalogues; 94, 96, 97 were 7005, 98 was 6061...
But don't be fooled, 7005 is a very good aluminium. Has slightly different properties to 6061. Vaguely (in a general hand waving way) 6061 is easier to weld and make bikes from, 7005 is a stiffer tube, but harder to weld but is better for custom butting to tune the ride better.
