The 40L. What a gem.

Just posted in the photo gallery a series of pictures taken earlier this week during a clockwise ride of the Deerfield Lake 40L trail.

The Forest Service has re-routed some of the trail on the south side. Although the 40L trail goes along paved road 17 for two short segments, it no longer crosses 17. There are a few downed trees and some motorized vehicle barriers to negotiate along the south side of the lake. The north side has some rutting, occasionally deep enough to watch for pedal strikes (these are popular equestrian trails). The east side has several creek crossings to splash through. Lots of rolling, but no long and steep climbs.

14 miles west of Hill City in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Well worth the hour drive from Rapid.
