    1x SRAM dropbar drivetrain

Trying to max out the cassette size, which from what I've seen are only mtb specific, while also using dropbar shifters. This mullet setup seems ever more popular, but mixing and matching is a PITA.
Has anyone tried running a SRAM 11sp road derailleur with a wide range mtb bike cassette?
Feeling frustrated that all of SRAM's mtb 10sp derailleurs max out at 36t(like the GX), which is not large enough for the newer wide range 10 and 11sp cassettes like a 11-46t. What's the actual max cassette these can run on a 1x system?
What about SRAM's 11sp road derailleurs(also exact actuation), like the Rival or Apex 1 that claim to go up to 42t, can they be used with a wide range mtb cassette?
Something else I don't know, what's the largest road cassette? Are road cassettes the same Shimano HG standard freehub body?

Would love to hear about what others are running for 1x large cassette, dropbar systems. Cheers.

C8N, which cassette is that? Is it road bike specific? Isn't there a difference in cog pitch and spacing?

My cross/ gravel bike runs a 10 spd GX rear derailleur with 11 spd Force shifters. I run 1x 40t front and 11-40 rear for gravel and a 11-32 for cross. Shifts perfect.

The Apex 1's have a larger claimed cassette tooth capacity, and it seems like most of the recommended max tooth capacities can be pushed at least a size up. My main concern is cog pitch and spacing and if the Apex 1 road derailleur will have issues with a mtb cassette. According to C8N, this doesn't seem to be an issue. I guess the sturdiness of the GX vs the Apex1 is a consideration.

I'm told a 10spd GX 1x can unoficially do 11-45t cassette, but is rated at 11-42. I have Rival Brifter with a GX rear on a 2x setup. Never had any really issues with the RD for the past 9 months.

I'm running an Apex der on an e13 9-46 11 spd cassette with a Rival shifter.
Over a year now, no issues.

If you want to go really nutso with the RD, you can always do the Garbaruk cage mod. Supposed to be able to run a 10-50 with that.

Hey, my new RM Solo 50 came with an all Apex 1 groupset, with 11 sp XG-1150, 10-42. The 42T chainring made it a bit too tall a gearing for me, so I have gotten an Absolute Black 38T oval (kudos to them: ordered Wednesday night, shipped from Poland Thursday, arrived to me in Canada on Tuesday). This setup I can live with, spinning out around 42-44 kph.

But of course more range is better. Not in a hurry, but I will be very interested to hear of any incremental improvements when it is time to replace the cassette. I had never even considered the mountain bike vs road group differences until now and have some learning to do. Perhaps someone can help answer:

    - practical limit (beyond spec) of cassette gear range, with or without different cage?

    - optimal chain type for the Apex 1 or just any ol' 11 sp chain? For example SRAM has a 1X optimal chain.

    - what other derailleurs if any are compatible with the Apex1 shifters?

I have just poked around the Garbaruk site. I previously slipped a Sunrace 11-40 cassette into my Blizzard 30 setup without issues, gave a nice low end improvement.

EDIT: OOOPS perhaps I should have dug around more - found this thread referencing a Sunrace 10-46:

If you have the money E*13 makes a 9-44t 11speed cassette for Sram free-hub bodies.

i have had great luck with a sram xx1 drivetrain that i have gradually evolved to an xx1 rear der, xx1 thumbshifter (converted to 12 speed w/e-13), next sl cranks, e-13 9-46 12 speed cassette.

light great range, good cog spacing, has been reliable over many thousands of miles.

the shifter is mounted on the cross bar part of the bars so that I can shift from the tops or drops.

I originally altered a light mount to mount the shifter, now paul components makes one though i don't believe that they designed it for the right location- i have made due by shimming one on my wife's bike.

I canít answer the original question, but what I used on my drop bar bike was a full 1x11 GX drivetrain and one of those Paul Components handlebar adapters. The shifter being on the bar near the stem isnít ideal, but it was the best solution I could figure when I built the bike a couple years back.

Steadite, i totally agree that near the stem like they have it is not optimal- you can move those farther out by making a shim to take up the added space- i tried to suggest to pauls that they might want to at least make a shim and there was zero interest
