You use Garmin Basecamp to load maps.

You can use Garmin Birdseye imagery, there is also a method to use tiled .kmz raster imagery (instructions available elsewhere with some Google-fu), and vector maps are .img format (a Garmin-specific format, not to be confused with .img raster satellite imagery). There is also a way to convert .gpx files of trails into Garmin-compatible .img vector image format.

Basecamp puts the file where it needs to go. The location depends on which file type it is.
