    Edge 520

Does the 520 give you speed and distance right out of he box without having any sensors at the wheel? Iím looking for a unit that will run basically by itself without having to install anything other than itís handlebar Mount.
From what I understand it will also work off my iPhone to give me live strava maps?

520 uses GPS for speed and distance. It can connect to other sensors for things like HR and cadence as well, but if you're just looking for speed and distance it's good right out of the box.

I don't use mine for Strava, so someone else will have to chime in.

Yes and yes. You do need Strava premium for live segment integration. But it will upload to Strava even with free Strava.

IMO, for mtb purposes, you owe it to yourself to use a computer plus a wheel sensor. Even though the device will calculate those things without the sensor, the twistier the trails are, the less accurate your accumulated distance will be (because GPS-only distance calculations will shorten curves). The wheel sensor makes it better. And Garmin's magnetless sensors are very nice. they wrap around the hub shell, so there's nothing hanging off your frame, no magnets to go out of alignment with the sensor if you bump it, none of that.

Do you guys think the 520 is ready for an update? Itís been out a few years. I really want a 25 but with twice the battery life. Is anything on the horizon for Garmin?

there is always something new on the horizon. The 25 sucks. Don't buy it.

I went with the 520 and I really like it. Problem is I cannot figure out how to set up text message alerts or Strava segments/ alerts. Can anybody help me out and maybe walk me through it? Thanks

You have to set the appropriate settings on both the Edge itself, as well as on the Garmin Connect app on your phone, and you need an active and reliable Bluetooth connection. You also need a solid cellular connection.
1:39 in this vid addresses pairing with your phone for connected features.

For Strava follow this tutorial after setting up pairing with your phone:
