    Which would you choose.....

I am a longtime roadie rider and just started to enjoy mtn biking. I bought a used Giant Revel HT for $150 just so that I can ride it for a race last weekend and boy it was heavy. I did OK in the race but I have now developed a taste for this sport and now on a journey to upgrading to a new ride.

My fantasy bike would be full carbon, FS, Fox DPX2 rear, Factory 34 fork, Fox Transfer dropper post, remote lock out, Di2 shifting.

    Dream now over

Just to give you an idea on what the local terrain looks like, I have included a youtube vid link:

    I stand 5'7" and weigh a sprightly 140 lbs.

While I know that there are other brands floating out there, our LBS is a huge Giant distributor and has deep discounts. Here are the following specials:

    2016 XTC Advanced SL 27.5 (used) $1200

    2017 Anthem Advanced X 29er $1953

    2018 Anthem Advanced 2 $2320
    https://www.giant-bicycles.com/us/anthem-advanced-2

    2018 Anthem 2 29er $1580
    https://www.giant-bicycles.com/int/anthem-2 (link shows 27.5)

I personally like the used XTC, it's really lightweight but it's a HT (but do I really need a FS bike?).

In no particular order I prefer the following: lightweight, dropper post, remote lock out, suspension efficiency and capability on climbs and descents.

I am not particular about size but I believe conventional wisdom has it that the 29'er are faster. BTW, I can obtain a Trance at a very good deal but will probably cap my budget at $3000...that's if the forum suggests it is a better bang for the buck bike.

    Thanks gang!

No brainer, either one of the Anthem Advanced, just try to get a test ride to decide if you prefer 650B or 29er. Personally I'd think that as a guy, even though you're on the shorter side, that the 29" wheels wouldn't be a problem for you, but I've honestly no clue being 7" taller. If it's all about speed, then I'd guess the 29er would be the obvious choice, but seems like you might also be looking to have fun as well. Either way, smoking deals on those 2 bikes.

Going to throw out something just to mess with you...even though those are smoking deals on the Giants, consider demoing other brands bikes just to see how they compare ride/handling wise, you might find you love the Giant's or you might find you do not and no sense plonking down that sort of $$ on a bike that you might end up not liking in a little bit because you didn't take the opportunity to test other bikes.

If you intend to race seriously, the Anthem 29er is a good choice. If you don't intend to race or won't be competing seriously (rather, just to have fun) then get a Trance if you're stuck with Giant. If you aren't stuck with Giant, and you aren't racing seriously, then maybe try to find a 29er trail bike, something with 120-130mm of rear travel. Don't bother with a used Giant. The lifetime warranty is a big selling point. Without it, they aren't that good a deal.

new update: LBS now has the 2018 Trance Advanced 1 for $2550.

    https://www.giant-bicycles.com/us/trance-advanced-1

Seems like a great deal....nice dropper post, 27.5" so for a shorter guy might do the job, certainly weighs a little bit lighter than a comparable 29er, carbon frame and wheel, and respectable Fox fork and shock.

Color scheme is meh but spec sheet seems strong.

You need to decide what you're doing, either you're going to be riding trails for fun and doing the occasional race for kicks, or you're going to get serious about racing, that would determine which one to choose for me. If you want to race, get the Anthem, if you want to have fun and do some "for fun" races, get the Trance.
