Giant Liv Tempt 3 2016 Headset Specs

Looking to pick up a used 2016 Tempt 3 for my daughter and then upgrade components and fork. Looking to see if anyone knows how these come from the factory and if they will take a 1.5 tapered tube fork with a lower bearing swapout?

The Tempt 3 is a cheap bike with a deadly fork for parents who cannot afford a real bike for their kids (how embarrassing...)

As you're already considering swapping out fork and other components I wonder why you bother with that shit bike in the first place and don't opt for the Tempt 2 instead

you can fit a tapered fork in a 1 1/8 headtube with an external lower bearing but I don't see the point when the costs involved are probably higher than just getting the Tempt2 which comes with much better components all over the place

Because I don't want my kid riding the crap that comes on the Tempt 2 or Tempt 1 either. When I can pick up a 2016 Tempt 3 that is pristine and barely ridden for $300 and use it as a build platform for a full Shimano XT 1/11 drivetrain and put a sale priced SID or Reba fork on with a carbon handlebar and seat post and come out with less cost and less weight than a Tempt 2 or 1. Dude, please crawl back under your rock.

Such an ambitious endeavour requires an advanced skillset like the ability to google for "tapered fork 1 1/8 head tube" by yourself

For anyone with the same question that I had about headset size for the Giant Liv Tempt series bikes, the bikes have 44mm headset openings top and bottom and if you want to use a 1 1/8 X 1 1/2 tapered tube fork you just need to get the specific headset from Cane Creek Tapered ZS44|EC44/40 (Cane Creek Part Number: BAA0717k). I will post some before and after pics once the build is done.

What is this google that you speak of? You mean I can just ask it a question and it will return back everything is knows about a subject? Sounds interesting. It could probably even tell you that no one, not even the builder of a bicycle, has published the design specifications for headset openings of a particular bikes head tube. And then after that, someone, on the premier MTB forums, could post the same question to the MTB community to see if someone has already tackled this problem and could just tell someone else the specifics and save them the trouble. That would be crazy.

FYI you can pickup an Sr suntour epixon online for about $200-250 (which would be an equivalent to a rockshox recon ) with a 1 1/8" steerer ... Spend a little more $250-$275 and you can get a Manitou marvel comp (comparable to a Reba ) also with 1 1/8" steerer

yes. In your case the "tapered fork in 1 1/8 frame" challenge is about as old as the tapered standard itself (~8years), which translates in hundreds of replies and several pages discussing the topic. Even if you wait for 10 people to reply in this thread it would never be as comprehensive as the information you can already source by yourself in a few hours.

And concerning the headset specs, if you don't have the bike yet go in a store and just measure it, it's your job.

Thanks for the info and I think it is great advice for most people in my situation. I ended up getting a great deal on a RS Reba with remote lockout and shock pump on closeout from Bikewagon for $300. Additionally after acquiring the used bike and taking out the headset, I don't want to continue with the crude and heavy open bearings setup with steel cups that they are using on the bike so I would be swapping out the headset anyway with a lighter alloy setup. So getting a new headset would be a sunk cost anyway and bumping to the external cup to accommodate the 1.5 tapered tube would not be an extra cost in my situation.

Tempt 3 Conversion and Upgradeis Complete

Finished the upgrade to the used Giant Liv Tempt 3 that I bought for my daughter. This included changing the fork out from a straight tube to 1.5 tapered steerer tube.

Converted drivetrain to Shimano XT 1x11 with 11-42 cassette and XTR bottom bracket and chain and an SLX shifter.

Swapped out factory Suntour coil fork with a Rockshox Reba which required a headset swap to a Cane Creek headset referenced in my previous post.

Swapped out the factory handle bar with a Truvative T40 carbon flat bar with a 5 degree sweep.

Swapped tires out the Schwalbe Rocket Ron's.

Swapped factory seat with a WTB Volt.

Swapped flat pedals with XT clip-ins.

Weight went from 31 lbs to 24.9 lbs.

Nice work!, and you didn't event touch the wheelset! new wheels would probably drop that bike another 1lbs+ (cheap option fulcrum wheels on chainreaction, $100, but they are narrow 19mm )

Good call and I already had that in the works. New wheelset is on the way already. Great closeout deal on Shimano XT with 9mm QRs for $220.00. This will take about 1.2 lbs off the bike. Will use the original set and tires for non-race season riding. New wheels should be in next week and I will post new pic.
