    2018 Fathom 2 vs 2017 Fathom 1

    Hi everyone,

I'm looking to purchase my first mountain bike, and was initially going to purchase the 2018 Fathom 2.

    https://www.giant-bicycles.com/au/fathom-29er-2

However, the bike shop I went today also has the 2017 Fathom 1 on sale for the same price as the 2018 Fathom 2!

    https://www.giant-bicycles.com/au/fathom-29er-1-2017

Which do you think would be the better purchase?

    Fathom 2 Pros
The 2018 Fathom 2 has tubeless tyres and a dropper seat post

    Fathom 1 Pros
Better forks w/ thru axle, the storeperson also mentioned that it has slightly better components.

    What would you choose?

    Thanks for your help guys!

IMHO - 2018 Fathom 2. As a beginner you wonít be able to tell the difference between the fork models and they are both thru axle. Components can also be upgraded with your skill.
Wheelset and a dropper are great additions to this bike!

Thanks for your reply! I do really like the dropper seat post and tubeless tyre additions on the 2018 fathom 2, but Wouldn't it be easier to get the 2017 fathom 1 and upgrade the seat post and tubeless tyres down the line than to replace components?

Find out if the XC3 rims are tubeless ready. If they are then go with the 1. Looking closer I didnít realize it was a 1x drivetrain, so I think your idea of the 1 is now the direction I would lean.

Hey so I ended up going with the 2018 fathom 2. The rims on the fathom 1 were not tubeless ready, and I figured the 2x drivetrain would actually be more ideal for me since I will have to use the bike for commuting as well. (Not really important, but the fathom 1 also looks like it was designed by a kid on acid). Thanks for your help though it was much appreciated!
