    2017 vs 2018 Anthem 2

I'm looking to purchase a new bike and was leaning towards the 2018 Anthem 2, but came across a good deal on a 2017. From what I can tell, the only real changes on the 2018 are:

    - extra 10mm of travel
    - wider bars
    - better tires (+tubeless)
    - 46t vs. 42t

Now I'm considering going with the 2017 and saving the ~$800 for future upgrades. The only other thing to consider is the 2018 would be from a semi-local shop (~10mi), and the 2017 would be from a shop on ~75mi away.

To me the 2018 upgrades plus local shop support don't seem like they are worth the extra money, but I'm interested in hearing others thoughts.

There are a few other differences. The 2018 comes with the newer M7000 breaks, where the 2017 has the M615 breaks. As well, the rims on the 2018 are XC-1 rims so they are slightly wider.

If you want the extra travel on the front, you can get a replacement height adjust kit for the Fox34 to take them to 130, 140, 150 or even 160mm of travel. That will, however, depending on the amount of sag you adjust them for, change the head tube angle.

The cassette on the back wheel can be changed out to give you that larger 46t at any time as there is no difference between the rear derailleur of the two bikes. As this is a wear item I would not consider that as a big deal. You might find that after riding you want the larger or closer spaced cassette. there are many options for replacements.

I believe that bar widths are identical.

The 2017 can go tubeless, you just have to put the tape on, buy the stans and a new valve stem. Again, those are ware items so it's not that you are locked into riding with a tube if you don't want to.

I went with the 2017 as I got is for such a better price it didn't make any sense to get the 2018. I saved more than the $800 and figured that in savings alone, I could buy a new much better set of rims than the ones sold standard on the 2018. I didn't see and advantage on the 46t, and actually took off the front SLX30 tooth chainring and replaced it with a 36t as I am a gear grinder and prefer the speed as I tended to flip the front over with the 30t ring. I replaced the bars with a set of carbon and put on better grips. put on a 35deg rise stem as I am 6'2 and what comes I find the bars are just too low for my comfort.

Thanks for the detailed reply, I appreciate it. I was leaning towards the 2017 since I don't really think I need the extra travel, and as you mentioned I could complete most of the same upgrades with the money saved and still come out ahead.

Did you buy your 2017 new? I'm just curious how you got such a good deal.

Yes. My LBS had a single Large frame Anthem2 and I had been into the shop all of last year and I guess after about showing up every other week, the owner took pitty on me and sold it for a price I could not refuse.
