When is it worth packing & traveling with a bike?

My wife and I are taking an extended vacation to Kauai, which I understand has some pretty incredible mountain biking. At what point is it more beneficial to bring your own bike rather than rent?

    For me, anytime.

I am above average in size, and I rarely find something to rent. (6'4", 235lb) If you are into chi-chi bikes and parts, take your own with you. You will not find high end bikes to rent. The other thing I factor in is how many rides I will be able to go on. If the answer is more than 1, I take my own. My reasoning is that after 1 ride on a rental, I will not go again. Follow me?
