    Used Rocket 88-worth it?

A buddy of mine wants to sell me a used '00 or '01 schwinn rocket 88 frame plus some bottom-end parts for 150 bucks. Anybody know how reliable these frames are?

I would pass on it. There are many new frames out for a little more $$$, but worth it IMO.

Jensons is selling a stripped KHS XC204 frame for $269

Adrenaline is selling a stripped Iron Horse Warrior 5" travel all mountain frame for $299 with seatpost, headset and seat collar.

You get a 1 year warranty with KHS and a 5 year one with Iron Horse.

The Rocket is out of warranty and the current owners of Schwinn may not even have replacement parts at this point.

    No good

This is just one data point but my buddy has one of those. It broke twice while Schwinn was still in business and he bought a new Ellsworth the second time. He's only put maybe a handful of rides on the replacement frame since (he has a hardtail as well for another backup). Well the pos just broke again. This time I think he's SOL. Pretty much same place everytime, the bb pivot area. I would steer clear.

Don't bother with an 00 that has a pivot around the BB. If it's an 01 you could be ok. If it's an 01' 21" I could be interested.

buy it with the knowledge you can't get replacement parts or servie on it.
I had one and loved it for a couple years a great XC frame - NOT for any big hit or hucks.
if the pivot is around the BB its '00. the '01 moved the pivot.
the higher the stage the lower end the bike
I had a stage one which was like 3000 new.
you could get a newer frame for just a little bit more. and it is 5 years old now
but I really liked mine - great geometry - it fit me like a glove.

If you're asking if it's a good deal: I sold my 01 for $180 on ebay. Frame, headset, post, front der, seat.

If you're asking if it's a good bike: I loved it. I moved up to a "trail" style fs, from this "xc" style fs.
Take the long cut, we'll get there eventually.

aha...it's an 01 then, because it has the pivot above the BB, but the shock has the old school Fox decals.
I'm really wanting to go for it, but since I need new cranks and the IRS is knocking at my door, it may have to wait a while...
