SPD cleats are SPD cleats are SPD cleats or are they?

I just picked up some new cleats (Shimano number, SM-SH52) and noticed on-line that these are for M858 pedals only.

    How can that be?
What evil will befall me if I tried to use them on other shimano pedals?

I dont want to just try them because I will want return them if necessary.
    Any help?
    Thanks,
    FR

If you have ever followed directions for cooking or making something that requires additional components, the manufactures always instruct you to use Brand A or Material Vendor 1 by name(extra $ for them). If you use Brand B or Material Vendor 2 the outcome will be the same.

I have used both branded Shimano SPDs and lesser brands. They all work. They all will wear out. They all need to be replaced. Don't sweat it.

There are only the SPD-SL cleats and the mountain cleats with the mountain cleats being multi or single release. All of the mountain cleats are compatible with every shimano mountain pedal ever made so assuming you are riding mountain pedals you should be golden.
