Caution; Merge; Workers Ahead! New Users Check in Here - official introductions thread

With the change in the posting requirements, we've created this thread here for newbies to introduce yourself.

Hopefully this will unite all the "hello there" or "checking in" or "new here first time post" threads currently popping up here in the general forum.

    Please respond with:

1.) Where you are from? (as specific as you care to share)
2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? (ex: beginner, weekend warrior, all mtn/trail rider, XC racer, downhiller, singlespeeder, 29er rider, etc...)
3.) How many bikes you own?
4.) How long have you been riding?
5.) What forums do you frequent most? (either here or on other sites)

Add anything else you care to share.

    Thanks,

    -gregg

ADDENDUM: DO NOT TRY TO PAD YOUR POST COUNT HERE! THEY WILL BE DELETED AND YOU WILL RECEIVE AN INFRACTION! NO TESTING EITHER. It's really not that hard to find 5 already existing threads to reply to.

Also of Note: Due to the high volume of Spammers trying to flood the site with fake posts all new users are required to post at least 10 replies to threads BEFORE you can start a new thread that includes Links to other web pages (including other mtbr pages) or links to photos. Once your post count is above 10 then you can begin to do this. - Klurejr

    I don't have a name.
I'm from the SF Bay Area (peninsula). **** yea, NorCal. Represent.
I am a singlespeeder. I can't count all the geary doodads.
I got: a KHS singlespeed conversion, a 2010 Raleigh "road" bike, and am building a singlespeed/ fixed badass cyclocross-type thing for the summer. I've got a '73 Schwinn Le Tour frameset. If you got parts for sale that would work with it, please PM me. I'd appreciate that.
I guess I've been actively riding for two or three years. Been riding bike in general my whole life though.
I mainly do General, Passion, Norcal, and Singlespeed forums. On occasion I'll visit XC training/racing and get scared and run back to Singlespeed.
Sometimes, I question the value of my content.

Hey guys, I'm from Charlotte, NC.
I'm an intermediate/advanced all mountain rider. I tend to ride whatever comes my way. Don't care one way or another, but I do find technical terrain more entertaining.
Riding a Stumpjumper Elite as of now.
As of now I mainly frequent the Tarheel Trailblazers Forum. Local club in Charlotte.

Joined to research riding out west. It's nice to meet you all! Looking forward to gathering your perspectives.

Good job! Late getting started, but making up for it

oh, gee. Another noob at the door. But a noob with WHEELS two at a time!

I ride the hills and valleys in and around Novato, CA, a tad north of San Francisco. Been riding bikes (seriously) since 1988 when I retired from the Army, but have had a bike handy all my life. Retired from serious CC and hills these days, even converted my 94 S-Works to a cruiser (yikes) and mostly do easy trails and long road trips now since I'm getting more concerned with the effects of body parts crashing to the ground, something I did with GUSTO in my younger days. Yeeee HAW! Joining my S I have a 94 Hard Rock Ultra, and an 88 BMX Mongoose (27" with goosers). That one is a decent ride, 'cept when the wind is blowing off the ocean at 40 mph. And I'm going west 20 miles. And then it shifts to the WEST at 45 mph just about the time I'm heading back. I first found your site while looking for rebuild help for a Fox Alps4. (The forums here ROCK!!!!). Will come back and edit some photos after I digi them.

Very happy to have found y'all!!

4.) I got my first mtb in 1998. Didn't start riding seriously for about a year.

Hi there, I'm Allie from Santa Cruz. I guess technically I'm a newbie to mountain biking, though I've been mashing around on bikes of one kind or another all of my life. I think for the time being I probably fit most comfortably into cross country, although I'm looking forward to expanding my horizons into more all mountain terrain. Most of the trail riding I've done has been on rather rickety borrowed bikes, but I've decided that I like this sport enough that it's time I invest in my own entry level bike, which is what brought me to this forum. This is the first forum that I've really explored. I'm excited to glean from the knowledge and experience here

    Hi there
I'm Kody from SE Brisbane, Australia.
I haven't been riding for long so I'd say I'd fit under a Beginner All Mountain?
I own one bike at the moment, a 2005 Specialized Hardrock Sport
I've been riding since 2005, on and off and have decided to get serious with it.
At the moment I'm frequenting the brake corner (have a post about upgrading my discs to BB7's), the Specialized area, Passion, and Australian areas.
Good to be here and I've already learnt more than I have in 5 years.
    Thanks

Hello everyone I am a new rider to mountain bikes I have never owned one but my friend is a huge biker and he gave me one of his older ones it is a Giant Sedona ATX it is like 15 years old but he had it tuned up before it went into storage like 3 years ago.

He also gave me a trunk rack for my car.

I am trying to get into biking and my wife is going to get her moms that she never uses but hey it is a cheap start.

I am from Missouri in Blue Springs. I want to start off slow and maybe just go on some paved trails then some not paved trails but if anyone has any ideas for a beginner newbie please let me know.

    Thanks

Hey all, I'm Tony from Valparaiso, IN. Avid bike fan, not so much a newbie but new to the forum. Been a roadie most of my life, but did own a Mongoose NX 8.3 at one time (sold it). Still have my Schwinn Paramount in all chrome 4130 chromoly, super sweet when it's polished. Recently, I talked about wanting to get another mountain bike for riding trails, gravel roads out where I live and hitting some trails/single track through the woods. So my daughters, with their limited funds from being college students, bought me a Mongoose XR Comp for Father's Day. It's a long way from my old NX 8.3, but nonetheless, I appreciated their effort and gift. I went from front to back, top to bottom, ensuring every bolt, nut, clamps, etc. was tight (since I don't trust a kid assembling a bike) and properly adjusted. I had some parts lying around the garage so I exchanged the rear 850 lb. spring for a 1250 lb. spring and tightened up the front fork, though not sure if it really made any difference. But for a guy in his 50's, the bike suits me and my riding style perfectly. Yeah...I know other brands are out there, but it was a surprise gift from my daughters and they were so proud to give it to me...so coming from them, it's the best bike I've owned! It's a keeper, but I know I will exchange parts from time to time to improve it, but I can't ever get rid of it.

Do they still put bar ends on the handlebars? I rarely see them.

    Run what works for you!
We have a pro named Elbry Sandland, that rides for Mountain Cycle, that still uses bar ends for some races. He seems to like them for Enduro events, as it gives you multiple hand positions.

I am a noob to the MTB world, I used to ride/race BMX but an injury stopped that.
I only have one bike a 2 hardtail.

    1) My name is Mark, I'm in Sunrise, FL with my fiancé Amy, son Caiden, and a bun in the oven!
    2) I am a weekend warrior/beginner, fiancé is a beginner, son is too young and rides a trailer (not on trails tho!)
    3) 2 bikes, my 2011 trek/fisher wahoo, fiancé's 2011 trek skye s
    4) I used to ride as cross training for track/cross country from 1999-2000, fell out after college, career (still working on lol, in air traffic control school now, and child) but getting back in for the last 2 months...
    5) mostly on general, beginners, and trek forums, if I move up north to NH I'll frequent the downhill forum to learn what I can, really interested in downhill/freeride, but south FL is pretty flat.

Great forum, I've learned a lot, and appreciate the feedback i get, and try to learn as much as I can from the knowledgable people on board to excite the passion of mountain biking!

    Hello All

Just checkin in as a newbie, although my main email would not work saying that I was already a member, so I have probably done this forum before years ago.

    Mainly ride in Maryland
Build up my own bikes right now Dean Ace, selling my YBB, sold my single speed Specialized.
Been riding since 1998 actively when I made the switch from BMX (man those wheels look small now)
Considered goin 29er but "the boys" rested on the top bar of even the smallest framed 29ers at the bike shop, and I wasent feeling the girls frame idea.

    From Florence, SC
    I'm kind of a weekend warrior, I ride 9 miles about 3 or 4 days a week.
Trail riding but not crazy aggressive.
Rode all my life on Wal-bikes, been out of it for about 7 years, just got back in to it and went to LBS and bought a Trek. Man, what a difference.
I got my whole family doing it.
Looking forward to all of your knowledge.

    Greetings!

    1] Seattle, WA
2] mostly city roads and trails
3] two bikes: GT Karakoram and Janus Sedona
4] riding 45 years and going strong...

I started riding a bike like many American kids on my sister's three speed, then got my own Stingray....wow! What fun, except for that time that I forgot to tighten the front wheel then trid to make that jump down at the new house being built at the end of our street....but I digress.....

I went through a phase of riding a ten speed in high school, also like many American kids, then dropped the thing like a hot potato when I got my driver's license....

Decades passed and the mountain bike craze is in full swing and low and behold, I discover the form factor of the 26" bike to be much closer to me on a 20" as a pre-teen than me on a 27" road bike and I am liberated! Now riding a bike is fun again, like when I was a kid! No more worrying about weanie tire that pop if you ride over a stone, here's the curb-hopping appeal of riding a bike that I lost when I moved over to gasoline fueled transportation!

Now I've gone over to the dark side and discovered the joys of suspension on the fork, which my aging hands and upper body appreciate more than the added weight, and I'm going strong into my fifth decade of pedal sports!

    Hey there, I'm Luis
    I am from Mexico
I like to consider myself an aggressive Cross country - Soft All mountain rider
I have one bike I use and I'm on the process of building 2 more
I've been riding since 2009, but suspended 8months for a small injury
I love MTBR and I read BikeRadar often too

I still consider myself a beginner, because I have almost no time to ride during the week and I'm just reriding often on weekends, luckily for me, I live in the outer parts of the city, where there are a few trails to ride alone.
I LOVE riding and I love to do bike mechanics, so I decided to build my own bikes.
I bought a mexican brand hardtail frame, that is supposed to be strong enough for a 140 mm fork.
I have also a Jamis Dakar XCT. I'll be asking for advice soon
    Nice to meet everyone

My name's Ray. Recently made the decision to start riding for my general fitness. After breaking my back a few years ago I've gained a bunch of weight. I'm lucky, I have a friend that was an avid rider and he has gotten back into riding to help me out. he told me to come on here and check things out. I picked up this Trek from another friend that just had it sitting in the back of his garage for the past few years. We're slowly repairing things it needs. So far my total investment is about $55 and a few hours of labor, between buying the bike and a couple tubes to get it up and moving.

1.) Where you are from? Blythewood SC
2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? beginner
3.) How many bikes you own? 1, a 2003 Trek that I bought from a friend
4.) How long have you been riding? just started
5.) What forums do you frequent most? mostly car and truck sites.

Hey all. I'm Den. Recently discovered my passion for bikes after a long hiatus due to the last bike I loved being stolen. Prior to that I was out riding every friday and saturday night thru town with mates just being a general pain in the ass lol. And every saturday and sunday we'd be out hitting the skate parks, trails or just cruising around town.

I had a few different bikes back then. The 2 main ones were an old cheapy 24" MTB that I had fitted a 20" single speed rear wheel. Looked terrible but I loved it haha. The second was my free agent/diamondback BMX. Trusted that bike with my life which I find hard to do. So when it was stolen so was my passion for riding. But I'm slowly getting back into the game after realising that riding around is actually a great way to stay fit.

1.) Where you are from? Gold Coast, Australia.
2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? Weekend warrior at the moment.
3.) How many bikes you own? I own 6 bikes at the moment, 4 I'm keeping to use, 1 I'm fixing up for a friend and the last is a POS for parts.
-Specialized HT MTB (unsure of model or year), currently my commuter
-Easton BMX (unsure of model or year), just for learning tricks and stuff
-Apollo road bike (unsure of model or year), going to be a resto project
-An old beach cruiser, no idea of make or model or year as I'm only new to these cruisers. But damn it looks cool! I will post pics up as soon as I give them all a bit of a clean, hopefully someone might be able to help identify the models I have.
4.) How long have you been riding? On and off for about 14 years
5.) What forums do you frequent most? I shall start to frequent this site as well as Australian Cycling Forums. And any others that might be worth a looksie.

    Cheers!

Hey all, new to the sight !

47 YO fanatic from Murrieta. I'm pretty fit, and would classify my self advanced intermediate.

Looking to find riding buds, and talk about bikes. I also regularly buy, build and or flip bikes and components so I may do some buying and selling here to.

Gonna go post my ride(s) in one of the other forums now.

    Noob here.

I'm from Riverside, California. I recently started riding again after taking about a 15 year hiatus. Been trying to ride every weekend up until last weekend. Took a spill while out riding last weekend. Now I'm on the couch nursing a broken clavicle and 5 broken ribs. Hope to be back on the bike in 5 or 6 weeks.

    I currently own 2 MTB

    Hello

I live in Tacoma WA. I have been looking into getting a 29er. I'm 6'3. I have been riding for years but don't currently own a bike due to deployments and knee surgery. I would like as much advice on what 29er to look at. I'm looking for something around 600 and a hardtail. Thank you for any advice you could give an old soldier.

    Greetings

I am from coastal Maine and am now living in Washington.
I am an all mountain rider when I am not racing XC as an expert.
3 bikes -- SC Blur, Felt F4, and GT DHi
    Been riding consistently 17 years.
I'm not much of a forum dude, though when traveling I look up trials on this site. To my dismay, most posts are out of date. I decided I should contribute to the MTB community by sharing trail knowledge since I travel frequently and ride all over N. America.

Hi, my name is Steve and I live in the SF bay area.

I am getting back into riding after an 8 year hiatus from racing. I have a new 2010 stumpjumper expert carbon with a few upgrades that I ride a couple times a week, and a steelman road bike for cruising around on.

I look forward to meeting some great people on the forum and getting some advice as well.

Hi guys I'm from Leavenworth KS. I just started riding a few months ago. I was riding a Trek 4300 but am now riding a Gary Fisher Rig which feels like a huge improvement. I am starting to get into xc racing, have only done one race so far, none on the new bike yet. I need to get my five posts in so i can start making threads and asking questions.

    Hello All!

Been lurking here for a few weeks. Decided to jump into the forum tonight. Truth is, I had a question to ask, but can't start a new thread until I post 5 times! So hello! LOL.

I live in the Tampa area. Just getting into riding. Used to ride the heck out bmx bikes as a kid/teen. Now I'm ready to kick it up again at 38 years old!

    Cheers!

I'm in the same boat. I get the rule, it just doesn't entirely make sense to me. I'm going to end up posting things that just aren't that meaningful.

I'm not much of a forum dude, though when traveling I look up trials on this site. To my dismay, most posts are out of date. I decided I should contribute to the MTB community by sharing trail knowledge since I travel frequently and ride all over N. America.

Berkshire raised, in Boston for School

1.My name's Will I'm from Pittsfield, the Berkshire Hills of W. Mass.
    2. I consider myself a beginner/intermediate XC Rider. Love the up just as much as the down.
    3. I ownED a Specialized Rockhopper 29er (HT) w. C29ssmax wheelset, reba fork. It was fun until that mofo got stolen last week. When insurance money comes in I will hopefully be the proud owner of a new Niner Air 9, same wheels and fork, 2x10. I also have a 70s roadie to get me around campus, and on the occasional road bike trip.
    4. Started mt biking when I was about 11, but took about a 4 year hiatus until I graduated HS.
    5. I spend a lotta time reading 29er forum, as well as component reviews, and check up on NEMBA for New England mtb advocacy now and again, and also to find new riding areas. I'm gonna try to be more active and participate in trail work days, etc. Been living in Boston for 3 years, so still finding new places out here. Some are actually etter than you'd think! I'm also very involved in Northeastern University's outing club, and help run lots of trips with them, biking, camping, hiking, etc. Considering joining NUcycle team for the fall. Anyone riders who know the area, I'd love to explore with someone who knows where all that secret singletrack is out here. I won't tell anyone.

I was in your shoes about 2 years ago. I decided I was gonna ride the thing hard as I could, get as much outta the shitty parts, and replace as things broke. Dart 3 shat the bed fast as anyone would expect, and I went with a rockshox reba. Great choice, thing was worlds apart. Smooth, quick to engage, plenty of travel for the riding I do. Idk how your tora is holding up, that's deff better than my dart 3.

Then my hubs got effed mid ride, and had to do some jerry rigging to make it out. Shaving off that rotational weight, and adding some stiffness will make you much faster. If you can get something down below 1800g, it will feel amazing. When I got my new wheels I felt like a different rider. I found a pair of crossmax 29s on craigslist supercheap and they are unbelievable. Bombproof. Spend some time on the reviews section, and find somethin in your price range. Look for deals on ebay and craigslist too! Pricepoint is a good site also. I'm not gonna pretend I'm good with maintenance, but basics you probably already know are keep chain lubed, clean your drivetrain and fork if you get it super muddy, and bleed your brakes when its due (even tho no one ever does really). Do you like the hydraulics? my new build is coming and has them and I'm pretty stoked.

    Howzeeet

    I am Frank

I am originally from Cape Town, South Africa, but I am currently living and working in the South of Thailand. The group I have been ridng with does mostly cross country. We have one nutter in the group who does not use brakes down hill and I love trying to keep up with him. I have one lover.........I mean bike at the moment, GT avalanch. I have been on two wheels for as long as I can remember; I was the number one ranked BMXer for my state when I was 12 years old - 23 years ago. Been on motorcylces for many years. Finally bought a mountain bike this year and the bug bit.........I ride my bike like an addiction.........can't get enough and every ride seems like the best ride I have ever had; i ride about 6 or 7 times a week, often twice a day. A lot of my old BMX skills are coming back making the MTB the greatest rush since the band Rush. I have always loved adrenalin buzzing sports; I surfed and skateboarded back in SA. MTBing is so totally $&#$%ing amazing because I get out into nature and I love the burn....BURN BABY BURN!!!!! I am entering my first MTB cross country race on Sunday July 10, 2011 and I am really amped!!!!

I have never posted on forums before, so I guess this means my cherries just been popped.

*As a kid, I rode around on my bicycle waiting to one day step up onto a motorcycle; as an adult, I now realize that the bicycle is where it's always been and that I am still a kid .

Go the rockhopper mate. Depending on who you talk too GTs can be questionable (not my personal opinion, just what I've heard-no offense to any GT owners). I've had my Specialized (Hardrock Sport) for about 4 years now and love it. They make great bikes. The only thing I've had to replace are the brakes, from tektro mechanicals to BB7s.

Thanks Dude, yeah the guy at my LBS said the frame is all new for 2012 and so are the rims, headset and a better fork than last year. I test rode it and felt way better than the GT and better than the hardrock sport 29ers.
Im going to bite the bullet and buy the RockHopper.

They are a really nice bike, and specialized really know how to put them together-it's worth the extra money. When I inevitably upgrade to a full suspension bike I will most likely end up with another specialized (stuntjumper I think) as I couldn't be happier with my Hardrock, even after the mods I've done. Hope you enjoy your new bike!

    Also and ex-BMXer

I grew up on a BMX too, but stopped riding biycles for some time. Bought a mountain bike a few months ago and all the ol' skills are coming back. I love doing wheelies, little jumps, stoppies and bunny hopps (any excuse to get my butt in the seat). I want to find some nice jumps and burms to try got some real hight...........aaahhhh the good ol' BMX days. Having the BMX background has really prepared me for technical climbs up step rocky or rooty inclines and adrenaline pumping, life flashing before you, downhill bursts. Love MTBing, just surprised it took me so long to find out.

I own a 2010 Raleigh talus 29er and it has been bringing me everywhere and has not been failing. I made a account for MTBR a week ago to post an ad on the classified. From So Cal around Long Beach area
Used to race BMX and free ride. Now I want to get into MTB / Down hill / Road bikes (mainly for my triathlons)
Took a big break from it, but I was racing for a couple years
Go to car forums mostly, and occasionally fitness forums.

Just bought a Motobecane 700 (say what you will, it was cheap) and I'm looking forward to putting it through its' paces. Hope to see some of you out there.

    Hello MTBR World!

I am David, Originally from Concord, NC, but living in Durham now.

I consider myself an experienced rider, i've been riding since age 6. Always wide open and pushing the envelope its a miracle i'm still alive. I ride mostly singletrack, and I have a road bike that I like to get out and just chalk up the miles on.

Currently I have 4 bikes in my house. A hybrid for grocery trips, single speed, road bike, and the moutain bike i'm working on. Almost finshed with it.

    Guess thats it for now.

Well, it's official. One of the mods is a puss and doesn't like guns. So much in fact that he/she deleted my entire thread about firearms and they knew there were to many good points in there. I don't know what it is with people that hate guns.....did they have a gun chase them down street one day? O that's right, guns are inatimate objects unable of doing something on their own, kinda like a kitchen knife. For a kitchen knife to hurt someone a person must use it incorrectly......same with a gun. But now I'm using LOGIC. Sorry about that, some here don't know what that is.

    S'mae pob / Hi guys
My name's Trefor and I'm from Wales.
I'm a wrinkly old duffer and should know better but I'm out riding XC an AM as often as possible. Local routes here on the Berwyn mountain and the MTB centres nearby.
Main bike is my RIP9, then my Kona Hei-Hei 2-9, mu On-one Inbred 29er and my 1967 Mercian King of Mercia road bike. Been riding since '67 when I bought the Mercian.
    What's a forum? Sounds rude...

Not got a good photo of me out on the trails but here's the RIP9 on the Marin trail in the Gwydyr forest.

I'm a firearm fan as well, but this IS a bike forum. Maybe the MOD was just trying to do damage control and keep from having a political debate that has nothing to do with cycling. But hey, if you ever wanna talk firearms, shoot me a message haha.

    Hello

    Good Morning all.

I am sadly from LaPorte, IN for now. Trying to get back to Ocala, FL. I lived there for 9 years and family talked me back to Indiana. Live and Learn!!! Hopefully by the end of summer I will have my ducks in a row and get back to Ocala.
I am a Paramedic. I work on a Critical Care Team for Prompt Ambulance.
I consider myself a weekend warrior. I haven't had my hands on too many quality bikes yet but I am in the market for sure. Back when I lived in Ocala I found out about the Ocala Mountain Bike Club, went out and bought a cheapo mountain bike. If you guys ever get a chance to check out the park in Ocala do it. Its awesome. I rode it every chance I got. Got pretty decent at it with the lead sled I was riding. I have a long, long history of bike riding. BMX when I was younger, then got into mountain biking after the 18-21 year old bike free slump.
Well thats about all I can say at the moment. I am looking hard for another bike. I have a 2 month old lil girl that I am dying to take in her little trailer at Potato Creek (campground). When I find what I want and can afford I will be checking all the local trails. I guess there are a lot around here but you have to watch your @$$. So the LCP will be close by! Well, new to the site but am not too much of a newbie. If anyone has any questions feel free.

2.Not a beginner. Ammature I would say; I've been riding on and off for the pure fun of it for the last 15 years.
    3. I have one bike, in transition right now. I had been riding a Jamis Komodo that I put together back in '04, but am now using what I can of it to build up an '07 vintage Cannondale Rush. So many standards have changed in that time. I can't buy many new parts, I have to fish them off E-Bay!
    4. This is the first forum I've stopped by on this site, which I've used countless times to look at reviews for years...Just never looked at the forums.
    5. I check out ducati.ms, and ferrarichat.com religiously. I have an old Ducati, and have my eye on an old 308GTB.

    Newb from Texas

Hi all, Kai here from Katy,TX
Riding bikes since I can remember.
Raced BMX for a few years till I got a YZ80.
Bought new Stumpjumper M2FS in 1994, raced and rode it for a couple years and still have it. Has many upgrades.
Have not ridden it in about 12 years now...Had a couple kids in my practice marriage that changed priorities.
Ready to start spinning again and getting the bike back up to speed.
Don't see myself racing through the woods anymore, but would like to get back on the trails and get my fat ass back into some kind of shape besides round.

I have a question to start off with...

I have a Judy FSX that has a Risse Racing Gem that has apparently leaked out. I had to rebuild it during my racing spree and it needs it again. Can I still get a rebuild kit for it? If I remember correctly I bumped it up to 3 inches or 75mm...Does this sound right? Forgive me as I've been out of the loop for quite awhile.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

besides introducing myself, i'd like to get some advise... about 4 years ago my wife and i bought sturdy entry level schwinns from a bike shop. 2 years later i decide to try racing (beginner lever) and bought a 2003 epic pro. great shape and cheap. soon after however i developed knee issues--bascially my kneep cap was no longer tracking correctly. last dec i had athro w/ lateral release and recovery is taking longer than expected. in fact i may not be able to ride for a year or two.
question: do i sell it THE EPIC while it still has some resale value, and later by another, or do i keep it?
    thanks!

Guess this kind of thing can only happen in Thailand..........................on the third lap of a four lap race (one lap being 7 km) and this marshal stops me and says they have dicided to make it a three lap race....................DAMN..............I wish someone could have told me that at least one lap ago. How on earth can you change the distance of a race while the race is on. Here's me, pacing myself and ready to cut loose of the 4th and final lap.........................little bit sickening really..................its not like I was one of few who did only three laps, the whole damn field did only three................why on earth did several folks tell me four laps at the beginning and if for whatever reason they changed the distance of the race DURING THE RACE surely they should have let the competitors know .........................living in South East Asia certainly has its moments and this was one of the more memorable ones......................T.I.T................... .this is Thailand.

Hello, My name is Scott, and hopefully I can actually post here, because I haven't been able to respond to any threads, or create any in any of the other forums, leaving me wondering just how I am going to get the 5-10 posts that the system keeps telling me I need..

Joined the forum for general knowledge, I don't have the aspirations of most, I just like to get out and ride with my wife and daughter (age 6) on local bike paths for the together time, and the exercise. Maybe one day (if we get into good enough shape) I'd like to try to tackle some really easy dirt trails together as a family (trying to find a tagalong/half wheeler for our daughter so we can stop renting it!)

1.) Where you are from? Baltimore, Md. Area
2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? Beginner/Newbie
3.) How many bikes you own? One, an ancient 1994 Giant ATX860 (yes, my username was a typo, and e-mails to the moderator about it have gone unanswered..), but I like it, and it serves my purposes..
4.) How long have you been riding? Well, I guess the right answer is I'm just getting back into it..
5.) What forums do you frequent most? No other Bike Forums at this time..

Giant ATX870 (Scott): try posting/asking questions in the area specific VA/MD forum, and families and riding with kids forum. Your wife can post/question in the women's forum. You should build up a few posts quickly.

Just would like to make some friends for chatting/learning/riding.

    Hey, im new.
    From Kankakee, Illinois,
RIding a Gary Fisher 29er Mamba
I own this and still have a bmx freestyle bike.
Been riding MTB for about 3 months now.
This is the only forum I frequent.

I bmxed for about 10 years on a very regular basis, mostly park and street. Basically quit for a while, got married fat and lazy and still had a desire to ride all the time just not my tiny bmx bike griding and doing tricks, just felt like cruising through the woods.

Been riding some local trails and multitrack trying to build up some skills and recently started riding the very well mantained singletrack up north a bit, and I love it to death. Kind of wish I would have spent a bit more on my bike but oh well,I probably would have no matter what I spent. Definately a lot of fun and pretty laid back.

    Hey guys,

My name's Chuck, just graduated college from the University of Pittsburgh

1.) Originally from Irwin, PA (Pittsburgh Area)
2.) I do a little bit of everything (all mountain, road, and trying to get into some downhill)
    3.) 1 mountain bike
4.) Off and on for about 6-7 years I suppose, trying to get back into it now since I'm going to have the time
5.) I'm also really into cars and fabricating techniques, shop talk, etc. you can find me by the same user name at bimmerforums.com, garagejournal.com, and allmetalshaping.com

can't post pics yet, but i originally bought my bike a couple years ago. it hasn't seen much use on account of school and everything else, but im glad that time is finally starting to come back around. its a 2003 jamis dakar xlt 1.0. certainly not cutting edge by any means but it gets me around.

Oh yeah and I'm from Troy Alabama, I'm new to the sport,(less than a year) but I've had the opportunity to ride in some of the best places ( fruit Colorado, Moab Utah, Ashland Oregon, and I'll get to ride in Zion in less than a month) thanks to a trip I made with two of my friends this summer to work at a guest ranch in etna California , I love fast singletrack, I live in the woods in Alabama but the desert was definitely a welcomed change to my biking experience, It doesn't matter where I am if I'm on my bike and there are hills I'm happy

I am a custom knifemaker from Central Florida. I build custom tactical folding knives using stte of the art materials, some of which I see frequently on bikes, titanium and carbon fiber.

I just started riding bicycles, rode dirtbikes and four-wheelers habitually a decade ago. I can't resist hitting the black, double black, and double red diamond tracks, but most at home on the semi-technical black diamonds with plenty of climbs, drops, and switchbacks. I have already benefitted immensely from this site and I thank all of you for taking the time to share your knowledge for all us newbies to learn. I look forward sharing my own experiences.

    Howdy

64 yr old from Santa Rosa, Ca - one hour north of San Francisco Bay

Ride as often as possible - Annadel State Park is almost next door

been riding seriously since around 05

consider myself an intermediate in the slow and old catagory

have a couple hardtails ( Raliegh and a Stumpy) but the GF Hi Fi 29r gets the nod every time

I've only frequented the shock forum (yesterday) in an effort to learn if the valve stem housing can be unscrewed and replaced in an older Fox RP2

still in the construction trades and a fly fishing guide here in Norcal for winter steel head and rainbows in Bristol Bay, Alaska

So where do I post the next four posts in order to ask my first Q officially?

New question here. Hi, and looking for help with hub logo

    Hi folks,
came here to find some info but before I can start a thread I need to make 5 posts. Here goes one :-) I've been riding bikes all my life, got my first decent bike in the late 70s and still ride it today. Used to commute, ran a small bike business (garage store) while in grad school. Got into tandems when I got tired waiting at top of hills and my wife got tired of expecting to find me just beyond the next turn. We have toured togther on singles and tandem. Tents are history for my wife, she now wants to goon canned tours... a tandem tour of Italy with Santana fell through...

Last weekend I trued up a wheel that I laced up quite a few years ago. It has a hub I can't identify. Is anyone able to identify the logo on this hub? It has a sealed bearing on the non-FW side at least. I attached 2 pics of the logo

    Best regards,
    Rich

    Hey guys!

Very happy to find THE forum about mtn bikes, so here is my presentation

1.) I'm from Quebec city, Canada
2.) I don't know wich type could describe me as a cyclist! I mostly ride in the summer, the other time of the year is spent doing other sports; I only do small trails for the moment.
3.) I have one bike for the moment (Not enough, I know), not related to mountain biking but this is the reason I came here (want to start). It's a giant cypress sx (see profile for mechs)
4.) Since my legs were born.
5.) This is my very first moutain bike forum yo !

Wanted to post a picture of my bike, but I can't... so yeah... hope to have a good time on this board!

    Help from northern San Francisco

Have been using MTBR for ages but have never posted and just walked into my garage and found out that my two beloved bikes (a year old Ellsworth Epiphany and 3 year old Specialized tarmac) were stolen. Would love any suggestions on trying to recover them. We have a great community of riders in norcal and I am a faithful rider of tamarancho and tahoe but I need 5 posts to be able to post this there. The Ellsworth is unique because of the red anodized parts and I have included a picture below. I am going to check Craigslist constantly but would love any feedback or ideas that you might have!

Decided to get serious into the mtb scene since I can't dirtbike anymore. I'm kinda new too the sport and used this site to gain info. and learn from people's experiences. Little did I know this hobby is hard on the wallet, I just bought a camelback hydration pack today and a GoPro 4 days ago Anyways it keeps me in shape, get to meet new people, and see new places, what more can you ask for. Hopefully hit some real trails soon down on SC, but pce everyone.

    Hello from newbie

Hello to all, I have joined this forum to get some info and and see what is going on in the bike world. To start I will say I am 51 years old living in North Florida and in good shape, not outstanding shape. I love the outdoors and try to get in as much of it as I can. I am here because I just bought my son a Jamis road bike for his 13th birthday. I have a old Schwinn MTB that I ride and have been thinking of getting a new bike to ride with my son. I am looking for help from the bike world on what would be the best bike for me. I am looking for something I can ride with my son on the road but also get into the woods and trails. I have been thinking about a 29er with a spare set of road wheels. What are your suggestions? As I said at the start HELLO to all and will be interested to see what you think. Jack

    from - AR/OK border

rider type - recreational, getting into more for fitness now

bikes - older (04) Spec. P-1, My son has a Spec. Rockhopper I ride at times, but I like the SS.

how long? gee, I can't remember a time I didn't have a bike - even in the Army overseas. but I'm new to riding for a reason other than just going to a trail with my son and some friends.

forums? jeep forums, samurai forums, canoe forums, BCUSA, and some work related ones

looking for? just to watch and learn some I guess. I'm just a basic mid-40's guy with some weight to lose and it's too hot now in the summer (110 yesterday) to do much more than ride my P1. I never get tired of the freedom of the bike and my son and I enjoy hitting some MTB trails and we ride our dirt bikes a lot too.

the 'clyde' success stories thread came up on a google search..led me here.
I rode a few miles yesterday when I got home from work - and got in a short workout after...
mostly from the motivation in that thread I mentioned.

I'm a Brit living in Munich, Germany

Been riding mtbs since my mid 30s, now very middle-aged. Wish I'd started much earlier

2 bikes--Cube AMS Pro 125, Cannondale Jekyll with Lefty (hardly used)

Do most of my riding in the German pre-Alps

At the beginning of the year, I was very middle-aged, very overweight, recently diagnosed with depression and could hardly climb out of bed.

Next month (August), I'll be mountain biking over the Alps covering 288 miles and climbing nearly 35,000 feet in 6 days. It's a personal challenge and for a good cause!

Hi everyone first post here, saying hi and my names Ben!

1.) Where you are from? Athens Greece not Georgia...
2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? Dont know yet, haven't been on a bike for 15 years, i'm 31 now and want to start riding again, maybe its my first mid life crisis, i've been listening to a lot of Megadeth recently too... coincidence?
3.) How many bikes you own? One rusty old Dyno Slammer, looks like a lego bike next to me now ,i'm 6'7/225lbs and looking for a big hardtail, this forum has been very helpful but i cant get most of the big custom bikes mentioned, in Greece, also couldnt afford one, the "mainstream" dealers here dont import anything in my size either and i can't order a TREK or Specialized bike (who make XXL sizes) from elsewhere in europe as they're not allowed to export retail...so i need some help, used frame from the states maybe???
4.) How long have you been riding? ...
5.) What forums do you frequent most? This is my first

    Thanx!

    New to the Forum

    Hello All,

I'm new to the forum and thought I would introduce myself. I live in Alaska and just go into Moutain biking, I'm not sure what my passion will be yet but i just enjoy riding.

I have a 2002 Cannondale SuperV 500, my first Full suspension bike and I'm still loving it.

    New to forum

I just started riding again about a month ago for general fitness and fun. I've been living in the Charlotte, NC area for about 9 years. I picked up a '99 Cannondale F1000 hardtail from a friend and it's great. I had my first good wreck yesterday and destroyed the air/oil damper in the Fatty SL headshok. I’ll be posting more soon looking for advice on a replacement strategy.

The Ellsworth is unique because of the red anodized parts and I have included a picture below. I am going to check Craigslist constantly but would love any feedback or ideas that you might have!
Sorry to hear that this happened to you. Try filing a police report and include pictures, serial numbers, and identifying marks if possible. I've heard of folks finding their stuff at pawn shops but not being able to get it back because they didn't provide identifying marks when filing the police report. Best of luck.

    Hi the name's Terry,

Started getting into mtb back in 1997, me and my bro would buy every mag that came out every month and read those things to pieces.
Finally got ourselves a pair of muni-mulas and shredded those into oblivion. Mine snapped after a failed attempt at a blunt on a park bench.
That was the only mtb i owned, but i'm getting back into the game now, feel like getting lost out there in the woods on a trusted steed again.

    Back Home

    Hello MTBR Members,
I'm not a new member to the site, but I've been away for a while. I'm back in the States now, and looking forward to riding here again. I have some 29er parts for sale, so if you need some wheels and other bits check out the other components area, thanks. I hope everyone is having a good summer and getting out for some good rides.

Have been looking at the forum and wanted to join.

1.) Currently live in San Diego

3.) How many bikes you own? 12. The first one which was just wrecked, was a Diamond Back Apex XT with the smoked paint job. Someone tied it on to a trailer incorrectly and my bike and my sons Specialized Hot Rock were run over! I recently got a Trek Rumblefish 2.

4.) How long have you been riding? Started riding at 5 in 1970 in the banked flood sewers of San Pedro! You do the math....

6.) Co-owner of Lost Spirit Distillery in Monterey CA. Makers of fine Rum and Whiskey!

7.) Have 2 black labs who feel that pulling me around on any bike is their full right and pitch a complete fit if they see me leave without them.

Got into tandems when I got tired waiting at top of hills and my wife got tired of expecting to find me just beyond the next turn. We have toured togther on singles and tandem. Tents are history for my wife, she now wants to goon canned tours... a tandem tour of Italy with Santana fell through...Best regards,

Forgot to mention my bike! The mountain bike I ride is a Canondale F700 hard tail from the mid 90s

    Checking in from Pittsburgh

Been lurking for a while now (even before I registered) and figured I'd introduce myself. I recently quit smoking and decided to get myself in shape (I just turned 40), but because of an injury to my heel a while back I can't jog.

Anyway, that's what led me to mountain biking. I read and read and searched, read some more, googled, read a bunch more, and googled again. Also made a couple trips to the LBS (Specialized dealer). After about a month of this, and a serious case of information overload, I ended up buying a Motobecane 700 HT.

Went on my third ride on it this evening. Like I told a couple of my buddies - wanna see how out of shape you are? Hope on a bike, find a .00025% grade and pedal it for about 100 feet. Holy cow!! (ya, I'm exaggerating, but not as much as I'd like!)

I'm pleased with the bike, although I think I may have gone one size too large. Based on the tons of information I found, I figured the 21" would be the best fit. But that top tube and my prized parts are awful cozy! OTOH, riding the bike and being in the saddle feels perfect and is very comfortable.

I'd post a pic, but I obviously don't have the post count yet (and besides, I imagine most of you know what the 700 HT looks like).

Sooooo, nice to meet all of ya!

    Greetings from Mexico

    Hey everyone.

My name is Mario. I'm from Queretaro, Mexico.
I started riding MTB since 1994, I've rode bikes since I was 5.
I'm basically a weekend warrior. No time to ride during the week
I ride trails, up and down, singletrack and everything in between.
I currently own 2 bikes: 1996 Rocky Mountain Hammer Race and 2009 Specialized FSR XC Comp.
I started riding again last year after an 8 year break and really happy about it.

    Spankin New

    Hey everybody:

    1.) From Austin Texas

2.) I am a weekend warrior I guess and I qualify as a 29er too. I try to ride at least once a week.

3.) I own one bike: 2010 Hardrock Sport Disc 29er

4.) I have been riding bikes since the mid 80s when I was into the bmx scene, GT Pro Series ahhh yeahhh. Those were the days. Riding around the local neighborhood trails with the other kids who had mongooses, blue maxes, skyways, etc. jumpin every curb on every driveway... Our neighborhood was really into it for some reason. But as far as mtb riding, I bought this cheap Roland at a pawn shop back in '96 that I rode around for a while. Then in 2005 I bought a Hardrock Sport and rode that thing off and on, pretty fun. Sold it because it was just sitting around and I was not using it. I had also broke one of my clavicles too (on the Roland actually....) and I guess I laid off riding for a while. But, just upgraded to the 29er so it's time to ride again.

5.) I don't really do the online forum thing much. In fact, I will probably make a few posts here and there and then might not ever do it again. I hope not though. Forums are cool. Lots of good info that can be gained.

If anyone wants to ride the greenbelt or any other local trails let me know. I recently discovered Slaughter Trail down south, pretty sweet.

Tried to post a link of my ride by did not meet the 10 post requirement...
