    Tin machine over from Ratrodbikes.com

hi my first experience with cycling was mountain biking , first real bike shop bike was a raliegh mojave 5.0 , big improvement from the wall mart bikes that I had rode , then went to a jamis dakar xc fullsuspension , and ended up loving the vintage mountain bikes such as the older gt 's , i have had many, and built and sold many mountain bikes , right now i have a 1988 fisher with the deore xt package , a haro extreme with a girvin front fork , a 1997 specialized ground control fullsuspension ,and a cannondale super v 2000 with the xtr package fox rear shox , and maybe a couple more stuck here and there , I like crosscountry riding with single track mixed in , I have been over at ratrodbikes.com for a couple of years , and I am the Tin machine , hope to get to know some of youuuuus .

Really enjoying the MTB community and the rides

1.) Where you are from? NY originally... but reside in Las Vegas for 15 years

2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? Weekend warrior, & single track/cross country type of guy. Like to take it all in and stop for scenic pictures. Not really interested in serious downhill or highly technical stuff.

3.) How many bikes you own? One... but would love to get more. Some bikes are works of art and I'd love to start collecting my favorites.

4.) How long have you been riding? Grew up riding road bikes in and around Manhattan (and Central Park back in the 70s and early 80s). However, have only recently (last couple of years) discovered a love for Mountain Biking.

5.) What forums do you frequent most? I like this site, but also visit Singletracks and have been following some very interesting bloggers (with a MTB bent) on Tumblr.

Long time lurker, first time poster

Well, I got into this forum in 2007 (4 years ago?!) But after getting my first bike, I stopped perusing the forums. But I have a newfound addiction for mountain biking and have been coming back here to learn some stuff and get inspired to get out and ride!

    Okay, now for the intro:
    1) I am from Russellville, Arkansas
    2) I consider myself a weekend warrior. I ride xc but would enjoy trying out All Mountain stuff.
    3) I only own 1 bike (Schwinn Rocket 88) but I really enjoy drooling over other bikes on the forum!
    4) I have been riding off-and-on for about three years, but have started riding weekly for about three months.
    5) I spend a lot of time on the singlespeed, commuter, and passion forums.

Kind of strange ... Like the post above, I signed up in 2007 then pretty much went on my merry way, so a (very) belated hi!

    1.) Where you are from?
    Western Oregon

2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself?
Recreational road cyclist. We (Dh and I) ride on the trails now and then, not enough to get past the beginner stage.

3.) How many bikes you own?
    4
    03 Specialized Allez Vita
    95 Spec. Rockhopper Ultra
    ? Miyata triplecross
    05 Santana Arriva

4.) How long have you been riding?
Been a casual rider since childhood. Started road cycling in 2003 - recreational (read slow). Take the mtn. bikes out now and then.

5.) What forums do you frequent most? (either here or on other sites)
I spend more time on blogs than forums but, I lurk on several bicycling and motorcycling forums. Bikeforums.net, Team Estrogen.

We've been spending a little more time on trails, and figure it's about time to upgrade the mtn bikes. Came here looking for trail information and rediscovered the forums.

Hello! I'm 23. I came across this forum while looking for advice on how to ride, where ride and what type of bike I should buy.

    1.) Where you are from?
San Francisco but now live in p-TOWN AKA Pacifica, CA

2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself?
    Beginner

3.) How many bikes you own?
1 late 1990's, "biblical diabolical beast,"and insanely fast Giant Iguana...plan to upgrade in the near future.

4.) How long have you been riding?
    A few days

5.) What forums do you frequent most?
    Expertfootball.com

I learned to ride a bike without training wheels when I was 6 and rode until I was 10. When I was 10 I was racing on the side walk with my friend and lost control of my bike and ended up crashing into my uncles car. I left a huge dent on his car and the worse part is that I slammed my skin flute and ball sack on the bikes frame when I crashed. Neighbors and family came rushing to see if I was ok and that's when my older cousin who saw everything picked me up and pulled my pants down to see if anything was missing. My package had huge nasty bruise on the right side that ran down to my sack and when I went to take a leak it felt like razor blades where coming out my urethra. That day I vowed to never ride a bike. Thankfully my unit is fully functional but it slightly bends to the right when ready for action because of this accident. No joke.

A few days ago I pulled out my dads old monster Giant Iguana bike from the garage and took it for a spin. I overcame my fear of bike riding mainly because I realized how unfit I've become and want to get into shape again for soccer. I rode on the Mori Point trails in p-town and had a blast so I plan on making this a hobby. I want to learn as much as possible and take it one step at a time.

    Introduction from Phoenix

Hello! Chuck from Phoenix Started riding a bit last year with a 2010 Trek Wahoo...mainly on the streets. I just recently upgraded to the 2012 Trek Cobia. I love the upgrade! Shifting is so smooth, so is the ride!! I am trying to build my endurance now to tackle some of the trails at the nearby Dream Draw Phoenix Mountain Preserve Park. I wanted to find a forum to learn tips for newbies, learn about places to ride, bike maintenance, etc.

I look forward to interacting with you all!

    So, I'm Tom
I'm native to AZ though I spent a few years recently in the sticks of NE Indiana.
Kind of a beginner...just been on about a 30 year layoff. OK, definitely a beginner again.
2 bikes, Diamondbacks- see my sig. Eyeing a 3rd..."for my son"...
I visit this site, F150 Online, and moderate at the End Times Round Table.

I was a hard core BMX'er in the good old days when it was pure. Started in 1976 as a rag-tag neighborhood team. Pretty much ruled the rankings in my age group here in Phoenix with 1 other kid- he on the east side, me on the west. PXA was my home track.

Loving the mountain bike though. I'm not in the best of shape yet, but I am getting there. Looking at a 3rd bike now so I can always ride with my 2 boys- my pals- and start hitting some trails.

    Hey all,
I'm from Southern Indiana. I've been riding Kona mountainbikes and Trek road bikes since college, and have recently been shopping around for my first 29er build. My preferred rides are woodsy singletracks with a mix of climbs, streams, and quick switchbacks. I've loved 29ers when I've had a chance to try them, so I'm probably going to build one this winter.

What's up! My name's John. I'm from Brooklyn, NY, and ride about every type of bike possible. I'm currently on a road racing/cyclocross kick, but I've raced track and mountain bikes as well. I own 7 bikes at the moment, although one needs to go. Anyone want a Dean 29er? Perhaps I'll try my hand at the classifieds here.

In any case, great to be a part of the community!

    Hi Guys,

I am Vince and I'm 56 and a retired commercial diver and engineer and now part time bike mechanic, but just for fun.

Last year I built a road bike on a Lynskey Sportive Ti frame with a full Dura Ace group and my Buddy and I built the wheels at the shop we work at which was a cool job.

He also got me into riding a 29'er and I ended up with a Giant XTC1 hardtail, which is great fun. It's like driving a Humvee.

I really enjoy both types of riding. I also really enjoy working in the bike shop and helping people out when they are buying a new bike or when they have a problem with their existing bike.

    Regards, Vince

    Smile Hello from El Paso

1.) Where you are from? (as specific as you care to share)
2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? (ex: beginner, weekend warrior, all mtn/trail rider, XC racer, downhiller, singlespeeder, 29er rider, etc...)
3.) How many bikes you own?
4.) How long have you been riding?
5.) What forums do you frequent most? (either here or on other sites)

    1. Hello my name is Jordan I'm from El Paso, Texas.
    2. I am definitely a beginner. I'm hoping to begin commuting around town soon, I just bought an older model Specialized Hard Rock at a garage sale for 10 dollars. Hoping to make it a project bike.
    3. Never owned a serious bike , just throw away's from wal-mart.
    4. I've rode bikes since I was young, but just beginning to make a serious commitment to it.

1.) Living in San Piero a Grado, Italy
2.) no specific type, training for IronBike
    3.) 1
4.) That depends. I've always had a bike since I can remember, but I've only started training in the last two weeks.
    5.) NC4x4.com, ChargerForum.com and Reddit.com(not a forum, but better).

I hadn't ridden a bike in a while, when we moved to Italy. While waiting for our car to arrive, I stopped by a sporting goods store in Livorno and bought a previous year model Trek 4400. Since then I've been hooked. Recently I've started researching IronBike and hope to compete in 2012.

I have a billion questions and will most likely be hanging out in the endurance section.

    Peace.

Coming over to the dark (dirty) side

    Long time roadie...first time caller.

Just bought my first Mountain Bike after years of road only riding. Planning on hitting the trails with some roadie friends who ride the trails as well.

My first ride is a second hand Iron Horse Warrior Pro. A little heavy I'm told....and WAAAAY heavier than my 17lb roadbike....but wicked cool all the same.

Psyched to try this whole thing out! I've been playing around solo on local fireroads and dirt roads...not much singletrack around here...at least not that I know of. I'm really looking forward to learning the skills!

1.) Where you are from? Southeastern Connecticut
2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? Experienced Road Cyclist - Total Mnt Bike newbie
    3.) How many bikes you own? 2 - 1 road/1 MB
4.) How long have you been riding? Road - 12 years consistantly. MB...just starting.
5.) What forums do you frequent most? Roadbike Review...haven;t posted much lately though.

    Where you are from?
    Finger Lakes region of NYS

What kind of rider do you consider yourself?
Beginner and a timid one at that

    How many bikes you own?
Two. One road bike and one hardtail.

How long have you been riding?
Haven't ridden since I was a wee lass. Just started up again this past spring. My intention at first was to just do road riding, but I got invited to go mountain biking with some friends one weekend...and then another and then another. Long story short, 4 months later I bought my first mountain bike

What forums do you frequent most?
I'm so new to this that I'm exploring everything and trying to learn everything.

Hello MTBR Jim Scales and I am in beautiful SE Kansas where we more old coal pits from surface mining than you shake a stick at...which is very nice for riding!
Been riding for a while but never had a passion for it until this year, when I chnaged jobs and have more time for riding
I am now a die hard trail rider and with the old strip pits we have around here, that can be challenging as all get out
    I have 2 bikes, 1- an old beater, 2 Trek 2012 Wahoo

    Newbie from UK

Well, I've been dropping by here for a few months trying to figure out the world of MTB which has strangely drawn me in. So I though I'd check in and say hello.

It all started when I needed to teach my youngster to ride, so I dusted off my old Rockhopper and headed off to our local woods in Cheshire, UK. I've now ridden all the family friendly trails but my attention is always being drawn to those tight gnarly looking trails that shoot off through the woods.

I'm no stranger to riding rough tracks, steep slopes with loose surfaces and fast gravel fireroads but for the last 10 years its all been on motorised steeds. I can handle an Enduro (moto)bike to a reasonable standard but lately I seem to have lost the moto mojo..

So - I've now sold the motorbike and now have funds to spend on a something special to replace my old '04 Rockhopper.

    Anyway, evening' all.

    Paul

Hello all Jack here from Caledon Ontario, I have been away from Mountain bikes for 5 years now due to a major heart attack. I started ridding back in 1990 during the days of rigid frames and forks. I have a niner single speed, looking to add a full suspension A M soon. Great site hope to make some good friends

Hi there, I'm Liz from Anchorage, AK. I use my one Gary Fisher hardtail mountain bike for riding on single track and double track dirt trails, commuting, running errands and just about everything else! I've been riding it steadily for about two years now, and am seriously considering getting a snow bike to keep it company this winter.

    Hey,

New guy here...never did any mountain biking before but I figure this is the time to learn and buy a bike so I can start once the weather starts to warm up. Of course, now I'm going to have this new toy sitting in my basement that I can't use for the next 6 months or so which should be plenty frustrating but I'm still looking forward to it.

Will probably just be lurking until the spring, learning as much as I can from reading but I will probably be an avid poster once I get going.

    Hello all. Name's Jeremy.
    From Madison WI.
Beginner to MTB pretty much, but grew up loving/riding bikes in general. Did a little BMX dirt jumping in HS.
I've got a few different kinds of bikes, but my MTB is a cobbled together thing that's finally getting respectable after I get the fork I'm about to buy. It's an OK aluminum frame with a mix of Deore LX, XTR, Truvativ cranks, and soon to be Marzocchi DJ2 fork.
I'll return to put up a picture in a couple weeks after I get my new fork. I don't have any pics as of now.

Hello all. My name is Jared. I am currently residing in the Anchorage, Alaska area. Like most of you, I have been riding since I was a kid, but I didn't really get introduced to any real trail riding until around 2001. What can I say, I grew up in rural Missouri in the 90's, not exactly the Mecca of Mountain Biking. Currently I am focused on nuturing my wife and three boys along in the love of riding. I have never owned a bike nearly as nice as I would like, but I'm getting there. currently I ride a pretty cheap Novara 29er hard-tail, but I have a blast. I entered a few small XC races up here in Alaska this year and had a great time. I am looking to move into the FS 29er market. At 5'11" and 165 lbs I know I dont "need" a 29er, but I am pretty well sold on the big wheels. I have three bikes in mind, but I am open to suggestions; Niner W.F.O 9, Intenser Tracer 29, or Lenz Lunchbox. The later two being made in the USA makes them all the more appealing. I'd be interested to hear what suggestions are out there. I have looked at several bikes, but most of my research has been online. I'd love to get some more time in the saddle.

Smile Got my new bike ...

After doing a bunch of research I settled on a 2011 Cannondale Scalpel 2. It's proving interesting to get used to but I'm getting back into racing and decided to head more for light weight than long travel (like I'm used to).

It's without a doubt the best climbing bike I've ever ridden and the SRAM 2x10 is probably the best idea in MTB innovation since they started making circular wheels, in my opinion.

    :-)

Night riding is awesome - I do a ton of it during winter. Nothing like going for a thrash in the dark although I admit I take remove the chances of crashing by using a helmet light bright enough to assist a 747 to land ...

Stuck in Orlando. Back into riding for about a month now, started with an old guy's bike (Specialized Crossroads) then on to a Sirrus and now looking for something to do urban assaults and trail riding with.

    Y'oh, you pedal peeps!

Just a hello from the Great Pacific Northwest! Westside PDX to be exact.

Been riding for a long time, did the 1st Cycle Oregon Double Century on a MTB... yes, some years go. Traded in the MTB for a 3 wheel recumbent 5 years ago. Enjoy a lot of local sububrian and rural routes and the bounty of trails in the region. So far, the trails of Coeur d' Alene impress me the most.

I really enjoy night rides and find myself with yet another hobby... custom lighting solutions for seeing and being seen on bicycles. I find this to be a technical challenge as well as a psych challenge. I find it interesting how fixated many cyclists are to lighting solutions. Probably an innate survival instinct

I am an active member on the BentriderOnline forum as LayZeeD and frequent several flashlight forums and various bike forums. Although I've received many emails from MTBR, I never realized there was a very active forum here. I hope to learn and hopefully give back from the good peeps of this forum as well.

    Keep Ridin'

    Greeting!

Hi, I have been living and trail riding in Park City UT since the summer of 1987. Long before front suspension, helmets, SPD's and the Mountain Trails Foundation! Most of us ski bums rode $400 Specialized "Rock Hoppers" from Brock & Charlies store White Pine on Main Street. Stumpjumpers and Cannondales were for the Elite!

Riding a new Ibis Mojo HD this season as I could not wait any longer for the Turner RFX! Still trying to dial it in for climbing semi steep rocky single track. The RP23 just feels like S***. Trying a friends XFusion this week.

Hello from S Tx. I"ve been lurking for a while, pulling off info as needed and decided to join. I've been riding for about 3 or so years now on my Marin Hawk Hill. I've enjoyed riding it but decided I wanted another bike so, I checked around and my local Sun & Ski had the Hawk Hill on sale for what I think was a good price so I bought it. It's being delivered and setup on Tuesday.
    Happy Trails....

Old newbie checking in from Los Angeles. I used to have an account here under Endomaster, real name is Agustin, but I guess it became inactive after some time. I'm 39, used to ride the Fullerton Loop in Fullerton, CA regularly as well as some of the south OC trails every once in a while. In any case, I'm back, along with a few more pounds. I rode a Yeti 575 which I am currently tearing down to relube all joints and replace things like cabling and chain.

New to forum -- looking for LEFT GR2 Ergon grip bar end

    Hey Everybody,

I over-tightened the bolt on the bar end to my GR-2 Ergon grip -- the left grip. I broke off the bold inside and can't get it out. Does anyone have a spare left bar end they're interested in selling/mailing me (possibly because you broke the right one)?

And alright, I just started mountain biking this spring. As a hello:

    1.) Where you are from?
    Oakland, California!

2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? (ex: beginner, weekend warrior, all mtn/trail rider, XC racer, downhiller, singlespeeder, 29er rider, etc...)

Bike commuter, cycle-tourist, ultra-light bike packer, cross-country rider. Cyclocross newbie. Also, a bad-ass woman rider -- hip hip!

3.) How many bikes you own?
Eight and a half. Touring bike, commuter bike, mountain bike, fast bike, three tandems, tall bike, unicycle.

4.) How long have you been riding?
Commuting 6 years, became a bike nut 3 years ago.

5.) What forums do you frequent most? (either here or on other sites)
None -- completely new to this internet forum thing.

1.) Where you are from? Olathe, KS. Suburb of KC

2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? Beginner... definitely. Just trying to find a niche.

3.) How many bikes you own? Uno. I have a 2012 Trek 3500

4.) How long have you been riding? Just about a month now. Its tough to get time on the trails as I have a 16 month old boy who requires dad's attention quite a bit. Love the guy though!

5.) What forums do you frequent most? Love this site... especially since I have the tapatalk app on my EVO... able to view easily from anywhere. I also frequent TundraSolutions.com. I am a Toyota Tundra owner and proud of it.

Since my post count is 0 I cannot post photos yet. I will get some up once I get some posts in.

Looking forward to the wealth of info on here and to possibly meeting up with some local riders for some group rides.

whats up guys, new member but have lurked for a little while.

Im currently living in CT. i have a specialized enduro, i got it so i could have kind of a "do it all bike" since i used to only ride downhill but because of where i live it got to expensive to only ride downhill since all the mountains are a few hours away. Ive been riding for a few years now, i try to get out there daily. Biking has basically took over my life haha, between riding and also owning Tbbikeracks.com.

    Hi folks,
For the past fifteen years I've been riding the only bike I ever had: a 1985 Mongoose ATB.
Just a couple months ago I moved waaaay up in the world with a much newer bike: a 1997 GT LTS-1.
    Wow, what a difference!

Hi, I am Pete and I am from Southeastern Pennsylvania I don't really care to ride on the street with all the cars but I enjoy riding our railroad trails and dirt roads. We have quite a few within a nice day trip. I got away from it for a while but just getting back since getting the tandem.

I like to ride rail trails and dirt roads
I have a late 90s Gary Fisher Montare and just got a GT Quatrefoil Tandem
Been riding off and on since before the turn of the century...
This is the only bike forum I am on and I joined because I saw other people with Quatrefoils and off road tandems. I mostly frequent photography forums and host my own railroader's community forum.

[IMG]Hi, I am new to the forum and joined because I saw a lot of tandems on here. I just picked an older GT Quatrefoil and we have been riding around campgrounds and venturing out on some trails. I have been riding but my GF is just getting back into it.

Well... It won't let me post the photo... I will put it up after I have ten posts.
    Pete

    Hello from the Windy City!

1.) Grew up in Chicago, IL and New York City, NY. Currently live in Round Lake Beach, IL which is about 45 min north of Chicago.
2.) I would consider myself a beginning rider when it comes to the more technical aspects of bike riding. Would like to try some all-mountain, XC and downhill. Currently working on a singlespeed conversion for everyday riding.
3.) A 93' Schwinn Crosscut and my older BMX bike. A Royce Union or something of that sort lol.
4.) I learned to ride I guess around the same age everyone else does. But this is the first year that I have made riding a daily routine
5.) It would be this one, but decided to just now create an account lol

Look forward to speaking with all the fellow bikers and learning a lot along the way!

    Hello from Nooo zeelund

I am a 63 year old hard out cyclist that wont give up.

Started competitive road cycling in 1966 but changed back to running coz the time I had to spend training on the bike was ridiculous.

Got into touring and mad dog commuting about five years ago. Started with a Scott clunker then bought a second hand Zaskar Pro (2005 model) . The best, and most used, bit of machinery I have ever owned.

Two days ago some bum stole it so now I am trying to figure out what to do.

Not sure about pimped up blue carbon, might buy a second hand (black) expert and fit XT componentry.

Started out riding bmx (poorly) when I was in my teens. Started doing a lot more urban street riding on the bmx which led to dirt trails and steep drops. After bending handlebars, crank arms, snapping cranks and bending the complete hell out of some wheels I finally bought a F/S bike. Rode an Ironhorse MKIII comp for about a year before it was stolen . Now I'm itching to get back at it. Been about a year!

Hi every body I live in Lansing Michigan
its has been on and off but I just started riding so at this point I dont have a preference so I'll say I am a beginner
I own two bikes right now and I use them to commute to work and some free riding on paved surfaces in the city
My neighbor moved and he left his old Huffy to me in 2006 and I have been riding it since then on summer days, I got my second bike early spring of 2011, And hopefully I get to built one for next year
I am also a member (Just signed today) in Road Bikes Review forums and I often visit forums that have to do with computer trouble shouting as I often get in trouble running different software in my computers specifically Linux programs.
I really hope to learn from this forum as well as making good friends

New guy from SLO, CA area here, figured I'd check in. I ride a white Kona Stinky 6 and climb everything I go down, and I really want to build up a SS 29er. Yeti 575's are looking really good too. I beat around town on an Alpinestars Cro-Mega DX, and have a couple of road bikes for longer hauls & commuting. I like trailwork and beer, and I work on European cars to pay for bikes & beer. Howdy!

    Needing help posting an ad

Alright, Im fairly new on the forum thread, but have been lurking around at the ads and discussions about the new Ibis 29er (which i am hoping to get a great deal on)

    The name is Brian
ride all around Lake Tahoe for the last 10 years, mostly on a 06 Specialized enduro (for sale by the way).

I've just made my 3rd attempt to post a classified at on MTBR and every time after i hit submit and wait for something to download, NOTHING. It brings me back to the origional post an ad page. What am i doing wrong?

I HAVE emailed the classified section of MTBR with no replys. Its starting to get a bit annoying having to resubmit all the descriptions of my bike. Whats up here? How do I get this done?

Either way, I have an XL Enduro for sale that rips. $800.

AND, i've just tried to upload a picture to this message and the upload failed. Have no idea why this wont work.

    Country Komodo

Hello everyone, Jeff here. And this is my first time joining & posting on any forum. I currently reside in Bandera TX the hub of the vast Texas "hill country" region. I favor the trails surrounding the Bandera Disc Golf Course, here in town as the trail head is less than half a block from my back porch, and hosts over a dozen dry creek and riverbed crossings, massive thousand year old drought felled cypress trees that have created giant holes in the dry dirt where their enormous root systems used to be. This system is largely incomplete and un ride-able, due to flood damage/debris and overgrowth of native and imported plant life. But with a chain saw some shovels and rakes a few driven to ride people and all the awesome ramp making materials that can be obtained from the clean up process alone, it is my goal to turn this wasted land into a mind blowing ride on the river for persons of all ages and skill levels.

    THANK YOU
    for reading Jeff S.

    Introduction

    Hello All,
Name is Sean and I've been lurking here for awhile decided it was time to join.
I'm from Marietta Ga and have been riding Mtn bikes since 1998 when I purchased a Schwinn Mesa and got hooked.
Currently riding a Cannondale Flash 1 29er XL frame and I love it (except for one little problem, but more on that in another post.)
Have mainly used mtbr for the reviews but have enjoyed reading the forum posts and hopefully get some tips, advice and help from other members.

    Greetings MTBR
I live in Grand Rapids, MI. This is my second summer riding consistently. My first bike was a very inexpensive Diamondback Response that someone dumped way too much money into on upgrades. That bike was a pig, but it was bulletproof.
The next bike was a Giant NRS which I bought this spring. I rode that all summer putting around 350 miles of trail on it. I was getting real comfortable and pushing my self as hard as I could, but 29ers kept passing me! So, I sold it and got my 2011 Flash 2! After only 2 rides, I. Am. Hooked!
I have used MTBR Quite a few times for info on components and products.

Hello my name is Max.Reside in So Cal, Moreno valley.
Have approx 23yrs on bicycles, last 7 yrs on road bikes with double century's as favorite
Got tired of the road rage from the cagers, stopped riding, got FAT and now going to start riding MB on the trails.
Deciding on Trek Marlin or Mamba, still reading the pro's and con's, great forum to educate one self.
Love to ride my 911 Carrera and VTX 1800 Honda, and soon my new MB.

Well S... that did not take long after all, just bought a Trek X-Caliber 23", replaced the stem for a bit more upright swing, and bought flat pedals by odesey jc/pc to fit my size 15, love their wide platform and size.Installed my old mavic PC from my roadbike and 2 new bottle cages.

Now going out for a early evening spin, and getting up in the AM for a 7AM LONG spin, like a little kid, can't wait to ride it.

My LBS is just great, gave me a killer deal, and helped me throughout as usual, way to go RC you rock.

    Hello

    Hi, my name is David.

    1.) I am from Georgia.
    2.) I am a beginner, ridding a 29'er.
3.) I currently own 1 bike, a 2012 Trek Mamba G2. My son has a Specialized FSR. That's what I officially started on.
4.) I have only been riding a few weeks (~6).
5.) This is the only bike forum I frequent. I am a member at several music and motorcycle forums. I am a musician and ex bike racer.

I am loving riding! I love riding my motorcycles (all trail and race bikes). I'm not fast anymore, but being outside and in the woods is a great way to get rid of the daily stress

I am 56 years old and had/have polio. I am very fortunate in that it hasn't bothered me like many others. I don't have to wear braces or special shoes etc... I just have to be smart and know my limitations. Otherwise I can do pretty much what I want.

In addition to bikes, I like kayaking, music, tennis, motorcycles, being with my family.

Hopefully I'll have some photos up soon.

    David

    newbie - needs quick advice

    Hi to all
This is my very first post! I'm from Malta and interested mostly in XC riding. I want to buy a new MTB, and i'm looking at hardtails. I'm undecided between these two:

2011 Cannondale Trail SL3 and GT Zaskar Comp 2011

Assuming that i can get these bikes for roughly the same price, which would you go for?

Any advice would be great. There are some great offers on the Zaskar, so I don't want to take too much time.

    Thank you

1.) Where you are from? I grew up in the Moco Maryland but nowadays I hop up and down the Baltimore and DC through out the week.
2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself?
Well when I was a kid I was dirt jumping as if I was extending my life span. Around 18 yrs old I moved out and started riding a dumpster beater around specifically for transportation. Then I started putting together beater fixies. I have a serious affinity for the outdoors so I guess it just makes sense that I'm trying to get into mountain biking now.
3.) How many bikes you own?
Right now 1, I've been through about 4 recently.
4.) How long have you been riding?
Lets say got back into it about 6 years ago.
5.) What forums do you frequent most?
Mostly unrelated to biking: angryblacklady, Yomyomf, sherdog, shakesville

I'm a bjj/kickboxing/mma geek. I've been doing marital arts since I could walk. I've been called and food and beer snob by many. I'm in love with Mumford and Sons and I also help run the Secular Student Alliance(the atheist club) at UMBC. I'm really open with the things I do so if you have a question, ask away!

1.) Where you are from? Born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA (south hills), currently living in Pittsburgh PA (north hills), spent 6 years on west coast (Seattle and San Jose)

2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? 34 year old mom of 4 looking to get into biking with the family for fun and exercise

3.) How many bikes you own? Personally, zero, at the moment - but have been zipping up and down the street some on a 24" mountain bike that I am just a hair too tall for - my son has 2, long story

4.) How long have you been riding? Well I learned to ride when I was 5 (on a Huffy sweet thunder 2!) but have not owned a bike in a good 10 years - rode all over the place in college and I miss my college bike!!! (Which was a Nishiki, which I assumed was really good, because it wasn't a Huffy LOL - but I think I might be totally wrong about that. I got it for free and it served me well)

5.) What forums do you frequent most? mommy boards that likely aren't of much interest to most here :-)

Add anything else you care to share.

I just ordered a trek 3500 which I know is the entry level mtb and nothing to write home about, but I figure I can tool around on it for a few years and figure out my needs better. Should be ready this weekend so my son and I can ride in the cemetery across the street and I can't wait. Hoping next summer to get the whole family out in some capacity - baby will be big enough for a baby seat, husband needs a bike, and trying to snag a couple trail a bikes for my girls who are 3 (twins). Basically looking to do rails to trails kind of stuff with the fam, with some wooded trail riding alone or with my son(s). Nothing hard core! But I see there's a biking with kids forum here which I hope will be helpful and I hope to get some tips on souping up the bike I am getting and in a few years settling on the right bike.

I'm a history dork, old house fanatic, and fountain of useless trivia.

Its great you're getting your family into it. My good friend's mom used to enter in BMX races and ride on super long trails with him when he was in high school. One of the coolest parent-offspring stories I've heard.

1.) Where you are from? Lewisville, TX
2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? beginner
3.) How many bikes you own? I own 1.
4.) How long have you been riding? Not counting when I was a kid.... 3 weeks
5.) What forums do you frequent most? this is the only real forum I know other than DORBA.

    My name is Jimmy.
I recently purchased my 2011 Cannondale Trail SL 3. I had a hard time investing this much money in a "bicycle" but after some persuading from my friends and gotten a chance to ride on different MTB I had no problem going from a 400 mtb to a 800+. I actually wanted to buy something MORE expensive, but i figured my first bike, this will do. I also picked up a Bell Volt Helmet.

I had so much fun riding on my first trail in Corinth that my girlfriend wanted one as well after hearing my story... well i figured I'd purchase her a 2011 Cannondale Trail 5, for our anni, after getting her to test ride different bikes and get measured up for one.

All in all, I have enjoyed riding with the time I've had. I've never considered myself to be an out-doorsy type person, but now, I hate getting stuck inside.

Funny how majority of the people I talk to at work (I work at a Motorcycle apperal store called Moto Liberty) mountain bike lol don't know if its just a coincidence... :P

I would post a picture but I can't yet lol.

I don't know that I see me getting into BMX races but who knows, stranger things have happened LOL. I just think it will be fun to all get out.

I am having doubts about the bike I ordered and thinking I will call the bike store and see if I can change my mind. The guy originally was steering me towards comfort bikes which just seemed clunky and old person to me - they don't look good for hills - but now looking through the trek catolog I see he also pointed out the 7100. My dad's friend has a 7200 and does about the style riding I am planning on and trek doesn't seem to make that bike any more, but I wonder if the 7100 should have been given more thought.

3.) How many bikes you own? 3. Trek 4500, Trek 1200, Schwinn Varsity SS
4.) How long have you been riding? off and on for about 7 years

I've been mountain biking off and on for about 7 years, and road biking for about 6. With two small kids at home, I don't get to the MTB trails much. But as they get older, I'm getting out more. My 10 year old is riding a Specialized Hardrock now, and when he gets more comfortable with it, he'll be hitting the trails with me. There are some great trails in my area that were built and maintained by GORC. The trails are awesome, I just need to get on them more.

Guess I'll give it a shot...

Hi, my name's David Chaveca, just call me David. I'm a 19 years old graphic designer finishing his major in college this year and I got the passion two years ago.

I live and was born in Montreal, Quebec and often go to Ocean City, MD during the summer and to Lake Champlain for fishing during weekends.

I'll say I'm a good rider, but only 2 years of MTB riding got me pretty good (I learn quick) and I never crashed, so that's a plus. I like aggressive trails, bombing down and night riding in the city. I know to appreciate the sound of nature and the pain of climbing a freeride bike uphill to be able to show off the roadies and enjoy every second of the descent. I hate trail nazis who block trails with rocks and sticks, as much as the one who rides like hipsters and douch e and don't respect driving law and safety rules.

Since I started college, I find myself commuting every day, all year long and I know own 6 (?) bikes, a Iron Horse freeride, custom FS trail, custom FS winter, rigid steel summer, GT custom build SS and GT rigid commuter. I got my brother a GT XCR 3000 and a GT Timberline hardtail for it's birthday this summer.

I actually speak French as first language, English as second and slowly learning German, Italian and Spanish. I have a job as a graphic designer and then spend a lot of time on computers, so you'll see me online quite often. Then all my free time is about riding, fishing and wrenching.

I'm looking into web development, photographs, design, photoshops, reproductions/restorations, decals and graphic identity creation.

If you are looking for custom bike stickers/decals, reproductions for restoration build, web designs and image correction, I'm the guy to set you up without BS. And most affordable.

And if you ever want a ride buddy in the Montreal area, hit me up and I'll show you the place. Free access to the mountain on my island, 10 minutes ride to the trailhead from home, and nice trails for XC to DH.

And got to tell you one last thing. I'm a man on a budget, so don't be surprised to see lot of custom fitting in my builds

    David

    Hi, I'm Brandon
    1.Gardner, KS
    2. Beginner, Intermediate. I got serious about riding last year when I started college.
    3. I own two bikes. An old pacific cycle mountain bike from 2001 and has held up to the wear and tears of daily commute. A Schwinn SideWinder 2011 from Wal-Mart. I haven't had any problems with it yet and I have put about 40 miles on it so far. I know there is a huge movement against department store bike because they are cheaply made. I done lots of research on this bike. I have had to put a little work into it by fine tuning the gears and brakes. I spent just $150 dollars and that is it.
    4. I have been riding since I was young but have gotten serious about it within the past year.

    New from Leadville, CO

I bought my first mountain bike, 21 years ago from Montgomery Wards and rode it into the ground. Then a hard tail Stumpjumper, a Raleigh hard tail, a Specialized Enduro and now a hard tail Iron Horse. I live and ride in Leadville, Colorado and have ridden all over the front range from Fort Collins to Littleton.

I'm always looking for others in the area to ride with. I know a lot of good trails and jeep roads in the Leadville area.

Notable trails ridden: loved Zippity in Fruita, puked on Mt. Falcon outside of Golden, crashed and burned on Heil's Ranch outside of Longmont, learned to finesse on Purcupine Ridge outside of Moab and learned to stay away from level 9 jeep trails on the way up to Holy Cross City outside of Leadville (freaking staircase for the Jolly Green Giant).

    Love the sport.

    hello....

Hi, I'll try not to write a novel but here I go: I'm from Port Angeles, Wa. and I've been riding off and on for a little over three years now. I'm also learning to ride a dirt bike (kx100) so I switch back and forth between the two. I love riding trails that are a mix of down hill with some smooth sweeping sections mixed with technical sections that aren't crazy steep. (not sure what you would call that!) I've been getting better with each ride and have been gradually trying harder and harder trails. I own a Jamis Dakar, it's a small mens bike (I'm a short girl so it works perfect) I have fox talas RLC forks, juicy brakes, float r shock and xt drive train. I have never used a forum before, only read them from time to time for reviews and such. I wanted to start using this forum because I'm passionate about riding and was hoping to maybe meet some other girls who like to ride. I ride mostly with my husband which is fun, he's an amazing rider, but it would be nice to find a girl I can go riding with. I love night rides and having a cold Blue Moon after my rides. See ya on the trails!!

    Hi from Richmond, Virginia

Hi everyone - I've been getting back into mountain biking after a long time and purchased a 2012 Trek Mamba 29er about a month ago. Before that, I rode a Trek 850 fully rigid ride which I still own. I guess I still consider myself a beginner and enjoy riding the trails for the great views, exercise, hang out with friends, and the challenge. I started riding in 1995 and rode for about 3 years but then didn't ride much for the next 10 or 11 years. I've been following the Beginners Corner, GPS & Bike computer, and Virginia forums for a little while now gaining some good ideas from those that have been riding a while. Thanks mtbr for putting this resource together!

    Noob from Tn.

    I forgot the questions now.
I've been into MTB XC since 1995. I occasionally fall away for a few years then come back with a vengance. Currently getting back on the bike after three year hiatus.
I ride a GT i-Drive which is rapidly becoming outdated as I bought it in 2001 and it has remained original to this time.
In my early days I did BMX, Downhill and XC. Now I keep my wheels on the ground asI dream of doing some 100 milers hence the name reference to a pipe dream.

Howdy neighbors, just another newbie, my name is Pounder
    I live in coastal Florida.
I do mostly trail rides, hash rides and a weekly road ride with the gang.
I own 5 bikes, rigids, hardtails and full suspensions but need to thin the herd out.
Been riding since 1993 when I purchased my Trek 9200 f/s after dropping out of college (still have it).
I rarely participate in social media but this is more of an in-depth knowledge bank, good for dreaming up the next bike to build and unwinding after the kids are in bed.

Hi. Name's Sam. Getting back to serious riding just this year. Used to ride a little about 10 years ago but 2 military deployments that kept me away for 2 summers kind of got me out of the loop. Started riding mostly flat (rail trail) stuff last year and then got back into xc this summer. Plan to race in the WVMBA series next year.

Watters Smith- most well maintained, fast

    Finally got to doing this!

    Hi all!

My name is Mike, and I'm a noob from Kalamazoo, Mi. Been riding for years - started with BMX, then motocross, then on to road biking then full circle back to mountain biking. I guess I would call myself an extremely avid weekend warrior since my job takes me all over three states! not much time to ride during the week. I prefer mostly trail and XC...but will ride anything anymore if my wife isn't watching! I currently own two mountain bikes - my '96 Schwinn Full Suspension and my '98 Homegrown Hardtail....love to get something newer but love the older bikes and how they feel! Thanks for letting me be a part of the community, and look forward to meeting more of you - possibly on the trails!

With the change in the posting requirements, we've created this thread here for newbies to introduce yourself.

Hopefully this will unite all the "hello there" or "checking in" threads currently popping up here in the general forum.

    Please respond with:

1.) Where you are from? (Lived in Santa Monica, CA for 17 years, suddenly moved to Winslow, AZ)
2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? (I've been riding since 1999, Malibu Canyon, San Gebriel Mtn, Covina Hills, San Dimas... Then just pick up MTBing again in Winslow, 15-20 miles daily road to trail ride to the Clear Creek Park. Little rocky, but at least tons fun as I'm a loner.
3.) How many bikes you own? (Jamis Durango 3, 2010)

4.) How long have you been riding? ( on & off since 1999)

5.) looking for trail riding partner in Winslow, anyone interest to rise along to the clear creek trails, drop a PM! Thx

    Hi community!

I'm Miguel, from Braga, a small town in the north of Portugal.
I'm a recreational rider (aren't we all), getting back to MTB for fitness reasons. The kind of riding I like to do is to simple go out and have fun in the surroundings of Braga. The trails are awesome, with both up and down hill fire roads, gnarly singletracks, old roman style rockpaved roads and rock gardens... I think people now call this "all mountain"...
I presently own 2 bikes. A 2005 P2 and a 2010 Enduro Comp, both from Specialized. The latter was a great closeout deal.
I started riding back in 1994, but stopped 5 years ago. I was getting very "large", so returned to the sport. The good deal I got on the bike helped decision to return...

Hope to positively contribute to this forum.

    Regards to all!

    Miguel

    Hey all.

    1. I've lived in so many places, I can't call any of them "home." I'm in Arkansas for now, though.
    2. I guess I'd call myself an intermediate rider.
    3. Right now, I just have one mountain bike.
    4. I've been riding as long as I can remember, probably started in the early 80s.
    5. This is the first bike forum I've joined, but I frequent a couple MINI forums, bass guitar forums, and motorcycle forums.

2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? Beginner
3.) How many bikes you own? 0 at the moment, will be ordering a 2012 Jamis Trail X2 Monday morning.
4.) How long have you been riding? I don;t have ay MTB epxerience per say, but I has a cheap Smith & Wesson bike while deployed to Qatar for 6 months and it was enough to make me want to buy a nicer bike now that I'm back.
5.) What forums do you frequent most? I own militarystangs.com and go to a lot of other Mustang and beer forums.
