Hi. I'm from central Cal at the base of the Giant Sequoias. New to mtn biking but love it.
Own a Cannondale Moto 3. It seems to work fine for now. Going back to China Peak Aug
14 for some DH fun. Who also rides there?

1.) Currently living in Berea, KY.
2.) Still a beginner in terms of official MTBing, but growing up on/around farms, I've always had a bike to play around on. Trail-riding and -racing is fast becoming one of my favorite things.
3.) Three bikes that I ride (MTB, commuter, and one I put a motor on), and anywhere from three to a few thousand others that I use for parts.
4.) Got my first bike when I was about five or six, but didn't start using a bike for transportation or "actual" riding until about seven years ago.
5.) What forums do you frequent most? Primitive Archer, ZoomBicycles, Motorbicycling, GotMead.

I have no idea what brand my MTB is: got it second-hand from someone who tried to do a custom paint job and stripped the decals in the process. Sometime or other, I'll post a picture of it somewhere on here to see if anyone can help identify it.

Ok, ok I'll quit being a lurker.
Live and ride around ABQ, NM area. Been riding casually for years now but recently became an addict. I ride an aluminum Blur XC. Enjoy all kinds of trails and the occasional race. The New Mexico forum is my main source of MTB news for my area.
    Cheers.

    Hi I'm Brad

I'm from the North Georgia area.
I have a Santa Cruz Heckler.
I've been riding for close to ten years, but just in the last five months I have been riding almost everyday.
I ride mostly single track and I like the more technical trails.
Never thought I would enjoy riding as much as I do now.

    New to Off Road

I'm Brad...been a roadie for years but live in one of the best MTB areas in the nation here in the mountains of central MD...and...we have the great C&O canal ride across MD that's just a couple miles from my home...I've tried it all and now want to dip more seriously into some offroad riding to supplement my road riding...

I currently own a Specialized S-Works SL-2 Tarmac road bike & I'm building up a Surly Troll frameset for my offroad needs which will include both harder fitness rides and multi-day treks...

To me...it's all the cheapest form of therapy known to man...

Nickname is Lucho. I placed 13th at Ironman Hawaii in 2003. Ran a 2:30 marathon at Denver in 2007 and then 6th at the Leadville 100 run last year. I'm in the Leadville 100 bike next week... lots of reservations about starting in the last corral.

Hey guys, name is Matt, from Oklahoma...yes its pretty flat here but from the little research I've done I should find some places to shred.

Always had a bike untill I got a car then stopped riding them. Was more a bmx rider. Had a Dyno that was way too heavy. Now I have the urge to get back on a bike and I have always been interested in downhill mtb.

Been looking around at some used bikes so I'm looking forward to getting some feedback, and from the looks of it this forum is pretty active. Am a member of many car forums, mostly Honda/Import but not too active on them now.

    Newbie

    Hi Everyone,

My name is Mike, I'm 25 and new to the forum (and to mountain biking).

    1) I live in Avondale, Arizona
2.) I'm a beginner rider, but due to my skateboarding background I have all the guts just none of the skill, yet.
    3.) 1 Bike. I just bought a Specialized Rockhopper
    4.) 2 weeks
5.) Just started looking at the AZ forums on this website.

My brother and dad got me interested in this crazy sport and I can't get enough so far despite some nasty crashes from going big!

I guess this is the best place to get started...

    1) I am Texas born and raised...
    2) I ride mostly pavement and light XC...
    3) I've gone from 1 to 6 bikes in the past 4 months...
    4) Bought my first MTB 4 months ago...
    5) Hang out mostly in the General forum right now...I'm like a sponge.

My first bike purchase was used and purely spontaneous. My wife was willing to try it out so we got her's from a LBS because she is an XS. Long story short I bought a couple more bikes and now my wife, daughter and son (both teens) ride 2-3 times a week. We are hooked.

Bummer...just saw that I can't post pics until after 10-posts...I'll come back and put some up when I've reached my mark.

    Hi,

    1. Malvern, PA
    2. Beginner. Last time I had a bike was about 24 years ago.
    3. Will be 1. I just got a go from wife so will be getting 2012 Hardrock Disc on my next payday which will be 15th of this month.
    4. Can't remember. It's been too long ago last time I did.
    5. I'll have to see still as I'm just about to start.

Well, 4 more to go before I start asking noob questions.

    1) I'm from the Metro Vancouver area in BC, Canada
    2) I'm more of an opportunist. I ride mostly around the city to do errands, but if i can find a quick trail or something to get where I'm going, even if it is a bit longer, I'll take it
    3) One, due to the life of a poor university student....
    4) I've been trail riding ever since I went camping when I was young, about 10 years old. My first true trail was the perimeter trail around Shuswap Lake Park, and I still like going for speed runs with my cousins on it when I'm there. Started out as 30mins to complete a full run and now I've narrowed it down to around 5-10 mins
    5) To be honest, this is my first true mountain bike forums here.

Helloooo...Cyber-Peeps. Before I hit the bullet points...This site is my fave for reviews. There's alot
of educated opinions that come through here! I've made many part buying decisions based on what
the site users recommend. Thanks for offering what is hands down the most comprehensive MTB
info gathering site on the web!

    Still rock'n my old Fisher

Please allow me to add another topic, What bike do you regret selling!

    1) From? Pittsburgh PA
    2) Rider type? Trail and Recreational
    3) # of Bikes? 2 + a Monkey frame awaiting some parts
    4) Riding since? 1996
    5) Other forums? Dirt-Rag and Stickbow.com
    6) Regretable sale? Jamis Dakar Team frame w/a butt-load of cool parts for a meager $400.
(I needed the money and was glad that an avid rider from MI got a sweet deal)
Last edited by Badassbassangler; 08-02-2011 at 12:43 PM. Reason: adding pic

Wink Why I joined the forum

    Hi to everyone,
    My name is Warren.
    I live in Yukon OK.
I use my Bike(s) to run errands around town, relax and cruise the neighborhoods, looking at houses for sale and to get landscaping ideas for my own home.
I started riding at 7 years young on a 24 inch Montgomery Ward bike. After world war 2 I got a 26 inch bike for my birthday from the Firestone store.

The big reason I joined this forum is that in the process of trying to find a picture of parts breakdown for my suntour thumbshifter on my 1974 schwinn suburban, I ran across your forum and noted all the great comments about thumbshifters and suntour in general. I took my shifter apart to replace the cable, had all the parts laid in a container in the order they came out, and accidentally dumped the container.
I was hoping someone in the forum could tell me how this thing goes back together. I have it back together, but I know it is not right because it doesn't work like it did.
You can contact me at my email address instead of boring the rest of the forum members with the information. I appreciate any help you can give me. email address ([email protected]
    Respectfully,
    Warren

    Hi fellow cycle enthusiasts!

    I live in Golden CO
First and foremost, I consider myself a roadie junkie; secondly, a never-improving mountain bike rider who just adds to my on-going collection of cuts, scrapes and bruises
I own an old Gary Fisher MB, a Trek 2200 Road bike (soon to be replaced by a brand new Parlee Z5 which I won)!!! Thirdly, if this counts, I also own a motorized scooter, which only runs when it feels like it....tempermental SOB!
Been riding MB's far longer than you'd think by my poor handling skills. Road riding since 2002.
    First-time forum for me

bikes? Any and all...singlespeed, hardtail 29er, road and cross, etc.

I don't have a preference for riding...I just like to ride bikes.

Riding bikes since I was a kid - Love MTBR, just never really posted and now I finally have some legit questions so I figured I would ante up. Great reviews here, great info.

    Hey Everybody.

I'm relatively new to the mountain biking community. For a year or so i had only been going on trail rides once a month, however i have more recently gotten more involved in my local MTB community here in Alpharetta, GA.

Currently, i have been riding for two years, and ride a Felt Q520.

    Nice to meet everyone!

Hi Guys, im Scott, i come from Scotland (funny huh? :P ) ive got a cube reaction pro 18" frame which i built using my 2009 cube reaction pro 20" , plenty upgraded/aftermarket parts. Ive also just recently bought a Marin Wolfridge 6.8, took it to the local trail centre and its a bit of an animal, its the first full susser ive owned.
Ive been riding bikes all my life (badly) but have only really started propperly with the trails and going out 2 /3 times a week locally since 2010, its all good so far.

    cheers

Stubbled across MTBR by searching for reviews to research a new mountain bike I plan to get pretty soon.

1.) Where you are from? Originally from New Hampshire but now live in Arizona
2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? Guess I'm somewhere in the middle between expert and training wheels. Tried just about anything on two wheels(with or without a motor)
3.) How many bikes you own? Currently nothing with pedals, hope to change that really soon.
4.) How long have you been riding? Many moons. Looking to get back into mountain bikes after about 7 or so years.
5.) What forums do you frequent most? Mainly frequent quite a few motorcycle forums as motorcycles are one of my true passions.

1.) Where you are from? Hi! I'm Jake from north western PA
2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? beginner/weekend warrior
3.) How many bikes you own? 1
4.) How long have you been riding? Beat up a lot of Kmart specials growing up....then took a 15 year hiatus from anything biking when I got my drivers license! Just started riding again this spring.
5.) What forums do you frequent most? HuntingPA mostly

I just started riding again, mostly for fitness. I like to hit the singletracks and pick my way through roots and rock gardens the most. I've always loved the outdoors and spend a good portion of my free time hunting, fishing, hiking and now MTBing. I don't have the best bike(BD - Dawes Haymaker 1500), but it's working fine and it's far and away the best bike I've ever owned. I'm mechanically inclined and enjoy working on stuff so I'm learning all I can about bikes and doing most of my own work too.

Something like that. Very quiet during the week (everything closes at 9 pm), and crazy on the weekends during the summer. Winter is busy with "winter visitors". Was always more athlete than party animal though. Freaking hot in the summer (regularly 110+), usually windy, and the whole town is on a hill. Didn't bother me much as a kid, but don't know if I could go back.

Has anyone else had difficulty dealing with Bikes Direct? I have e-mailed them for the 3rd and last time and can't believe how unprofessional they were. I inquired about the Motobecane 29er pro which they are out of. All I wanted to know is when they anticipated getting a new shipment of sizes I'm looking for a 19". This company could care less about getting back to me whether it be by phone or e-mail. I'm glad I did not do business with them what if I had problems they won't communicate with you. Since I can't afford the bike I would like at my lbs does anyone have suggestions of a reputable online site to do business with?

Also, can anybody recommend a website that breaks down bike component quality? It's been about 7 years since I looked for a new bike, and all the components are drastically different, I have no clue what is now considered a great shifter set or front fork vs. crap quality. Thanks!

WHAT TO BUY ? kona or commencal ?

    Hi guys,

Having spent a few years out of the biking circuit I've decided to make my return.

Just been looking at a few second hand bikes.

I have the choice of a commencal absoult 2 ( the purple one 2008 ) for 370 Euros.

    Or

Kona Bass 2009, which seems to have a cassette on the back wheel but is set up for a single ride so would need to buy gears etc... 450 Euros

Looking to ride something todo abit of all sorts on, few jumps / drops and even the odd bit of easy freeride

    Thanks for the help.

I'm going to see the bike tomorrow,

Origionaly from Santa Cruz I used to spend most of my weekends and evenings riding all mountain trails then moved to Switzerland and stopped riding. I've been renting bikes over the summer trying XC, AM and DH bikes and so many things have changed a lot since then! In my area there are the alps with so many possibilities of trails to choose from but now I can confidently say I'm more of a AM rider and when feeling a bit crazy try some of the DH tracks. I came to this forum to catch up on everything thats new!

1.) Santa Cruz, CA but living in Switzerland for the last 12 years
2.) Starting to AM rider in Europe.
3.) 1996 Specialized Stuntjumper and 1998 Specialized Fatboy
4.) 3-4 years and now starting to ride again
    5.) thepub.ch, honda-tech.com, now this one

Let me just take a moment to reiterate that the single, biggest reason we are enforcing the post count limit for new users is to battle spammers. And it is a proven deterrent, hands down.

Second, replying to others threads is a good way to "get your feet wet" and really, not that hard to do it legitimately. Do some "troll" and post count pad? Sure, if they are in a hurry and/or lazy. But these practices will be deleted on sight by moderators. Many other users have no problems following these guidelines.

Not meant to single you out, Erick, just want to set the record straight as to why we incorporate these settings in our forums here.

Sucks that your bikes were stolen.

    3. 4: 1990ish Miata (think the frame is all that is stock) "slightly used...", 2004 KHS Dirty Buster, 2010 Trek 4500, 2011 Specialized Camber comp.

    4. Rode the [email protected] out of the Miata between ~90-98, had a break due to outgrowing the bike. The urge hit me again to buy a bike in 2004... ended up with a KHS bmx, rode that for ~2 years, wasnt really for me, spent most time with my face planted on the sidewalk riding that. 2011 new urge... Bought a Trek 4500 on a sale at the LBS, rode that for little over a month then decided to buy the Specialized Camber.

Love my new camber even tho the "problems" im having with it, the fork just about fit the Conti RQ 2.4, having ~3-5mm clerance. But when i stand up and mash the pedals the fork flexes so much that the tire rubs the fork on the left(brake) side... I just need to grind away ~1-2mm on the left side of the "U" section of the fork... can't weaken it that much right...

    5. This forum is all that i need for my bike addiction...

Excuse my poor attempt on the english language...

    1.) Where you are from?
I live in Little Rock, AR and from what I've seen/experienced, it's very bicycle friendly lol.
2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? (ex: beginner, weekend warrior, all mtn/trail rider, XC racer, downhiller, singlespeeder, 29er rider, etc...)
I'm a beginner who's really interested in trail riding, climbing, and some downhill. I ride the average trails around Little Rock.
3.) How many bikes you own?
I just bought my first bike today, so you'll see me posting in a bunch of threads asking for tips/advice. Before today I was riding my mom's small, old, all-rigid woman's bike. It's SO much different from my 2012 Hard Tail 29er Cobia. Obviously I'm very pleased with my purchase haha.
4.) How long have you been riding?
I've been riding for around 2 months. I'm a straight newbie. I ride with my friend who got me into biking, so I know a few of the important basics, such as not pulling the brakes (hydraulic disc) when the front wheel is off, lubing the chain, safety, basic tips like that. Speaking of which, once I get my 5 forum posts, I will be asking in a new thread about removing the front wheel and how to adjust it so it doesn't rub.
5.) What forums do you frequent most?
This one so far, I am completely overwhelmed/anxious..

    Hello all!

I'm a beginner at mountain biking. But I grew up on bikes. Messed around a lot with BMX when I was younger 8 - 16 or so. Then I had a mtb for transportation mostly. Still jumped occasionally. Till I was about 19, at which point I just stopped riding bicycles all together. I'm now 31 soon to be 32 and just 2 weeks ago bought a bike again for the first time in over a decade. It's true, you never forget how to ride. Though the first day or so was sketchy.

My fiance and I decided to get into mountain biking after talking with her brother in law at a wedding. She...not so coordinated, but it's been like 20 years since she's ridden. So we ride the paved trails at a local state park. Till she gets comfortable on the bike. I've ridden some mtb trails at another park close by with my soon to be brother in law, who's been doing it for a few years now. The fiance just doesn't feel in control of her bike well enough to ride the mtb trails. It is an exercise in patients to be sure. I don't care for the paved stuff. I find it rather boring. But my god the mtb trails are a blast!

We just picked up a couple wal-mart cheepies for the time being. Both full suspension, power robbing pieces of ****! As our budget is very limited due to saving for the wedding. We plan to upgrade after the wedding. Tax time 2013. But I have plans to purchase a cheap 29er ($300ish) to try it out. Come February of next year or so. I know, I know, don't waste your money. For one thing, I'm pretty sure my $100 full suspension bike will be a pile of scrap metal before then, and besides I don't want to spend thousands just to find out I don't like 29ers.

Dunno if I'll post much, as I don't know much about this activity/sport. I do know that I'm pretty well addicted already and I don't even have my own helmet yet! Still borrowing one...

    New from Murrieta CA

Hi all! I am new and am I guess whay is called a super Clydsdale! :P pretty funny as sometimes I feel like a horse clip clopping around. Just got back into riding with my wife and kids. Bought a Diamonback Wildwood Citi Classic... I'm taking it back tomorrow as I am already seeing some wear in the rear hub. Anyway, hope to lean lots and maybe figure out what is a good affordable entry ride for me.

    Terve! (means Hi! -pretty obvious)
I'm 32 years old old man from Tampere, Finland.

I've been reading this forum for about a week or so. It's awesome! It's nice to read about things in U.S or Canada or Australia etc. I'm allways looking forward to travel new countries and regions. Haven't been in America yet, but I spent 6 months in Australia about 6 years ago -love it, can't wait to go back there. But I guess Canada is my next destination outside Europe.

    That's about off topic material
I've been riding bicycle for about 30 years. Never too seriously. First single speed bike, then coupple of 6-7 speed bikes. Then I moved to city and kind of forgot cycling for about 7 years -didn't even own a bike. Just riding sometimes with my girlfriends bike.
Then, about 4years ago, I had my son. I realized, I need to take care about my condition (kids are demanding, but the best thing in my life). I started to cycle to work. I bought a Felt hybrid/cross bike. It was pretty good but after coupple of years I wanted something better. I put my money to cyclocross bike, Focus Mares to be exact. I really love it - it's fast, it's fun, it's perfect for my daily commuting. Exept for winter when it's snowing so hard that they can't keep the roads plowed.

So I purchased a single speed 29er, after reading so much good reviews about that kind of bike as a winter/snow bike. I haven't got it yet, I ordered it two days ago and have to wait it about two weeks. But I guess Karate Monkey is worth to wait

I really am going to do some mountainbiking as well when I have enough time. Now the kids, two of them, are going to take my freetime -and ice hockey of course. Then I propably find the last piece of my life.

Thanks for reading, sorry about the spelling mistakes - I'm lazy to use translator I guess my text is understandable.

    Cheers, Possu (piggy)

    Hi ... New here

I'm Mike in Raleigh, NC. I consider myself a Novice though I have had mountain bikes for last 10 years, but never lived in a place with trails. I'm in Raleigh NC and there are an abundance of trails and I'm a couple of hours closer to the NC mountains than I was before. I'm looking forward to getting more involved in the local mtb scene. I'm also interested in giving adventure racing a try

Hello. My name is Randall, and I'm a santa monica moutain range lifer, currently off mulholland right in between backbone, Malibu canyon/ bulldog and the chesboro/suicide trailheads. Love em all, but backbone is my favorite by far. I'm on my girlfriends iPad so no photos, I'll upload some later from my laptop. Here are my suggested addages .
    1.) Agoura/thousand oaks CA area
2.) All mountain/XC, anything that caters to a moto style ride
    3.) I got a 2008 enduro sl and a P3
4.) iv been riding for years, starting with bmx as a kid , did hard tail MTb in the early 2000s, started getting serious on my specialized pitch in 2009. (still working on getting serious)
5.) I mostly find myself in the tech type forums for suspension and setup info

I love to make action videos and I'm looking for some local all mountain/ XC guys who want to make the local trails look good. I mostly ride with a couple buddies of mine, my 51 year old dad and my 21 year old little brother who is an absolute beast on the trail.
Is it thread jacking to post a link to one of my vies here? Hope it's cool. Oh I guess not

    Howdy.
    1) Scot from FL.
    2) Re-beginner. I mostly use bikes for commuting and recreational riding.
    3) Mid-80's Schwinn Traveler set up for everyday use, mid-90's Schwinn Frontier, and I'm scouring CL for a decent hardtail.
    4) I never stopped riding, but did stop riding trails in high school (<10 years ago) and want to get back into it.
    5) I first found this place by checking reviews. Good stuff you have going on here.

    1.) Where you are from?

I live in the Bossier City/Shreveport area in northwest Louisiana.

2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself?

Definitely beginner... mostly road to XC... primarily trying to shrink and strengthen before I worry too much about "real" off-road stuff.

3.) How many bikes you own?

Just one bike right now... It's a Diamondback Response Sport frame circa. 2000 stripped and built back up with decent components... XT, XTR, Raceface, Selle Italia, Easton, Thomson, Salsa, pieces and parts... Changing wheelset/tires right now.

4.) How long have you been riding?

Started seriously in 2000. Rode for a couple of years, but things get in the way. Started riding again July 2011, mostly to lose weight, but I've caught the bug again... When I get back down to a non-dangerous weight/heart rate et al., I plan to start riding local trails in LA and AR.

5.) What forums do you frequent most?

This is my main reference and forums site... I registered back in 2000, but my record and post count seem to have been dumped...

Bike looks almost identical to the following image from July 2000:

Oops... says I have to have 10 posts to include images... oh well... you can see my bike if you really want to at www{.}montac.net/old/mtb

    Hello from Oklahoma

Trying to stick with the newbie formula, I'll try to answer the questions in order. I'm from Stillwater, Oklahoma.I mostly ride local trails due to job. But we have 4 great trails at nearby Lake McMurtry, so I can't complain much. I personally only carry one bike at a time. I just sold my beloved '98 model GT and bought a 2012 Specialized Rockhopper 26". Been riding since 1998. I'll probably be in the forums dedicated to repair, reviews and nutrition.

    Newbie..

I'm relatively new to the MTB scene, but loving it. I bought my hardtail with the mindset of primarily road, sidewalk, and paved trail riding with the ability to go off-road if need be. The Trek 3500 filled that role admirably. Now that I've left the paved roads, I'm looking to upgrade my off-road capabilities. I'm looking for a solid package in the $700 range that is solid enough to handle any moderate level single track and can also be easily upgraded. I've looked at Cannondale F4 & F5, Trek 4300 disc & 4500, and an IBEX Alpine 550. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

1.) Where you are from? Currently, Chattanooga, TN
2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? weekend warrior, mtn trail - an aggressive beginner
3.) How many bikes you own? Just my Trek 3500
4.) How long have you been riding? casual road riding, several years. 6 months on the trail.
5.) What forums do you frequent most? Just MTBR for bikes and TacomaWorld

    Hi to everybody!

I'm from Italy, near bologna, I'm 47, male, and really I find hard to declare what kind of rider I am!
The best thing is to try to describe: No more than a ride per week, no more than few hours, this due to family management... you know! I like something between XC and AM, and I'm happy both in climbing and downhill tracks.
Surely I like single tracks rather than less technical routes.

I started riding mtb in early '90, but after some years I stopped (I started to play soccer in a local enthusiast team) then I started again in 2007, but from late 2008 until this spring, my second son asked me to stop again... you know how babies need time.

Now I restarted with my 2007 cannondale rush 5, and i push this bike to a std 12 kg (no pedals) weight by means of some upgrades.

Rush is an old fashioned marathon bike, but it's confortable for me and I am a lefty fan, so I'm happy with this bike.

I found this forum very useful for my bike purchase and upgrade, and I'm happy to thank you for your suggestions.

    Luca

    Hi Everyone

My name is Mark. I live in St. Charles MO. I've been riding a long time, but just recently started looking around the internet for forums; this seems to be one of the better ones. Mostly I have frequented computer forums until now, such as Tom's Hardware and Overclockers. I've been riding road bikes since the late 60's and mountain bikes since the early 80's. I have two Ritchey Everests, an '81 and a '91; they are both original, but I plan on up-grading the '91 this winter. I'd also like to get a 29er in the next year or so. I have a couple of road bikes, too. I like doing long rides.

    Hello from Michigan.

Hey guys just wanted to say hello from michigan. Just getting back into riding after about 8 years off. I was a pretty hardcore weekend warrior (if that is a thing, lol). I would ride trails in michigan atleast 3 weekends a month until my Trek 8000 (anodized purple frame, real beauty!) was stolen off of my balconey where I lived (who'd of thunk that a lock was needed on a third floor balconey, LOL).

Anyway never replaced the bike, got married, had kids and work a crap ton, but now I am in the mood to start riding again.

I'm kinda on a budget so I have been keeping an eye on craigs list for a nice used bike.

Going to look at a Giant XTC SE2 for $375 (not sure what model year) but atleast from the pics it looks to be in good shape and of course the seller "bought it and only rode it twice" lol.

Hope to spend some more time here once I get riding again.

    Jay.

2.) Beginner for sure, I'm still on the hunt for my first 'real' bike since I was a kid.
3.) Currently, my dad gave me his since his balance isnt so hot anymore. It's a comfort ride that the wife rides haha!
    4.) See above
5.) I'm a big car guy, BMW's are my thing currently. I spend most of my forum time on one of those sites or on photography forums as that's what pays some of my bills!

Joining this site so I can absorb as much information as I can. I spent today at 3 shops just asking questions and trying to figure out which route I want to go. I plan to buy used to save a few bucks so hopefully I can locate a bike!!

So, now that I'm official. when does the hazing begin?

1.) Where you are from? (as specific as you care to share)

Originally Northern California, Seattle for the past 17 years.

2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? (ex: beginner, weekend warrior, all mtn/trail rider, XC racer, downhiller, singlespeeder, 29er rider, etc...)

Beginner off-road mountain biker, very experienced road rider (almost all done on MTB's). Ex-courier, specialized in cargo, commute a 100 miles a week, all on an MTB, albeit tweaked a little for touring.

3.) How many bikes you own?

    Four:
    - My "Multi-Tank" 20+ year old GT MTB (probably a '88 or '89), used for daily commuting in-city, and for bike-camping/touring.
    - A 20 year old Sekai MTB ('91) I picked up essentially NIB as a spare should something happen to the GT. It's still in all original condition, sat in someone's garage for the past 20 years, not ridden at all, the brake pads showed zero wear as did everything else! I'll be building it up to my specs this Winter.
    - Freak bike/rat rod based on an old (Schwinn?) double top tube cruiser. My Dead Baby Downhill bike now that I don't go to the desert anymore, where it used to see much more action.
    - An old Nishiki frame waiting patiently to be built up as my polo bike.

4.) How long have you been riding?

Depends on how you measure things. Rode to school growing up and for fun a bit, but never had a bike I liked. Never got a BMX like I wanted and when my parents got me a 10 speed later I hated it and stopped riding until my mid twenties when I discovered mountain bikes, but only rode those on the road for many years. For six years my bicycle was my only form of transportation and some of those years I'd only experience being in a car once or twice in the whole year. During that time I also spent two years as a legal messenger. Inexplicably I took about a seven year hiatus from cycling and just finally finished rebuilding my GT five months ago and have been riding 300-450 miles a month since then. When it comes to actual mountain biking I have only done a little tame trail riding a few times over the years, but I'd like to do more and finally have the opportunity to do so sometimes now.

I tried to add a picture of my GT loaded down for touring and one of my brand new 20 year old Sekai, but the rules of the forum won't let me post pictures yet. Lame.

I am from central Ohio area, boring riding around here, mostly paved trails

I'm getting back into riding mtb, haven't rode much since I was in my teens/early twenties

I have two bikes, my older 19.5 inch 14 year old trek 830 with hardly any wear, given to wife
and just bought a 21 inch trek 4300 (love it!!)

I guess I already answered this, used to ride for fun over ten years ago. I miss it and need to get back into shape

New here, bmx in the younger days, now enjoy trail riding and single speed cruising. Current project is a single speed 89 Schwinn Alure, which is a bigger headache than anticipated.... wish me luck!

ciao my I am a newbie to MTBR

Hi, my name is Massimo (Massi for short) and I am new to the MTBR community. I wanted to introduce myself a bit. I have been riding for long time and I guess as far as I can remember I started riding a lot with a BMX first and the all sort of bikes. I love riding and I don't think I could live without riding for too many days. I am originally from Italy and I am now living in the US. I just moved to CT and trying to find trails where to ride, I am sure I will find some good trails.

    Ciao, Massi.

Been riding for 15 years on and off over the years.
Living in Atlanta i spend most of my time on the road riding my cyclocross bike. Raced one season of cyclocross so far and loved it. I prefer mountain biking but lack the time to drive the 45 minutes each way to the good trailheads around here on a regular basis.

    Current stable of bikes:
New addition built up a On-One 456 Summer Season 26" HT
    2008 Redline Conquest Cyclocross
    197? Fuji turned fixed gear
2000 Specialized Rockhopper with a few upgrades that have gotten it through the years

Hi everyone, Art V. from El Paso, Texas, originally from Los Angeles, CA.
Definitely a beginner at mountain biking but XC, all mountain, freeride appeal to me.
I own an old Trek 830 to ride around the neighborhood and just bought a 2010 Scott Aspect 55 (stock components).
I have been riding bikes since I can remember, but mountain biking since I bought my "Scott", which was this past weekend. I think I got a good deal: $340 for it on craigslist.
MTBR is the first and only forum I have been on. Hoping to get alot from all the experience this community has.

Hope to get some pics soon.

    Riding is Awesome.

    Hi, I'm Chris.

1.) Where you are from? Mid-MO

2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? Beginner on the MTB scene.

3.) How many bikes you own? Just one, a 2009 Cannondale F7

4.) How long have you been riding? I'm just getting back into riding after about 20 yrs. I've ridden the Katy Trail quite a bit but am beginning to venture out and explore more of the MTB trails I'm learning of recently. I raced BMX from '83-'88 on Redlines, GT's, Mongoose's and Skyway's. A buddy and I operated a local track with our dad's for a while as well. Seems as though building and cruisin muscle cars took priority once I got out of high school.

5.) What forums do you frequent most? Lurk and learn here alot and other outdoor related sites.

What's happening! I'm from Jefferson City in central Missouri. I'm an aspiring all mountain/trail rider looking for less xc-ish places to ride in my area. I also ride/race mx, so while xc is good training, I prefer more challenging, high speed terrain. I recently sold my first real bike, a 2007 Specialized Hardrock in hopes of buying something that is more my style. I'm going to try to build a all mountain hardtail on a budget. We'll see how it goes. I've been lurking in the all mountain forum for a while and finally decided to register. It's good to be here.

    Hey, What's Up?
I'm George, an old guy from no. cal. checking this site cause I'm in need of a right RS Mag 21 lower.

    To answer the rest:
Tamarancho in Marin County has great trails but trails are plentiful in the Bay Area.
There are some nice trails in the other posted pics though.
Took up AM biking a couple of years ago and have moved up to a almost stock Tracer- (great bike- like a Trance 1)- added a KS drop seat recently..... way cool.

If anyone has the Mag 21 lowers call me @ 415-8194515 Thanks.

    Hi,

I'm from The SF Bay Area Peninsula, 3 miles from Water Dog, and about a 20 minute drive from Skeggs.

I've been riding my mtn bike on the street for a couple of months, and just started mtn biking 2 weeks ago. I ride a fairly stock '07 Trek 6500 hardtail. I'd say I'm between beginner and intermediate.

I only own the one bike.

I've been riding bicycles on and off since I was 8, hasn't everyone?

I mostly frequent SBR, and the D36 AMA site
    .

Picked up an '08 Trek 4500 earlier this year and have been hitting a few trails here in Indy, all singletrack so far. It's been about 20 yrs since I've done any real riding so it can be a challenge, but loving it so far.

    See you on the trails!

    Hi all

    My name is Miguel, and

    1.) I'm from Setbal - Portugal
2.) I did road competition on my youth but know I'm more a mtbiker weekend warrior. I do marathons but what I really like is having a 60km technical singletrack ride for breakfast
3.) I own 2 bikes right know, a Colombus road bike with 17 years old (the last one I used for competition) and my new Trek Ex 5 with small upgrades.
4.) I started back in the 80's with a BMX bike, but soon got involved in road competition and started with mtb bikes in 1994. Know I do both but only for leisure
5.) I mainly use forumbtt which is a national mtb forum, but I'm lookinf forward to get some ideas and help from you guys

    All the best
    Miguel

Hello all. Donnie here from Graham Texas. I am a Department of Air Force civilian, specifically a Deputy Director for F-22 technical training. Used to ride many many years ago. Entering sort of a new phase in my life where I need to refocus on diet and exercise. Wanting to add some mountain biking in the mix. Used to ride/race motocross and dirt trail many years ago.

At this point, in this context, I would consider myself a beginner.

Shopping around right now for a entry-levelish HT that I can use for pavement and light trail but don't currently own one.

Also looking for something for my youngest daughter ( 8 years old, youngest of 5). The kid LOVES to ride bikes.

    Hey all,

RMB from Nova Scotia, just moved back here from Alberta, man do I miss the biking there.

Currently riding a Rocky Mountain Flare, been biking since I was 17, only really started getting serious about it last year.

Looking to compete in a race by next year.

I would consider my self a beginner/weekend warrior, unfortunately missed most of the riding this summer due to planning my wedding, which is in two weeks. Hope to get back into the saddle this week for some great rides, not as much on the east coast as there was out west, but there truly are some hidden gems.

    That's all for me.

Hello to all crazy(yes you are) mtb people

Found this site while doing some research on old Diamond Backs.

I'm 41 from Scotland and been riding bikes all my life, mtbs since about 88 with a Raleigh Dune Dancer, a few bikes later I got a 95 Diamond Back Ascent EX and i've been riding it ever since.

I had a bad crash in 2000 and i've never rode as hard again as I lost alot of nerve but I still ride hard in short bursts when i'm out and about.

My bike has been going downhill(pardon the pun) for quite a few years and recently I had no choice but to replace the tyres and inner tubes ,after cleaning up the wheels and fitting the tyres I decided to overhaul the whole bike.

Thanks to all those riders of old Diamond Backs on this site that have posted pictures and information going back years as they proved valuable to me while making my bike nice again

Edited to add a pic of my bike

    Hello

I am from SW VA and have been riding bikes for 25 of the 30 years I have been on earth. Rode BMX as a kid, the commuted through college and some work, but just recently got into real mountain biking. I've been riding a 29er hardtail for a few weeks now and am enjoying it.

... and if we just ... Another "old" newbie

Just joining to pursue interest and thank people who've already helped me in setting up my Schwinn High Plains. I learned a lot by reading posts, and thought I'd join the fun. I've sort of inherited the High Plains we bought for my son in '92, and use it to keep up with our granddaughter, who's five now and high-energy!

Now tuning the Schwinn up for four days of camping.

    Thanks everybody!

Hey guys - new to the boards. Looking for advice. 5'10 and 208 lbs. I have a 2001 Hardrock Comp now that I have been riding for 10 years. Great bike, but now looking to get another one. The two finalists are:
    - 2012 Specialized Rockhopper 29er
    - 2012 Trek-Fisher Mamba 29er
Both in 15.5 frame. Biggest differences that I can tell are Suntour XCM fork and Tektro brakes in Rockhopper. RockShox XC32 Fork and Shimano M446 brakes in Trek. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Both are new at my LBS. I would post pics but apparently I can't until I have a post count of 10...

In Honolulu - looking to ride

    Scott Coates here.
Originally from Calgary, Canada, been living in Thailand for almost 12 years where I run a travel company.
Just moved to Honolulu where I'll be staying at the East-West Center in the Manoa Valley until the end of December and brought my bike with me.
Currently riding a Norco Fluid, which was purchased in 2007.
    Been riding since 1999.

Looking for some riding buddies in the area. Let me know if you're willing to have me tag along for a ride.

I've been here for like a month or two but just found this thread.

1.) Where you are from? (as specific as you care to share)
SF Bay Area in the 925 to be not as specific
2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? (ex: beginner, weekend warrior, all mtn/trail rider, XC racer, downhiller, singlespeeder, 29er rider, etc...)
Casual rider I guess. I like singlespeed, Monocog for trails and my beater Trek 850 SS conversion for around town. Mostly ride my Trek FX 7.2 hybrid for fitness most days of the week on the road.
3.) How many bikes you own?
    3
4.) How long have you been riding?
Off and on forever but most recently maybe barely over a year
5.) What forums do you frequent most? (either here or on other sites)
On MTBR: Beginners Corner, Singlespeed, NorCal, Philippines. I also check out roadbikereview.com. I check out other sites for other hobbies like my cars, videogames (fighting games only), and IT stuff (how I pay bills)

Hey guys - looking to buy soonest to upgrade from 2001 Specialized Hard Rock Comp. I have now whittled the choices down to a few - all brand new - available from my LBS: They are:
    - 2012 Trek GF Mamba 29er (870 plus tax)
    - 2009 Gary Fisher Tassajara 26 (699 plus tax)
    - 2009 Trek 6500 (850 plus tax)

I really like the Tassajara, but I have a hard time spending $700 for it when I can get a brand new 2012 Mamba for 150 bucks more. That said, the Tassajara has some fantastic components. Some better than the Mamba. Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

    Got lucky with a bike!

Hey guys I got a great deal on a 2001 GT bike that I paid 25bucks for. I know its nothing special but it beats sitting on the couch. I'm a big guy so I've checked out the Clydesdale forums and got a lot of help. Just dropping in to say hi and make myself known!

    Q&A:
    1. Where are you from? Littleton, CO
    2. Type of rider? Mountain, Road
    3. How many bikes? 1 bike, hardtail
    4. How long riding? 4 months not counting when I was a kid. I played college hockey and about 2.5 years ago I had a career ending injury so no more contact sports for me so I am getting into biking
    5. Add'l forums? fishexplorer.com

    Newbie

Just bought my 1st MT bike. Jamis Exile 1 . Nice bike, but have been riding dirt bikes my whole life, so i'm not overly impressed. Bought it to get in shape for racing. I will say this, riding is a great work out, and high up on the hootage scale. I live in a area where I can ride from my front yard, Portola / Graeagle CA area, so I have ample trails to explore, plus alot of trail junkies to ride with.
This site looks like it has alot to offer, so looking forward to joining in.

    An old newb

    1.) Where you are from?
    Los Angeles
2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself?
Would probably classify myself as a weekend warrior. Looking to get into XC, single track, all mtn.
3.) How many bikes you own?
Two: A brand new 2012 Trek 3500 Disc (not sure if I'm keeping it) and an enormous black cruiser I call the 'Caddie'.
4.) How long have you been riding? As long as I can remember. My son is now of age for some real riding and I decided it was time I started getting back into it.
5.) What forums do you frequent most? Here, SingleTrack and an other sites I come upon that help educate me on the sport.

Looking forward to getting to know all of you. I have a feeling I will be coming here a lot.

1.) Phoenix, AZ. Riding distance to the South side of South Mountain.
2.) Its hard to pick one since I just got back into mountain biking this year but I really enjoy all aspects of it.
3.) I currently have three bikes, two that are ridable and the other collecting dust. I picked up a '96 Trek Y11 about 6 months ago to see if I wanted to get back into it. It has been a great bike but it felt a little small riding it. I just picked up a '06 Stumpjumper FSR last weekend and love it so far.
4.) I have been riding bikes for quite some time. I did the BMX thing in middle school and high school. Picked up my first mountain bike Freshman year. Got away from riding in Junior year and just ths year picked it back up.
5.) I just signed up today, but frequently browse the beginers section and Arizona section.

Stan here from Mount Shasta CA. I ride my DRZ 400 more than my bike probably because it has full suspension and my Stump Jumper doesn't. I am looking for help with my sons Rocky Mountain Carve which has a broken swing arm at the front derailer bracket screw but found I can't start a thread in the Rocky Mountain forum until I post elsewhere 5 times. One down and four to go.

    From India

    Hi Guys!

This is Bappu from India and I live in Pondicherry which is 100 miles south of Chennai in South India.

I have a Cannondale F5 CO2 2009 model and am a mixed kind of rider - like trails, roads and hills as well.

Cycled / walked most of my school and college life and the first 4-5 years of my working life it was cycling till I got my motor bike.

Have been cycling quite regularly since 2005 onwards.

    Cheers!

    Any average riders in Portland?

First post, just saying hey. Like to ride full-mountain, been on some epic PNW trips with buddies out here. Only, I left the country for two years, peace corps, came back n now they're out of my league. Would love to meet some average skilled MTB'rs in Portland area. I'm only familiar with Sandy Ridge, Scapoose. Looking to explore Mt. Hood before summer is over. Could take turns driving?

    peace

    newbie singlespeeder

1.) Where you are from? (as specific as you care to share)
2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? (ex: beginner, weekend warrior, all mtn/trail rider, XC racer, downhiller, singlespeeder, 29er rider, etc...)
3.) How many bikes you own?
4.) How long have you been riding?
5.) What forums do you frequent most? (either here or on other sites)

Hi - I Matt, Im from South-Eastern Michigan - I used to ride alot of single track - Particularly Pontiac lake State park and Potowatomi in Ann Arbor. Im too old now to ride those and too out of shape - I just bought a 2008 Surly 1X1 and absolutely love it - it has made me want to ride again. I rode almost daily from 1989 until about 1999 and then life kicked in. A friend pointed me to this forum when i was searching for a singlespeed to buy. I am currently in the market to upgrade to disc brakes as i cannot stand the rims brakes i currently have.
