    (1) Chattanooga, TN...but have had the pleasure of living in & riding the worlds best terrain including Colorado, Germany, Washington.

    (2) Experienced trail rider

    (3) Currently just 1 bike. I had owned 5 high end bikes which a nasty ex of mine decided to sell off while I was in Iraq.

    (4) I have been on a bike my entire life but decided to get serious about cycling in 1997, so 14 years of quality saddle time

    (5) I don't use any forums all that much. I do keep up with my favorite manufacturers, retailers, and teams on Facebook

Just looking to get the coveted 5 post count thing down so I can get some feedback on what people think about getting in road miles on a mountain bike. At the moment it's my only option. I need to get out & ride everyday, but due to weather, the cost of travel to trails, I'm thinking why not hit up the road daily and get some fitness in. Do any of you hit up the road on your mountain bikes? I'm rebuilding, and a road bike is in the future but in the meantime I feel like I have to do the best with what I have. Or is it just not worth the effort?

1.) Where you are from? (as specific as you care to share)

Born and raised in the bay area...San Jose, California

2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? (ex: beginner, weekend warrior, all mtn/trail rider, XC racer, downhiller, singlespeeder, 29er rider, etc...)

I consider myself an intermediate rider. I use to ride 4 times a week up until the point I got married and started a family. That was about 7 years ago. I just started riding again less then a month ago. I often visit Alum Rock Boccard0, Stevens Creek Canyon, and Grant Ranch.

3.) How many bikes you own?

Current 1. 2000 Klein Mantra carbon fiber.

4.) How long have you been riding?

I picked up mountain bike riding in the mid 90's.

5.) What forums do you frequent most? (either here or on other sites)

1st mountain bike forum I have joined. Since I last picked up a bike it seems as though this sport has grown.

Add anything else you care to share.

I have a upgrade question to ask. Since the rule prohibit me from posting a new thread I am unable to ask my question in the appropriate sub forum.

Yesterday I fried my rear hub and decided to spend a little money on the bike and upgrade both front and rear wheels. There is a Mavic M517 ceramic coated rim mounted with XTR M960's for $450 out the door, is it worth it to spend the money on this vintage set?

Hey everyone just checking in. I have recently got back into mtn biking after a few years out of the saddle. I know it's going to be a long road in getting back to what I use to do but I have forgot how much I love to ride. I'm in the Olympia, WA area and I would consider myself a weekend warrior in the all mountain class if I had to actually class myself. The only ride I have right now is a KHS fsc 504 now but I am on the hunt for a Giant or Norco FS to upgrade. As I said, I have been riding off and on since 1995 and the last time I really rode was 2005. As far as as other forums, I visit a few Jeep forums and some tactical ones and my passion over the last few years has been shooting.

    Thanks,
    OP4

    Hello to all

1.) Where you are from? Apache Junction, AZ
2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? I consider myself beginner but think I have a little bit of skill, so maybe a step above beginner
3.) How many bikes you own? 2 - Trek XC, Giant Revel 0
4.) How long have you been riding?15ish years (no off road), last 6 months have been off roading
5.) What forums do you frequent most? not too many

I found a new liking after riding a bike with ft suspension (a lot of rocks and rough stuff out here in the desert). No more aching wrists and hands.
I have ridden dirt bikes and still ride road bikes (motorcycles). I enjoy scuba diving, although I don't go as much as I would like. Just about anything outdoors.
I thought mountain biking would help me get back into shape a bit while enjoying the great outdoors. I will probably frequent the Arizona part of the forums but thought I should introduce myself to all.

Brandon here! I just got back into mountainbiking after hiatus for about 8 years. Had surgery on my elbow and all I wanted to do was get active again.
I picked up a sweeeeeeet gently used SC Tazmon while I was still in a cast and now I'm back on the trails here near Vegas. Good times!

Hello everyone my name is Shane . I fell back into riding with a local group of photographers , who happen to ride all of the time. Since purchasing my bike I've have lost 27+ pounds and have found a whole new me or at least got in touch with the inner child I lost way back when I started driving . I ride 2 to 3 times a week now 99% offroad as we have some great trails around here . Looking forward to finding some more great trails .

Have to get my post count up so I can post in the SoCal area!

    I'm in Murrieta, CA.
I guess I'm an intermediate rider.
I own a Santa Cruz Superlight and a DeRosa steel road bike.
I've been riding since I was about 6 or so and I'm 55 now.
This is the only bike forum I am on (so far). I'm on a bunch of car/hot rod, motorcycle and boat forums but you all probably don't care about that!

Relatively new to this area and am looking for trails and riders.

    Hi there

Was hoping to receive some advice from members here but finding it difficult to post in the sections that would fit my questions. I assume this forum has been hammered by spammers or something, which would explain the strict first post requirements.

Anyhow, I'm Steve... reside in SE PA. I've been mountain biking on the trails in SEPA and NEPA since about 2000. Here's the thing though, I've been doing so on a POS Trek. It was the bottom of the barrel model when I picked it up 8 or so years ago. And truthfully... I shouldn't call it a POS since it has treated me very well.

I do mountaineering and oddly enough have the best equipment for it. When it comes to biking though... for some reason I've never splurged.

I'd like to change that. I'm starting to trail ride around here more frequently and given that the trek is a hardtail with rubber breaks... it's just not cutting it anymore. I don't know much about modern bikes but from the looks of them... they've come a LONG way.

I asked a buddy who does a lot of riding what bike I should get. He claimed that I should stick with Specialized and he recommended the Enduro Comp. Definitely a steep price tag... but it it's worth it, I'd certainly be willing to spend the money.

I was hoping to hear from you guys - would it be insane for someone to pick up their first *real* bike for $3k or whatever the going rate is for that bike?

One thing's for certain... it'll get used.

    Thanks in advance!

    -Steve

A few of the bike shops tried to talk me into a road bike, but I wanted an option later on to do some trails. Plus who doesn't like the looks of a Mountain Bike!!!

been trying to get myself around on all these trails of salt lake. did millcreek climb from pay stop to pipe line to rattlensnake gulch today. rattlesnake is supposed to be advanced tech? thought it was pretty mellow. at first i was hesitant to take the gf down but she ended up saying the descent was a walk in the park. Trying to find some good tech. rides around salt lake, or anywhere worthy of a weekend trip. thanks

    Hello, all.

I am actually not new to MTB Review. I have posted several trails over the years but never anything to this forum.

    1) I am from Washougal, WA.
    2) I am a daily MTB rider--1500 miles so far this year, about 90% of this on my mountain bike, the other 10% on a road bike (just to say I did it). We ride in the rain here in Washington at least half the year.
    3) I (we) have 17 bicycles, five unicycles (one of them a five-foot giraffe unicycle), and an ultimate wheel. With seven children, all of whom ride and race moutain bikes and some of whom also ride/race unicycles, our RV is quite a sight with our five-bike ATOC Draftmaster rack on the back and our four-bike Thule rack on the front, fully loaded.
    4) Like most folks, I have been riding since I was five or six, but only casually until 11 years again when I bought my first MTB--a 2000 GT Timberline hardtail. Now I ride a Giant Trance. We have been replacing all the cheap garage-sale bikes with Specialized & Felt from our local shop as the hand-me-downs wear out. Hopefully, only good bikes from now on.
    5) I have spent a lot of time on the trail review forums here

    Giant Trance X3 bottom bracket

I cannot figure out how to get past the "To create new threads in this forum your post count must be 5 or greater. You currently have 1 posts." message when trying to post this to the Manufacturers -> Giant forum, so I am posting here.

Giant just replaced my failing Trance2 frame with a TranceX3 frame under warranty. Unlike my Trance2, which required a threaded bottom bracket, the Trance X3 requires a press-fit bottom bracket (41 mm ID). I have a Shimano SLX/Hollowtech II crankset/bottom bracket set and am trying to determine two things:

    1. Is there a press-in adapter that will allow me to use my threaded bottom bracket (my preferred solution), or
    2. Is there a press-fit bottom bracket for this frame and crankset combination?

    2) I'm a weekend warrior now, did a few XC races back in the late 1980's and have just gotten back into riding more seriously the last couple of years.
    3) One bike guy here, a 2009 Trek 6500 hardtail - considering a GF Hi-Fi 29er.
    4) Started Mountain Biking in the mid 1980's on a Univega - moved up to a Klein Pinnacle and rode that off and on until 2009 when I bought the Trek above.
    5) I like the review forums, lots of good unbias info there.

Yikes, four posts in and I am just now finding this thread! Well five posts now.

1.) Upstate NY, but I live in Maryland right now.

2.) XC for sure. I basically just try not to kill myself.

3.) Five for me, which isn't counting the two I bought my wife.

    4.) Since 1984

5.) I'm still finding my way around. It's a big place and I'm still trying to work out where everything is.

1.) Where you are from? I live in Phoenix, Arizona USA
2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? Beginner, AM/XC
3.) How many bikes you own? 1 - Giant Revel 1
4.) How long have you been riding? Rode BMX as a kid religiously, but have just recently started mountain biking, 6 weeks (already lost 10lbs)
5.) What forums do you frequent most? MTBR.com (only mountain bike forums I've found that i like).

Add anything else you care to share. - I just bought a house, and realized that I could get a mountain bike (apt was very small, no room for a bike, and a friends bike was stolen, completely turned me off of getting a bike until I got a house. Its amazing, how now I can "find the time" to get some miles in on my bike. I friggen love it. Just in 6 weeks I've already lost noticeable weight (both in number and in physique). I wish I would have started this sooner.

And feel free to post a photo of your bike or even better, you riding your bike on your local/favorite trail!.

First and maybe last post due to restrictions on posting...

New to the forum. Not very knowledgeable about bikes as I'd rather just ride them. Don't really care to much for all the specifics. That said I've finally reached the point that it's time to retire my first bike, a 98 Jamis Dakota. So after 13 years on this bike I decided I needed two bikes instead of just one and I've invested in a WFO 9. Couldn't pass on a great deal. However, it's WAY overkill for most of the riding I do so looking at keeping it real with a SIR 9 built as a SS. Now my problem. Never ridden SS and no real option to try it out, but love the idea of it. Another bit of disclosure, I had knee surgery 7 months ago and am not sure the knee can handle the load but am still intrigued to try. 32-20 on my 26er is about the limit. Is SS a dumb idea? What would be a good gearing choice? Can any one steer me towards some discussions on gearing for SS? eg the physics of ratios, lever arms, comparisons between 26" and 29", etc. Thanks for the help!

ps Do people actually ever read these newbie posts?

    Hey I'm j-curl

    I'm from California

I'm about as green as you can be when it comes to biking, I haven't been on a bike in about 13 years. For some reason I've developed a strong urge to ride and I fully intend to indulge myself.

I don't own a single one. That's actually why I'm here, to find help and advice on what I should be looking for as a beginner. Unfortunately I can't create topics yet to ask lol.

How long have I been biking? I haven't, but I fully intend to start doing it regularly.

As far as biking forums go, this would be my first one.

    Whats good people?

I'm new to the forums but not to the game, been ridin all my life, just turned 23.

I'm from Eureka, CA, its way up north.

I started "seriously" riding with I was about 16, got into XC, rode the hell out of a XTC, one day I launched a 7 stair to flat and cracked it... sent it to Giant, they sent back an STP. launched a 12 to flat a while later, sent the STP to Giant haha, got another STP... I no longer go that big to flat on my STP

I built a Steelhead SS with a freecoaster and I ride urban with that, also cracked that one doin... iono what, probably that same 12 stair. So looking to replace it maybe with something from atomlab.

I also have a Bullit, the newer version, have yet to crack that *crosses fingers*

Anyway just wanted to say hi.

I'm from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. I am SICK of having my bikes stolen from my backyard. You'd think hiding the damn thing behind two giant pine trees, completely out of site, in a relatively low crime area, would be enough.

    New to MTBR

As directed just checking in and saying high to everyone. I have been riding consistently for about 3 years, but have gotten a little more serious this year and thought this would be a good place to gain some information that in reality I know jack squat about.

So hello, I'm from MN and I'm looking to pull the trigger on a decent bike for winter commuting.

    Hi there,

I started following mtbr because there are a lot of bikers here form different countries. Lots of useful info etc.

1.) I am from Sint Pancras, Netherlands
2.) I ride for some years now, cross country mostly
3.) HT MTD and a road bike
4.) 20 years or so. Last couple of years a bit more miles/km's
5.) mountainbike.nl/mountainbike.be/fiets.nl (Dutch and Belgium forums)

I am also a runner. This used to be my main activity. I do 10km-21km runs and crosscountry running in the winterseason.
I am looking for a new bike for 2012. Want to go full suspension and I am very enthousiastic about the 29ers. I am glad to see there are finally some 29er fullies coming tot Europe this and next year.

Anyone visiting the Netherlands and wants some bike-advice (tracks, transportation, rental), please ask :-)

2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? beginner
3.) How many bikes you own? 1

1.) Where you are from? Southern California, Inland Empire.
2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? Weekend Warrior/commuter.
3.) How many bikes you own? 3! An all mountain, a hard tail, and a 24 inch bmx cruiser.
4.) How long have you been riding? 16 years, mostly bmx. I made an awesome switch to the mountain. Nothing better then being out in the forest. May the Forest be with you.
5.) What forums do you frequent most? None
6.) What are your favorite places to ride? As far as local trails. I ride from 7 oaks on the Santa Ana River Trail, Hurkey Creek, and big bear/snow summit. Hulda Crooks is fun to. My favorite vacation trails are found in Mammoth, and BrianHead Utah.

As for my user name I am a prop 215 medical cannabis patient. I have mild to severe chronic pain from a previous leg injury. I was hit by a car when I was a kid and I now have 4 screws and a rod in my right leg. The cannabis allows me to be active still. I can ride a bike once again. As before the pain would deter me from it. Its a safe natural alternative that I prefer over the toxic overly prescribed prescription drugs.

My name is Gerry and I live in Billings, MT. I am mostly a roadie and ride a Scott CR1 which I truly enjoy. I also have an old Pro-Flex Reptile with new urethane springs that I started riding again recently and was starting to get hooked on trail riding. I was supposed to be in a novice 10 mile MTB race last Sunday, but on Friday while trail riding I fell into a boulder and fractured a rib, which along with the bruising to the muscles on the left side of my spine, has turned out to be truly painful. I didn't race on Sunday and have been home from work taking it easy ever since. I'm 66 and only work part-time so I can take time off when I want or need it. So, I've been researching HT 29ers and so far at the top of my list to try is the Scott Scale 29. I am pretty sure I won't ride the MTB as much as the road bike so I'm not really interested in a CF frame. I hang out at RBR some and this place looks quite familiar in terms of layout.

1.) Petaluma , CA (north bay)
2.) I've always said that the only reason I ride up a hill, is so I can ride down it, but there is some satisfaction to conquering a gnarly climb, so I guess that would fall under all mountain.

4.) I've been riding off and on for around 15 years.

Don't ya just hate waiting for your self to repair.
Again its gunna give me time to buy more bits for my broken horse.
I'm looking to buy a buy a new bike soon, been looking at a lappy but keen to try a trek soon.
My marin is gettin a little old now and like all marins they've never moved on, so its time to change.
2007 attack trail with lots a hope and sram, wide race face bars and 200mm rotars that didn't help me stop.

Newbie seeking help choosing Cannondale bike

    Hey everyone,
After years of road riding, I want to get off the blacktop and try some trails.
I live in Milwaukee, Wis., and will be riding in the Kettle Moraine area on single-track trails -- nothing too challenging to start with, but I want to advance my skills fairly quickly.
In choosing a bike, my goal is to get something that won't be disappointing in a few years but that won't break my bank account.
I am pretty much committed to Cannondale, through my local bike shop.
That said, would the Flash 3 be a good choice?
Would the Flash 2 or Flash 1 (aluminum) be that much better for fairly aggressive recreational riding? (I weigh 170 pounds and, at times, would push the bike pretty hard).
Many thanks in advance for your thoughts on this.
    Glad I found this forum.
    Ride safe,
    Redline09

I'm so new I don't even have a bike yet, reading here at MTBR for 2 weeks now and just about ready to buy. I live way down in Baja, Mexico. I want a bike for aerobic excercise and weight loss (currently 6'-0" and 250#). Owned 26ers in the past, I have zeroed on a 29er hardtail as the right type of bike for my intended usage and physical size. I haven't ridden in 15 years should be fun!

The special deals on the Marin Alpine Trail 29er and few others look great (I want to spend less than $1,000 to get started, and need shoes, clip ins, a few other goodies).

I am new to mountain biking. Started biking again this year after not owning a bicycle for 25 years.

1.) Where you are from? Small town, USA. Prosser,WA
2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? I'm riding 15-20 path miles a day and hit the dirt trails once a week for 20. Riding at least 6 days a week.
3.) How many bikes you own? 3 mountain bikes that I ride. 2 old CroMo Treks (800 sport and 930) and a Giant Rainier.
4.) How long have you been riding? Well, my first bike was a Schwinn Sting-ray in 1971. I rode a lot of BMX until 1979 (highschool).
5.) What forums do you frequent most? I'd say I'm a little scatter brained. I frequent forums about rocketry, beer/wine making and COD (WAW and Black Ops)

    3.) 1 for now
    4.) About 4 months
5.) Other favorite forum is tacomaworld.com. highly recommended for any Tacoma owners on here.

    1) From Azusa, CA
    2) I consider my self a novice trail rider
    3) Currently 1 bike and just got it 1 day ago
    4) I've been riding for about 3 years borrowing my friend's bike
    5) mtbr is what I visit the most

So as I mention above I just recently got my first (real) mountain bike and it's a 2011 Gaint Revel 2. I got it used but I thought it was a good deal, I paid $165 for it so now it's time to start upgrading.

    neewby checking in!

    Hi, my name is Will.
Im from Black Mountain, North Carolina.
I own one bike, its an Iron Horse PT-4 Cruiser.
I have several serious injuries, from my time in the Navy. I got out out on disability and unfortunatly Im now disabled. Im going to try to ride my bike to get in shape as a type of therapy and a way to lose weight.
I just started riding around the campground and I think this is gonna help me lose the weight I need to. I've lost about 100lbs on my diet, and I've hit the wall with diet alone. Im not able to do anything involving walking or standing or even lifting! This being disabled is for the birds! Ten years this Sept is how long Ive had these herniated disks! Six disks total; anyway I think that for road riding short distances Ill be ok. Well thats my info for now! Later Will.. P.S. Im 6' 4" and now 280lbs, instead of 382lbs!!!!!!! One day Ill be 200lbs and be happy!!

Oh heres's my bike! I'll post a better pic soon. Im really liking the sun bicycles "key west" 22' frame, it sits me up-right and looks like my sons k2 bmx bike! My LBS said I can get a new 2011 model for 399.00. I hope that the bike is worth it and that it's strong enough for a big dude like me! Im researching it and I hope to find out more about durability and such.

1.) My name is Ryan and I'm from Salem, Oregon

2.) I consider myself a weekend (and weekday) warrior! I try to get out on a 15 mile ride at least 3-4 times a week, even if I have to do it alone.

3.) Technically I own two bikes, but only one is worth riding. My 1997 GT Tequesta (all rigid!) gets me around town and the beginner trails just fine for now. I'll end up end spending way too much money upgrading it, but I just love 90's stuff so much that I don't even care. My other bike, a 90's women's Magna Glacier Point, is an emergency only bike, as in I'll likely be in the emergency room if I take it out for a ride.

4.) I've have been riding a bike in some form since I was 6 years old. I had a BMX stage during my teen years. I Used to ride a 80's GT Performer frame my dad found buried in the sand at the beach. Sold it too a lucky kid for $15 last year at a garage sale. I bought a mountain bike about 8 years ago wanting to get into the sport, but it was stolen from me the day after I bought it. Needless to say I was a little discouraged from buying another bike. Only in the past few months have I gotten back into biking, and my calves are surprisingly stronger than ever.

5.) I usually frequent the VRC forum to drool over the amazing bikes that I hope to someday own, and I visit Retrobike on occasion as well. Other than that I just try to take in as much helpful info as I can everywhere on the site!

2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? (ex: beginner, weekend warrior, all mtn/trail rider, XC racer, downhiller, singlespeeder, 29er rider, etc...) Probably an Intermediate-Weekend Warrior Trail Rider who does a Dawn Patrol or Dusk ride during the week when I can.

Add anything else you care to share.

I've lost about 60# through riding and diet over the course of the last year. Every trek out into the dirt proves more rewarding than the previous one. Riding primarily in the East Bay Regional Park system and Mt. Diablo means I climb. I climb a lot. While I'm not very fast on the ascent I do mash my way to the top and I am clearing things I never ever thought possible. I just enjoy riding. One day I may be a "single track snob" but for now I'm happy whenever rubber meets dirt.

Just trying to get my post count up so I can actually post elsewhere...

    1.) From Redmond, WA
2.) I consider myself an intermediate XC rider who likes to go somewhere and see things rather than twisty trails in greet tunnels.
3.) Have an old Cannondale Super V 700 that is just retired for a brand new 2009 Cannondale Rize 3, along with a nice Synapse 5 Carbon road bike.
4.) Off and on for years, but finally decided to get out more in 2010 to "get in shape", aka losing weight!

    First post!

I moved to Bend, OR last October and have just now discovered the wonderful mountain biking trails around here and only regret that I'd never gone out sooner. I am a runner but due to a recent injury I decided to get more into biking. I took my cyclocross bike out to some of the trails and now I'm hooked and looking to buy a mountain bike.

    1.) Bend, OR
2.) Beginner, due to lack of technical (not physical) ability.
3.) 2 (cyclocross and a cruiser, but looking to buy a mountain bike)
    4.) Off/on since 2006, but nothing serious.
5.) I frequent Reddit the most. I haven't looked around this site enough yet to say I frequent anything.

I look forward to reading and posting a lot on this site! Thanks!

First Post! Background info - did a lot of xc back in the early '90s in college, got into rock climbing and other pursuits and dropped the biking... until this past spring when I got my '95 Rockhopper (fully rigid) out and got back into it.

1.) Trussville, AL (sub. of Birmingham)
2.) Pretty much just singletrack stuff, trying to get better on the climbs.
3.) '95 Rockhopper, and just got a Felt Nine Trail (love it)
4.) Been riding regularly about three months, not counting the years from '89 - '92
5.) this forum and The Trailhead at bump.org

I will add that the switch from a rigid 26er to a hardtail 29er has been an eyeopener. I'd like to eventually convert the Rockhopper to a singlespeed.

    Hi Folks!

I'm new around here, this is my first post. I live in Maceió, Brazil. I'm starting to ride again, after ten or more years of inactivity, so I've got a brand new bike (last week) and started to hit the road again. I think I will do more of sightseeing than radical mountain biking. For now, the Scott Scale is my only bike (I think there are a couple other bikes in my parents garage, but they live too far away from here for me to check that). When I was in college, I uset to comute to the University every day. As a matter of fact, I didn't have a car then, so the bike was my transport to anywhere I wanted to go. I also play the guitar, so I hang around some guitar forums, mainly Ovation Fan Club.
It took me a while to post, because I wanted to share a nice picture, and its been raining all the week long. Only got a nice sunny day today. You know, being in the Southern Hemysphere its Winter right now. I did ride a lot in the rain, but kept my camera dry at home.

    1.) NW Arkansas
    2.) Beginner
3.) 1 old GT Backwoods All Terra
    4.) Less than 5 months
    5.) Beginner's corner

Just had my dad's old bike handed down to me and have been riding it as time allows. I'm a senior in college, majoring in chemical engineering, so I have typically had little time for hobbies. This summer and last year I should have a little more time freed up and plan to do an adventure race with my housemates and get into mountain biking a lot more. The few times I've gone on a mtb trail have really enjoyed. I want to start riding a little more frequently and plan to upgrade my bike as long as my skills and desire stay true.

Im 26 years old, married. I have no kids but two dogs. Im into cars as my main hobby, starting to get on the wifes nerves lol. My "child" is my 2002 Chevrolet Camaro SS 35th Anniversary Limited Editon. The bike hauler and wifes daily is a 2008 Nissan Xterra S (i love this thing). I work in parts at a Lincoln/Mercury/Mazda dealership. And im going to school for Business Management/Marketing.

Fuzzy camera phone pic of my bike, i havent picked it up yet (layaway). Its all the bike I could afford at the moment but I got a steal on it. Msrp was $950, they had it marked down to $850 then took off 10% for being a 2010 model. Its brand spankin new though and the service level was awesome. (The Bicycle Store, Edmond, OK). Got the bike and a Giro Rift for a little over $100 less than the original MSRP of the bike.

Edit: It wont let me post a picture yet. Fail.

    Calder here !

    I'm from Pennsylvania

I've been riding for years but just started really getting into it, I'd say I'm a beginning rider. I prefer some off road riding, but do enjoy riding road as well.

Right now I have one bike, a Surly Crosscheck which I got less than 2 years ago, which I love. I'm hoping to build a Surly troll soon for my mountain biking desires.

I've been riding my entire life, but more casually. I started getting into biking maybe 5 or 6 years ago, and then just recently started to try and and really get into it.

I most frequent tech forums. Macrumors and gizmodo are probably where I spend most of my life, but hopefully I can weave my way through this forum.

I'm 19 and in my second year of University studying Physics and Astronomy. I'm really a nerd, but I love spending my time outdoors biking, camping, hiking, and just doing whatever. Can't wait to meet people on this forum as it looks like a great group of people!

Hi, my name is Don and I'm from NE Tennessee.

I’ve been riding about10 Years. I'm an intermediate weekend warrior doing mostly mtn trail rides. I love the climbs because they usually lead to sceamin’ downhills.

So I own 4 bikes. I started out with couple of Specialized Hardrock Pro which I rode for a while then switched to a Cannondale F800 for XC riding. Now I have a Specialized Stumpy S-Works whick I use for attacking the trails around TN and NC. I also have a 2008 Kona Dawg Deluxe which I am slowly re-building.

I check out the forum on mtbr. That’s mostly it. I thought I’d start to contribute to mtbr since I’ve enjoyed the forums and product reviews for years.

This first pic below is from a recent trip to Montanna on a ride up Sentinnal mnt. The second is from a XC ride in NE NC a few years ago. Enjoy!

    'ello all!

I used to be ElvisHitler in a former life, but transmogrified into Slackadaisical, by a supreme effort of will.

This change was due to the swear filter rejecting my name when trying to post a review.

I will do my best to contribute to the site by posting product reviews.

However, realistically I suspect that I will again post once every six months, if I find the energy. In the meantime I will continue to lurk.

It could be your thread/post/pictures etc. that I am perusing.

    You just don't know.

I'm Jason...I ride on the dirt and the road...definitely like mountain biking the best, but not always easy to gear up and drive to the trails...the road bike keeps me riding between trips to the woods. I ride Marrington in Charleston and Harbison in Columbia more than any other trails.

1.) Where you are from? Charleston, SC

2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? XC

3.) How many bikes you own?
    3 bikes-
2004 Jamis Durango with few original parts
    2005 Specialized Allez Elite
Beach Cruiser...gotta have one on the coast.

4.) How long have you been riding?
Riding my whole life for fun, but started riding distance for fitness in 2002 after screwing up my knee snowboarding.

I see that a considerable number of the denizens on this site own more than one bike.

I only own one, but am worried that I am trending towards fat bastard.

So either another bike is warranted or the need ride more is.

Only the bank account knows for sure.

    I will consult it....

    New to forum, old biker

I've been riding cross- country and all mountain for 15 years now.
I began riding on the "National Trail" at South Mountain in Phoenix, AZ.
I'm on my 6'th bike and my second Santa Cruz Heckler wich I have built up with all my favorites.
    I recently purchased a new 2011 Fox Float 36 RC2/Fit.
When I received the fork from "Bike Bling" it was over-inflated to 135 psi. There was actually 180mm of stanchion showing on my 160mm fork. I removed the air, collapsed the fork and re-inflated to 75 psi which is below my recommended weight pressure. The fork returns to 180mm no matter what I do. The fork feels fine and Fox tells me there is no issue. Front end may sit about an inch higher than I want but im not really sure?

Im very new to mountian biking and bikes in general. Stated going out a few months ago with a friend who had an extra bike and i recently got a bike of my own. Found a 2004 Iron Horse Hollowpoint Sport on craigslist for $450. It looks to have never been ridden except for some scratches from storage.

So far Ive taken it out on 2 local trails and its been awesome. love biking so far. just hate peddaling uphill because im terribly out of shape and lazy.

I want to post some pictures but i need to have 10 posts, so 1 down, 9 to go.

Looking for advice on a 29er made for a big dude

I have been riding a Kona Dawg Dee-Lux for 7 years and its withheld my 6'3" 245lbs of beating year over year. I am ready for a new bike and looking for some advise on which bike might be a great fit for me. Rocky Mountain, Yeti and Kona have all been recommended.

Anyone know of a bike that is made for a big rider?

    Brad from Ventura saying hello.*

2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself?*
    XC rider all the way.*

3.) How many bikes you own?
At the moment just one, a Felt F55 road bike. A Cannondale Flash 3 Carbon 29er is in my very near future.*

4.) How long have you been riding?
Been riding all my life. Was into MTB in the early and mid 90's. Got away from it and started on the road. I'm ready for some dirt again.*

My fiancé and I are gearing up for the trails. I am tuning up her Mom's 1993 Merlin hardtail to get her started. She mentioned her mom had a "old mountain bike" she didn't use anymore. Let's just say I was surprised when I discovered a Merlin frame, XT group, Mavic tubless wheel set. I rebuilt the Manitou 2 fork, pulled apart the gummed up shifters.
With some new cables and housings it will be good to go.

Hi, my name is Woodroce. I tried to start a thread, but I can't do that because I haven't put up five posts yet.

    1.) Where you are from?

I am from the Finger Lakes Region of upstate NY.

2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself?

I have been riding bicycles all my life, but I am a beginner.

3.) How many bikes you own?

Only one junky bike for now.

4.) How long have you been riding?

Since I was five, but I took about 20 years off there in the middle.

5.) What forums do you frequent most?

I haven't been here long enough to frequent any forums. However, I am part of many online forums, including:

    rimfirecentral

    iceshanty

    elementownersclub

(I tried to post links, but I can't do that until I have 10 posts! Chh!)

I grew up on a bicycle. When I was in my twenties, I bought a GT Timberline Mountain Bike that I thought was the greatest bike in the world. I rode it a lot and enjoyed off-road riding whenever I had the chance. I ended up selling it when I moved out of state.

Back in May of this year, I bought my wife a Trek Skye S for her birthday. I had no bike. Fortunately, my mom was given an old Mountain Bike that she gave to me, that I now ride with my wife and my five-year-old daughter. But, when I get on my wife's bike, it's a completely different bike than the junk that I am riding. So, I have been saving for a Mountain Bike for me.

Deciding which bike to buy has been an arduous process. I want to buy a Trek so that we all have Trek bikes. I was going to buy a Trek 4300, but didn't like what I was reading about the mechanical disc brakes. So, then I was set on buying the new 2012 Trek 4500. But, all this waiting gives me more time for more research and I am thinking that I like the Shimano Deore drive train over the Alivio, so I am waiting for the 2012 Trek 6000 to become available. It's the limit of my price range. It comes in colors that will match my wife's bike nicely, too.

It's hard to not make the jump to full suspension after spending some time in here looking around. But, I just can't afford it. I think that the Trek 6000 will be plenty of bike for me anyway. Most of the time I will be riding with my wife and daughter, so it's not like I am going to be pushing my limits too often.

I like to read in forums. I seek to learn from like-minded people. It's good to be here, and hopefully it will get better once I am allowed to post and put up links and pictures. But, making people post five times before they can start a thread doesn't make these people any smarter! Making me wait until I have posted 10 times before I can post a link or a picture? I don't get it.

Keep it rubber-side down and I will see you around!

    -Woodroce

New guy here. 44 years old, and have just started riding again after a 15 year break. Was addicted to XC in the early-mid nineties, and raced beginner/sport/expert. Remember when RS Judy elastomer/oil cartridge was the end all be all shock. Race face cranks, v-brakes, and Conti Navigators were the fast tires. Everyone who was anyone had their wheels built with multi color nipples. Times have certainly changed, as I just picked a Marin 29r and am starting to ride again regularly. Never saw 29r's coming, thats for sure. This forum is loaded with info, and I am glad to be here. Thanks for having me.

    Hi all,

I'm from: Lower Arkansas, Zone 12.
I ride: The old oil and timber roads, and occasionally older highways. Anything my bike can handle, and I'm ready to build up a bike that can handle more!
How many bikes? A good handful. Schwinn middleweight cantilevers, cycle trucks, a Twinn, a couple of older road bikes, and a Cannondale touring bike (my daily ride).
I've ridden cruisers regularly since '09, I bought the touring bike this spring.

Hey all, I'm a newbie from Houston, Tx. I just got into trail riding not too long ago. After having two el cheapos, I figured it was time to get a good bike, so I just bought a Jamis 650 B1 (which I haven't even gotten to ride yet because I'm working in the Gulf of Thailand area at the moment, c'mon Tuesday!). I joined and have found a plethora of info on here and spend most of my time just reading the Jamis and 650b forums to try and learn as much as I can. Thanks for the great site, keep up the good work!

Hello all. My name is Chris but go by Spoonykiller. I am an avid hunter and I got that name for shooting spoonbill ducks. Their real name is GREAT NORTHERN SHOVELER. They aren't a good duck to eat so we try to not shoot them, but one season I could not shoot any other type for some reason LOL. I live in Winters CA, which is 13 miles due West of Davis CA. It is a bike friendly town and we have a nice bike shop called Velo - City.

Right now I ride a cheap Mongoose XR75 for physical therapy, due to a motorcycle accident. I used to own a 1997 Schwinn Homegrown hardtail with Shimano XT equipment. I have been riding since 1978, but have been off of bicycles for about 6 years now. I also LOVE motor cycles. I own a 2006 LIME GREEN KAWASAKI KLR 650; which I have to rebuild due to a hundred pound rock falling on it and me as I was riding it. I am on klr650.net everyday. My name there is also Spoonykiller. a lot of the guys there also ride bicycles.

I am a welder/fabricator by trade , and I worked for Anodizing Incorporated from 1996 to 1998. I have built hundreds of bike frames for Schwinn, Specialized,Santa Cruz, Rocky Mountain, and Soft Ride. I built the very first Specialized Stump Jumper XSR frame. I have built thousands of stems for all of the previously mentioned companies.
My Home Grown that I had I built completely myself. I welded the frame and stem myself. it was and is my favorite bike I have ever owned. I hope the person who stole it; has had as much fun on it as I did over the 5 years I had it.

    Spoonykiller

I tried to post pics of me and my XR75 , but I'm still a no0b here.

I'm from Michigan. I got into mountain biking through friends I met at school.

I'm riding a 2001 K2 Attack. It's pretty worn out, but being a broke college student, I hope to ride it until I can afford something better.

    Have a good ride.

Whew... you guys know how to make someone work just to introduce themselves!

    1.) Where you are from?
Currently stationed at MCRD Parris Island with the Marine Corps in Beaufort, SC!

2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself?
A very inexperienced one who desperately wants to become better. Typically I ride locally which is singletracks and mostly flat terrain. Heading up to NC to ride the Pirahna pit this weekend though!

3.) How many bikes you own?
    Just one... my baby

4.) How long have you been riding?
Three months... Started off on a Giant Revel 2 thinking Mountain Biking sounded like a great time but had no idea how quickly I'd want to upgrade. Literally had my Revel for 2.5 months and had to sell it because I wanted 29er and disc brakes. Picked up my new ride today; 2012 Giant Talon 29er

5.) What forums do you frequent most?
    This one.

    PICS!

    Newbie here

First post here, just signed up, Living in Midwest, Indiana, I guess you could call me a weekend warrior. I have 3 bikes but my pride and joy is my new (old) Turner 5 Spot. It is my first FS bike coming from a Kona Hoss Hardtail it is quite a change. I signed up because I was looking for info on the Turners and you can't do a search unless you are a member. I race XC in the Dino series here in Indiana in the Clydesdale class so it is mostly for the fun of it. We have some great trails here in Indiana but someday would love to make out to the West coast and do some riding. Been riding Mountain bikes for about 20 yrs, started out on a green Fuji Discovery that I still have and kick around on in the street with the wife and make runs to the grocery with when I attach my BOB trailer to it. Looking forward to learning more here as I am my own mechanic and do all my own work.

    Greetings

    Hey all,
Just started using this forum as a resource as I decided to start fixing my bike myself. I basically know very little about bike and their parts, but I'm extremely handy and mechanically inclined.
As of now I am attempting to replace my bottom bracket. Yup, jumping right in with both feet.

    Old lady

    Hi all,

    Nice to be here...

I´m a never grown up 37 year old woman living in the foothills of the sierra nevada in spain. Many moons ago I was an avid BMX girl, racing most weekends, until my Mum took me out of the sport deeming it too dangerous (worries about my poor wrists and knees).

But for many years I have yearned to get back into the saddle and have started to do so with my son who is 14, but he´s not that interested in it to be honest.

Anyway, I have an old cheap hardtail claud butler stone river at the moment, and wanted to pass that on to my son and get something that I could ride. The trails here are quite steep and really rocky and on claud I keep loosing grip on the rear tyre, going downhill is ok but the same happens there too...

I have no cash flow at the mo and have been looking at some cheap replacements and wanted some advice

    which bike should I choose?

I have been look at a Gotty Via hardtail and a Nordic fs bike .. both a similar price but which one should I go for?

really a story of hardtail v fs..

I would love some advice.. so please help me out here!!!

    Ta

Laugh all you want, I just bought an old rigid GT Pantera for $45. I used to have one of these growing up and loved it. Figured I'd upgrade some parts and ride the hell out of it until I can afford something nice. Just getting back into riding now that I am divorced!

    1.) Where you are from?
The Hague, the Netherlands. Not many mountains here but you can ride everywhere!

2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself?
With growing up kids and a busy job I prosper every moment I am able to ride my bike. Those are rare moments I hardly have time for, so usually I ride out of my house into the dunes (I live near the sea) or on one of the local mountainbike tracks here in the western part of the Netherlands.

3.) How many bikes you own?
One old KHS hardtail mountainbike, a Rocky Mountain Blizzard that is to be completed, and two typical Dutch city bikes.

4.) How long have you been riding?
    Since 1990, with some breaks.

5.) What forums do you frequent most?
This one and a local Dutch forum: mountainbike.nl

    Hi everybody!

    Hi everybody!

1.) Where you are from? (as specific as you care to share)

I live in Germany/Europe and my wife and me are looking forward to do some cycling in the U.S.

2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? (ex: beginner, weekend warrior, all mtn/trail rider, XC racer, downhiller, singlespeeder, 29er rider, etc...)

We did quite a lot of self supported rides in different countries such as Turkey, India, Oman, Canada and different european countries

3.) How many bikes you own?

My wife and me in total have 8 bikes (road bikes, MTBs, bikes for the every day use and so on...)

4.) How long have you been riding?

Since we met 13 years ago we do rides almost every summer vacation in different countries

5.) What forums do you frequent most? (either here or on other sites)

I just registered to this forum today because we are planning a biketrip to the Northwest of the U.S.

We thought of following the ACAs Sierra Cascades Bicycle Route

We fly into Vancouver, B.C. and will spend 5 weeks on our bikes. We were thinking of not just following the route above (which is just on paved roads). Instead it would be nice, to have some offroad sections on the way. Because we don't have a car we don't want to make any loops (without a car there is no need to go back to the carpark, ey?) but instead go from A to B on some nice trails in the area.

    Any help ist very welcome!

I think it's really stupid that you have to post 5 times before you can start a thread.

All I want to do is post a serious warning about a bike scammer, but because of the 5 post rule I have to post this message.

Thanks for wanting to post a scammer warning. Once you hit the 5 limit, this is probably the best forum to post that in: Site Info/Feedback forum: http://forums.mtbr.com/forumdisplay.php?f=23

We have incorporated the 5 post count minimum to combat spammers and it works really well. Yeah, it's more hoops for newbies to jump through, but with the spam problem as bad as it is, it is a trade-off we have to make.

I bought a gt avalanche 3.0 this year and have abused it sensless I just replaced the fork with a bomber all mtn 2 and bought two offset wheel the front a used maxvic cross crountry and a custom built wheel from a lbs for the rear.
I have fallen in love with mtn biking and have been using this sites information to both buy my first hardtail and well as get great reviews, information, and insight. Iam glad to be apart of this great community and website.

    Hows it going?
I'm Kyle from Bangor, Maine..originally for good ol Atlanta Ga.
I haven't been on a bike in years but I plan to start once I get my new bike in a week or so
Im just getting a new Cannondale Trail SL2. Pretty cheap at ski rack sports here. $500 so I'm pleased.
I ridden on and off. No big trails or anything. So I plan to ride Bangor City Forrest. Apparently it's good for everyone, and has many trails.
And I haven't used a forum in a long time, used to be on importatlanta. But ill be here from now on. Maybe I'll meet some people from around my area on here.

You know, I can't believe I've been visiting this site for 15 years, and never bothered to register in the forums section.. I always read reviews here, but never really contributed in a decade and a half (or maybe I did register in the beginning, but it got purged).. So, here's the scoop.

    1.) Where you are from?
    Maryland, now in Southern California!

2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself?
    Advanced FR, AM.

3.) How many bikes you own?
    Just one.

4.) How long have you been riding?
    Oooh, 17 years.

5.) What forums do you frequent most?
Heh.. Well, PG-13 ones? I lurk a lot because I'm super busy usually, and don't necessarily have anything to contribute at times. And I use the search function a lot on other sites, so I don't really ask unless there's something really vague. But here they are:
    stackoverflow.com
    anddev.org
    vfxtalk.com

Over the years, bikes I've had include:
1994 Cro-Moly GIANT from REI (sold)
1997 A Carbon Fiber hardtail (can't remember the Brand) with aftermarket gear (destroyed on the North Shore)
2000 GT STS-XCR 1000 CF Full-Suspension with aftermarket gear (failure of bottom tube)
2011 Cove Stiffee with custom components

Trails? I did the Patapsco trails near Baltimore in my formative days, and matured on the BC North Shore with bigger drops, wetter environment, and ramps and stunts! There's nothing here in Los Angeles like it was up there that I've found yet.

New to the forum and just wanted to say hello. I am trying to decide on a beginner mountain bike for under $600. I am thinking about a Cannondale SL 4, Specialized Hardrock, or Cannondale Trail 6. I was just wanting some opinions on what is the best between these 3. Any other suggestions are welcome.

    Greetings from Bungholio!

    1.) Where you are from?
Currently living in Western Washington, Seattle Area. Tired of the gray though. There are a lot of riding opportunities here but I would like to explore other (drier) areas too.

2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself?
I was a road racer years ago and have enjoyed the outdoor challenges of riding the trails since.

3.) How many bikes you own?
I've pared down the stable. I have sold my road bike and converted my single speed Santa Cruz Chameleon back to 3X9 and gave it to my son. My only bike now is a Santa Cruz Superlight, but my interests are transitioning from longer cross country rides to more of the single track and challenges of getting through some of the more technical trails with rocks, roots and manmade features.

4.) How long have you been riding?
A very long time. Decades. But always looking for new and exciting challenges.

    intro

    1.) Where you are from?
Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. I am of a polish heritage and frequently visit the country, to which terrible roads and off road paths have become a passion of mine.
2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself?
I'm an avid biker, with no specific designation. I guess my most frequented endeavor would be central park as its just convenient to do a few spans after work. Quiet, peaceful, with a small amount of exertion.
3.) How many bikes you own?
Currently two. I am in possession of an older Fuji boulevard on which the rear derailleur is no longer able to keep the chain from jumping about so i have to resort to using a bike simply labeled "hill climber" i found in the basement. Being a comfort bike, its surprisingly resilient and hasn't quit me yet. Unfortunately, it doesn't fit my needs any longer and i find myself having to upgrade.
4.) How long have you been riding?
Ive been riding since i was atleast 5, i remember teaching myself how to maintain balance without training wheels all to when my first huffy got stolen.
5.) What forums do you frequent most?
Bike related, this is the only source i find remotely interesting. I hope that after spending enough time here i will find the bike im looking for.

Ahhh Brasil! How i'd love to go back and ride in those trails !
I'm from Sao Paulo by the way !

    1) I live in the great state of NJ as a transplant. There are nice trails and places here, but when I was really riding I was out in the Northwest, in Washington state
    2) I am a former rider hoping to come back.
    3) Sold my old bike, so Zero!
    4) I was riding seriously from 1987-1993, then gap. Rode as commute from 1994-1999. Since then, I've only dabbled.
    5) Car forums, Audio forums, Torrent forums. If you care which, ask me and I'll verify or specify.

My goal is to start street/light trail training in the fall, with a new bike.... After that, I hope to do some serious trail paths, even if I do it relatively slowly.

    Hello all!

Hi, I live on Whidbey Island, Washington. My name is Tony and I'm continually trying to get my fat ass in shape.

I ride all rigid, no damn shocks anywhere near my rides. From my 86 Stumpie Sport to my 89 Team, and my Ibis, I ride old school to date(July 2011). I prefer XC stuff, with long fire road climbs like St. John's Mtn. near Willows, Ca or Captain Point located west of Stevens Pass, Wa.

I've been riding since approximately 1986.

as for forums, I'm kind of new to the cycling ones, I don't know why I didn't get clued in earlier!
Good friction shifting is getting hard to find nowadays....
