Knee injury sufferers - fluid on your knee after impact

Ok, my GP referred me for a XRay- cameback clear for fractures but the patella took a fair knock and my knee is still black and swollen from fluid under the knee cap and around the area.

Anyone experienced this? How long before you started exercising your knee(s) again? Any recommendations apart from anti-inflammatories ...and just rest?

I am worried about causing other issues etc (tendinitis?)

I had something like this once, the doctor just drained the fluid with a syringe, and I went out for a ride a day or two later (if not on the same day, I don't remember exactly). It all took a few minutes. No medications were needed, and there were no complications I am aware of.

I'm no doctor but in general discomfort is OK, pain in not. If it hurts, it's not ready. BTW I fractured my patella but I didn't have much swelling and I couldn't move it anyway.

You're a fracking nutcase (and my new hero ).
I took a hard slam on my knee about 9 months ago and did some damage to the bursa...knee got HUGE and have had it drained a couple of times (what came out was a LOT more bloody looking than FP's fountain). It still has some residual fluid but is going away slowly but surely. Ice and compression and if it doesn't hurt, GO RIDE! When at it's tightest, my knee felt much better after a ride.
