    Howd I do that?

About 6 months ago, I was riding a junk walmart hardtail that I had "Built up" with Deore LX shifters, Avid V brakes, Weinman 519 rims, and a Shimano low end crank. With the crappiest fork that ever hit the ground. Plus the frame was a size too big.
(I got all of those parts combined for under $20)

My friend at the time was running a stock Walmart Schwinn. Its was a dual suspension.

When we would ride trails, I could "keep up" as in I didnt fall behind too much, and I jumped that thing far beyond what walmart wanted it to do. On the road, we were abotu even.

Now, we both have much nicer DS rigs (Schwinn Moab DS3) and now I can whip his ass on the trail. Theres almost no competition.

Did my old hardtail teach me that much about "finess" and that?

Starting on a hardtail is a great idea. You develop a lot more skill in picking lines and such. In terms of fitness, i'll assume your bud's Schwinn was not too efficient, so i don't think that that was necissarily what put him ahead before. Although i'm sure he could downhill faster. As to why you are a better rider now, it may be part bike history, but maybe, you are just a better rider. Don't let it go to your head though
