How to Prevent the Middle Finger Salute?

I have to do a fair bit of road riding to get to my local trail. This is on hilly, country roads, and there are some potentially dangerous spots for cyclists.

In general, drivers are great here, and often go out of their way to leave you space, or let you go ahead at an intersection. Great!

When this happens, I like to thank the driver with a quick wave, i.e. "hey driver dude, thanks for leaving a good amount of space, I appreciate it!" However, half the time they mistake my "happy wave" for an "angry wave" or "sarcastic wave" and I get the finger.

I've tried a few variations of the wave without success:
-the "thumbs up" seems to come across as extra sarcastic, and generates a lot of middle fingers
-a slight wave (like motorcyclists do to each other) doesn't seem to get noticed
-a "slow wave" a.k.a. "the Queen of England wave" just seems ridiculous

    Ideas?

just give them the finger first... no misunderstanding.... just kidding.

I just give the spread 5, couple shakes, just off to the side of the hoods... but only if they've had to wait for oncoming cars, to make a safe pass.... I show my appreciation. I don't see how it could be misinterpreted.

actually the thumbs up gesture is a bad sign in some cultures. Generally a good salute would be alright. Just make sure you don't salute from the bottom of you chin.

Just hold up your hand without waving it. I think the waving is what makes the gesture look sarcastic.

I do the head nod and motorcycle salute combo. If windows are down (a rarity these days) I verbalize as well.

Just ride, no need to wave because they didn't run
you over or off the road.

I like to just smile and give the "half ass" wave as I call it. I just barely lift my hand off the bars. If their really looking they'll see it but most times their not. The smile is the most important part and I think making good eye contact is key.

Good outcome. Head nod, or wave.

Bad outcome. Dry hump the crap out of your TT or seat. Really get into it to show your displeasure.
