Flip the Switch: Ride EVERY DAY January

Iím going to be doing the 30 day no booze challenge but on top of that, here is a better challenge:

RIDE EVERY DAY OF JANUARY CHALLENGE!

The only acceptable response is each day you post a picture of your STRAVA (or other tracking software). SOMETHING like:

No explanation needed, though a comment appreciated. Do it for 31 days in a row! Minimum distance 3 miles. And go!!!!!

Iím in... the Return to Earth 30 day Challenge last July was cool...since it used Trailforks only mapped trails counted, no road, so on days it rained you still needed trails, gravel or whatever...

Sounds like a fun personal challenge; trails in our part of the country are almost totally saturated, and rain would lead to significant damage.

Yeah I wouldnít go so far as to say must be on Trailforks and/or no road. Think more of a ride your bike every day. I donít care where you ride, itís winter!

Did some DH laps. Was a good time albeit still a little muddy and wet. I took the fat back to do some trail ďgroomingĒ:

Trails were icy in many places, but it was still a ton of fun!

As much as Iíd like to participate in this, itís regularly -30 degrees F here all through January, and we receive several feet of snow.

I was lucky today that there wasnít much snow and it was 38 degrees. I rode 3.5 miles with ~1300í of elevation gain.

Trails around me are slop city, because we've either been in freeze/thaw or it's raining. Kinda how winter goes too often around here. Got 30 road miles in yesterday, but I've developed a pain on outside of knee (IT band?) that goes away and then comes back if I bike more than ~15 miles. So I don't think January looks good for me. I'll live vicariously through y'all.

I had a hard crash a month ago and the one sore spot flared up again today. But I just muscled through it. Tomorrow may be the last trail day I have for a few days. With vacation time this week, Iíve definitely pushed harder.

I already missed one day, but I'm going to keep posting here to keep myself accountable.
I took a bunch of cold medicine and ventured out at 5:30am this morning in 20įF temps to make sure the trails were frozen solid.

Haha I love it, FTS it is! Was super psyched to ride and ended up doing more hills than I wanted but it was a stellar morning for a ride and landed a Top 3 spot on the Dragon DH which is getting pretty frickin scary given how fast you have to go now on some steep technical turns! Holy mother of run on sentences!!!

Thanks! I won't be having surgery but hopefully that offset will join together and the gap at the AC joint will come back together. I've got good range of motion and just started working with resistance with the PT.

Back at it, and may be able to complete the challenge for the rest of the month, albeit mostly on road and a local CX course that's actually at a seminary. If I'm successful, 28/31 ain't bad. I raised my seat a bit and moved it forward, which helped in not agitating my knee anymore, but it's still not 100%. I didn't think this would help, but realized I had taken my bike apart and really cleaned it before a 60 mile loaded gravel ride and the seat was probably set too low for that ride, which really wasn't good.

Did 13.5 miles with the wife yesterday, mostly around the park, but tricked her into a couple steeper hills around the neighborhood. When she realized this was happening she said "I hate you". Heh.

Got out early today while things were still frozen. Some of the downhill sections were little more than a controlled skid on the ice. Seriously considering studded tires. The air temperature was pretty close to freezing, but the 30+mph winds made it feel colder where the ridge or the forest didn't provide shelter.

Dedication Sgltrak! Us Cali guys have it pretty easy for sure when it comes to the weather. After the easier day yesterday, the legs felt pretty good. Did a short lap on the hill and checked out one of the DH sections that I knew would be messed up, and it was. Bummer! Oh well, still managed to snag a KOM so must've been riding decent

Flip the Switch: Ride EVERY DAY January

All this riding is paying off. Glad I signed on to do this. I didnít go very far or long today, but I had one of my strongest climbs yet. Gained 1675 feet in 1.7 miles, well most of that was in about 1 mile really. I think by the end of the month Iíll do the whole 5 miles one way of that trail. Although I may need new brakes for the downhill lol.

Pic from the top where I turned around.

70* today, it was too hot for long sleeves so shorts and t-shirt had to do.

Am on an roll now. 9+ miles of hooliganism in the park, cruising and using the decorative rocks around water features like rock gardens to pick around and choose lines. Pretty good chance, but I'll try not to break form tomorrow. I'm working a prescribed burn and may have to work late or just might have a lot of soot to hack up, dunno yet.

ok lads.. I'm 50 years old I made it awhile I couldn't ride yesterday.. it was windy af around here and my back / legs hurt .. I tried to ride today (had ridden everyday since dec 29th until yesterday).. it isn't far my legs were still grumping.. but I'm going to get as close as I can to everyday..

Flip the Switch: Ride EVERY DAY January-ride_1_7.png

couple pr's however despite leg pains.. my weight has FINALLY dropped a little before the 2yr yoyoing between 265~275... that is right down to an impressive~ ???? 263.. whatever.. I'll take it because it hasn't happened in 2yrs..so give me this one I'm 6'3" I've been riding and trying to watch the diet so I'm hopping to keep the weight coming down.. if I could get back to 225~ of something I'd be pretty stoked.

Got my ride in, late but made it. Longer than I wanted, my legs are feeling it.

Played softball last night so the running on top of riding my legs are feeling it. But I pushed through and got a short ride around the neighborhood in.

Here representing the Mid-Atlantic states, Iím at the corner of DE, MD, PA with NJ a 20 min drive. Trails a little moist this evening after freeze-thaw with rain and snow showers. Low of 22 tonight then warming over a couple days to a low of 60 on Sat, WTF!

A low of 60? That's crazy! I've had good weather here in mid-Missouri, trying to take advantage of it while I can.

Did 8mi with friends out to a mexican restaurant and back yesterday. Today I finally got some singletrack in, using 18mi of roads to link up 17mi of trail.

Great job to all who are still going! A 15 hour work day yesterday and a 10 hour work day today followed by a 3 hour land manager meeting kept me off the bike. Tomorrow my daughter is taking me skiing, so it looks like the bike will sit a 3rd day.

No worries man, I failed yesterday as well. Between work and life, and I think my legs, I couldn't get to ride. I'm hoping today I can, there are lots of clouds and a mist now that I walked the dog. If stays dry or at least at this level, I'm jumping back on my bike today, at some point. No work meetings as of 9:15a PST

Raining here today, so I will be riding my "Rainy Day Loop" which is a mix of streets, fire roads, paved bike paths, gravel bikepaths, and just a smidgen of singletrack that holds up to rain well. Pretty lucky to have to option to ride it to be honest! Now just finish up some work so I can get out there ...

Once you believe itís all frozen, you learn it is Not... forecast has changed for the better, what was a potential 5+ days of wet weather now should be only Sun and Tues... highs of 50-60 deg through mid next week!

No bike ride today. Back to the bike tomorrow. 25 degrees Farenheit should feel quite warm.

High temperature today was 12F. Maximum elevation was 12,173'.

Yeah the weather here has been crazy amenable. I'm sure y'all are getting the same predicted 4" of rain we're getting right now, though. What trail was this, btw? Not familiar with the trails that way, but if I'm passing through I'd like to keep my options open.

Also I've been doing an absolute shit job. Sort of in a mental rut lately and not feeling motivated to do anything when I get home. In time, though.

Back on the bike today. Good thing I have crazy friends, because my motivation to ride solo at 5:30am in 23įF temperatures is pretty low.

Yeah it was dumping last night. I rode the trails at Binder Lake then hit Frog Hollow on the way home. Binder has about 15mi broken up into 4 loops and Frog Hollow is another loop in town just shy of 3mi...my favorite but it takes a little figuring out.

I really hate my Ionic. Fitbit sent me a new one after their update killed my old one. The new one stops itself and kills activities randomly. Super annoying and I have turned off all "Auto-detect" options. It shouldn't be doing it

Oh well, I was able to stitch two different files together to show my ride though it robs me of some distance, oh well! FTS #14 (45%) done!

So whoís on FTS 15? Pretty much ~half way, woot woot! I had to get my truck smoged so dropped it off and did a 3 mile pedal on the road to a start of a popular climb. The DH can be good but it gets ****ed up by the cows pretty bad. It was actually holding up pretty well! Snagged a KOM so I canít be doing that bad on day 15!

Ride bike paths. One of the most valuable days of riding I ever did was workout a rainy day loop. I weaved in streets, paved bike paths, gravel frontage roads to, dg bike paths, to actual single track that holds up to rain well and out of the local "real" systems. One of my favorite parts of my loop is a small park that I ride for skills, concrete skinnies, tight corners around a water fountain, etc.

Worse comes to worse, ride the roads. I said 3+ period. Don't matter if its asphalt or hero dirt. It's all about getting out there to ride. I can tell you I am really starting to feel the good all this riding is doing. My legs feel strong and I've lost a bit of weight as well. I'll be doing this every year from here on out as a way to ensure I am staying active even when its rainy!

Rains sucks but still got in a good ride with friends!

Flip the Switch: Ride EVERY DAY January-6d7f4fef-14a9-43ef-a860-0d6ec0637886.jpeg

To fulfill the request above, if itís rainy / muddy Iíll ride my Farley EX 8 in either 29x3.0Ē if conditions are wet but not terrible or 27.5x3.8Ē if I know itís going to be super sloppy.

Today was 29x3.0 and the right call. Most of the trail sections were in pretty good shape. I didnít wash my bike after yesterdayís ride, and glad I didnít, it was wet enough today my bike was almost clean when we got back!

Flip the Switch: Ride EVERY DAY January-7ddb0b82-cdaf-4236-b880-d6e5a41402d1.jpg

Of course it frickiní POURED during the ride. Within a few minutes ... blue skies, lol. But itís already raining again so didnít matter.

If you are on track, you are 52% done! Itís all DH from here!

a very mellow~ish ride today from my home to the park down the road and then to the park (bike park) up the road and back down to another park and them home... I rode the beginner line at the bike park a couple times (it is rather short). 9.8 miles in all.

as someone mentioned this previously a bit about my bike.. It is a 2018 Trance Advance 2 (XL) w/ SLX drive train / brakes / Giant branded TRX 1 wheelset (carbon) / Maxxis DHF 2.6 front / Aggressor 2.5 rear / Deity Highside 50mm riser / knuckleduster grips and a WTB Volt saddle .. I had this bike on loan for some time and subsequently got the bike for a very good price to become my own bike..

As kitted the bike weights 29.6lbs which is pretty good.. the main thing is the rider weight atm sadly, I'm 50yrs old 6'3" and tipping the scales at 265lbs (120~kg) ... I have rode all but 2 days this month and have been attempting to mind my diet a bit more... losing weight has proved annoyingly difficult however.

Flip the Switch: Ride EVERY DAY January

    FTS 12

I fell off pace severely this week. I didnít have much time today, but decided to get in a climb at the local trail. Technical climbing is a weak point that I really want to improve.

Now a picture of my bike from the top.

    Life... do damn cold anyway...

    If I miss a day, may I use 12/31 as a floater?

Below is my Ď14 Stache Frankenbike. After my Ď15 Zaskar 9r passed away I needed a frame to put the upgrades I had bought so told my Bride needed to build it for her so she can ride gravel flats with me. Purchased the frame, fork, brakes, rear wheel, cassette, crank from a great guy in Cali(free, only asked me for shipping costs). Put on 40mm Spank stem, 80mm Deity Highside bar, Manitou Minute Pro 120, Thudbuster LT seatpost, M6000 brakes, XT shifter/derailleur, 11-42t cassette, RF 30t crank and Slacker Puck to raise front another 15mm. Have 3 wheel sets with tires ranging from 2.1 XC through 2.5 All Mountain. Thing is a rocket with XC on it, pedals effortlessly.

today's ride.. quite good fun had the bike park jump-lines to myself which is SUPER because I don't have to feel bad when 6yr olds are better than me on them =p

Meant to mention earlier regarding for love of the trail, craziest Iíve seen is a dude in his sweet 2 seat convertible Porsche heading to the trail with his FS bitch gracefully extending out of the passenger seat with front tire gently resting on the deck behind the seat. Wish I got a photo of That!

Atarione, curious considering the topography of your map, how the hell is that 9mi ride only 600 vertical, Is it only one way???

I'm not sure how strava says it was only 600~ vertical it sure felt like more than that =p it was not a one way run... I went out about 4.5 miles of climbing and back about 4.5 miles of descent.. I honestly think strava is wrong about the elevation gain?

Couple years ago I did a month of biking and one beer a day. I was pretty worn out and beat up by the end. I think it took a month off biking and drinking to get over it.

If youíre done with FTS 24, you are within one week of being done! Good job to all on track and to those doing as much as they can! I can tell you this is by far the most I have ever MTBíd in a month. Itís easy to get these miles on the road, but it looks like I will crack 300 MTB miles in January!

I better be a rockstar climber in February

ok... so today I did two separate rides 1 make up ride for a day I missed due to heavy rains / wind?

Flip the Switch: Ride EVERY DAY January-fts_124.png

as of 1/24 I have 132.5 miles that are basically all mtb miles (few miles of gravel in there here and there). it may not seem like a huge number of miles but last year i was ~70miles a month pretty consistently.

To date Iíve got 139 mi. For the daily challenge I completed in July I had tacked on Trek mileage and Strava climbing challenges. My total was 270mi of singletrack and 25000ft of elevation.

Atarione you actually redacted your name... yea I hid mine but wonít goin forward, welcome to follow since you me challenge broís. Found when you follow someone on PinkBike you get their Trailforks activity in your dashboard. Started following Ben Cathro and see his ridelog...kewl

FTS 25: Cruising with the kids. I call them kids but theyíre 18 & 19 respectively, lol. Was just what the doctor ordered. A nice XCíish ride with some sessionable features and just cruiser fun singletrack. Had to dodge quite a few hikers, but I expected that!

The weather and illness only allowed me 2 rides between the 7th and the 18th, but I flipped the switch on the 19th and have been out every day since. Trail conditions are still not ideal, with lots of ice and mud, but they are improving.

I am sitting at 240 miles and just shy of 25,000' climbed in 14 rides so far for January. Of those 240 miles, 150 have been trail miles and the other 90 have been riding to and from trails and linking trail systems in search of rideable dirt.

While I haven't ridden every day this month, I have set a PR for number of rides in January. It's been unseasonably warm this month (25-35 degrees F, average), and very little snow, so the trails close to my house have been rideable (packed snow that isn't 2 feet deep on either side of the path). I've done 10 rides, totaling 40 miles, and 10,000 feet of climbing so far, lol. By far the most vert I've ever done in January.

The skiers are whining and complaining like you wouldn't believe. I'm thinking "finally, a winter I can get behind."

Surpassed 25,000' for the month on this evening's ride. Should be able to Everest this month. Fewer than 4,000' to go.

I rode again today about 6.5 miles.. my legs have been hurting last few rides.. I'm going to try to press on.

distance 165 miles elevation ??? who knows having strava issues with elevation strava says ~11,000ft for the month.. it is likely higher however... but meh.

good work everyone that has been having a go.

Had tire troubles this morning. Time for new sealant. Still a beautiful morning for a ride. Temps in the 20's so the mud was all frozen.

Here is the bike that started it all for me 4yrs ago...Ď15 GT Zaskar 9r Sport.
Put a 120mm Manitou Minute Pro on and it could do everything, except handle the abuse...chainstay ended up snapping. GT honored frame warranty however said the did not have a frame so gave me the purchase price, and That is how I got Jeffsy! So blows my mind how after the Zaskar 25th anniversary GT stopped selling it in the US yet it is still available across the pond!

I Everested January today. This was my first Everest month since hitting that monthly elevation a few times in 2017. Thanks for the motivation to get out as often as possible, even if I've missed 1/3 of the days. This has been a good start to 2020. Great job to everyone participating in this thread and the challenge!

two rides today on 5~miles and one 4~ish miles.. then my rear hub f*cked itself..

    so.. there is that..

on the upside I still have a 2nd bike 2012 Giant Anthem so I can continue riding while i try to figure out what has gone wrong with the hub on my Trance =\

Flip the Switch: Ride EVERY DAY January-fts_29.png

I'm quite upset about my apparently borked rear hub however.. it is outside my skill-set to figure out.. hopefully my friend who is a bike mechanic can look at it this weekend.

an additional upside... I maybe getting the loan of a 2020 trance 29 in the near future as well... so that could be ok~

All kidding aside, Sgltrak what youíve accomplished this month with reduced days is nothing short of Amazing!! Last July to hit 7500m, it was a hard fought calculated effort for me in the end of doing reps up and down short 150ft elev trails without burning out to get in additional elevation and I didnít think I would make it. Now having learned of ĎEverestingí, Iíll have to give it a go this year!

Thanks Undescended! I am fortunate to live close to trails in an area with some good hills. There are a lot of riders around here much stronger than me. A friend of mine is currently sitting at 28,000' for January and he's only ridden 174 miles.

My ride this morning put me over the 30,000' mark, but oversleeping and a late start left me just shy of 300 miles for January. Should be pretty easy to hit that on tomorrow's ride.

Unless I can get out again this afternoon when it warms up, my January will end with 20 rides. This is my best January ever for climbing (31,900') and my second best January for mileage (311).

Thanks to all who participated and pushed me to exceed my expectations. I enjoyed watching everyone's progress.

This has been fun all y'all.. finishing the month ~strong on a borrowed 2020 Trance 29 Pro2 as I seem to have blown up the rear hub of my beloved 2018 Trance advanced 2 =\ however.. the 27.5 trance is getting sorted and in the mean time look at this sexy beast ... honestly I wasn't sure if I was going to like this one.. sadly for my wallet I kinda LOVE it.. after a couple miles it feels really good *(except for the medieval torture device saddle and my hands can't take the thin stock grips for very long.)

Flip the Switch: Ride EVERY DAY January-fts_1_31.png

set a PR on a .5 mile segment by my house that I ride all the time including a couple "trying" runs on this 29er not really trying... sooo yes it seems to be faster than my 27.5 ..

FTS 20 of 31 days. I wanted to complete all 31 days but my kids took precedence the other 10 days lol. Iím still very happy with the results Iíve seen from all the riding I did do. I got stronger, more energy, and climbed mountains that I couldnít two months ago. I also really found out how much I really like technical descents. Speed is always fun, but picking lines and rolling down some really rough lines really excites me.

Well I had plans for a long road ride this morning but I wasn't feeling it so I logged a final 10mi to the gym and back, 31 of 31!

My mileages were based off google maps distance estimates so my numbers are pretty fuzzy but it looks like roughly 385.

Since I commute and run errands on my bike I pretty much ride everyday anyway, so nice work to everyone who shook up their daily routine a little more...especially for sub freezing predawn rides! I'm gonna see if I can keep it rolling through February. It'll be extra hard since it's a leap year

The wife being out with friends, I planned on a nice long and easy ride to finish out the month. However pushing through thaw butter in a 40deg light/steady rain is NOT what I had in mind! Mt Ararat was in my sights but will have to settle for Mt Gistola, where ever that is...

All grumpiness aside, I live for this sh1t! Kudos to us all for the gallant effort and the outstanding achievements of OneTrak, RoughMan, and the SqueakMeister!!!! ( just call me the BallSack)

Yeah, I will definitely post it up next year. I will be taking Feb off from riding every day, but might post up another challenge later in the year.

Without this challenge, and the social aspect of this post, which were all fantastic and very supportive, I never would've thought I could find time to ride that much. I remember FTS 23 when I was out the door before 5 AM. Dark, cold, and slightly raining. I thought to myself, "WTF am I doing???" ... then I remembered this post and thought, "How bad will it sucks to have to post you missed a day?" LOL, that was all the motivation I needed right there to get it done!

Great job to all who went 31/31 and also to do those who just used the challenge for extra motivation to ride!

Super good job everyone here.. even those of us that didn't quite make everyday.. I didn't a couple days because it was raining and windy AF at the start of Jan.. however the total rides for Jan 2020 ended up at 33 due to a few days I went on multiple different rides..

all told 190~ miles which while not that high, as you see much higher than any point since joining strava by a pretty good margin.

My legs are demanding a bit of time off however.. last few days have been rough... weather has been pretty amazing this week however mid 70s Socal isn't without some advantages I guess. of course in the summer it will be 90~100degrees at points and pretty miserable to ride in at points..but oh well. Any weather you don't have to shovel off your drive way is ok with me I guess to some extent.

I did not get to ride everyday, but Jan was the best month on a mnt I have had in my life, and if everesting is climbing the most elevation you ever have Jan was also my Everest at 16,525 Did I say I have only been doing this for 6 months?

I think one month to Everest would be a great challenge this fall. You get one month to climb the 29 thousand feet.

Since Iíve only been riding since August this thread was great motivation for me. It really pushed me to ride more and try out things I otherwise wouldnít have.

Yep, it's hard to stop when you have momentum built up from consecutive days...
