New question here. Components, Components, Components!

Hey Guys, I have been reading these boards religiously for the past year or so, and I have learned a TON. But component lines still confuse me. Like XT vs. LX!? Or Race Face Vs. Bontrager. I would like to see if you guys could list what you think is better or best bang for the buck. I think this would help me pick a new bike for next year rather then saying, "What about the Giant TX1 VS. Trek Top Fuel 8." I know theres a lot of personal opinions on components, and I want to hear them.

    EXAMPLE:

"I like SRAM better than Shimano because..."

    Or...

    "1. LX
    2. XT"

I would like to hear about shifters, derailleurs, cassettes, cranks and anything else you want to share would be GREAT!

As to your question about the ranking of Shimano's LX, XT, etc it's something like this
    1. XTR
    2. Deore XT
    3. SLX
    4. Deore LX
    5. Deore
    6. Alivio
    (others below this, too)

Then there's the heavier duty mtb stuff, Saint higher up the ladder than Hone

I run Shimano XT mostly, good value, good performance, fairly lightweight. There's a bit of trickle-down going down the ladder always, too. LX is very good stuff, don't know much about their new SLX and it's positioning.

As to Race Face vs Bontrager, well those are names of different companies offering many different components, so you'd have to be more specific there.

^ SLX is replacing the Deore LX line.

I agree with Strafer, X9 drivetrain XT cranks and cassettes are best for your buck
