I just toasted my Vistalite Nebula 5...left it on the bike on a rought trail ride - oops. It was pretty bright (not like me - eh?).

The Vistalite Total Eclipse is a good tail light for the money and really bright with fresh batteries.

Cateye also makes a new model (TL1000 or something like that) that is really freaking bright. The main drawback is the cost as all Cateye tail lights are over priced...

Check out the Trek Disco Inferno. May not be as bright as that ten LED Cateye, but you will be noticed. Expensive? Bikeman has the Cateye for less than $30.

    2nd the Total Eclipse

Bought the VistaLite Total Eclipse this year... couldn't be happier. I leave in the "on" position (not pulse or flash) all the time when I do night rides and have been getting close to the rated burn time of 30 hours on a pair of AAA batteries. It is really, really bright and an excellent buy (most places sell it for $15-20.

I agree with the niterider taillight. It's expensive and bulky with all the required parts, but it's the best for safety. I've had my students see my flashing light from 3/4 mile away on a busy road. It's an incredible light!

I also don't suggest putting the rear light on the steady position. I only use the pulse or flash. The pulsing light is what separates us from other vehicles on the road. If it's a steady light, it's too easy to dismiss us as just another motorized vehicle.

Turns out the Nebula 5 is still usable...just the seat post mount broke. I put the belt clip back on and clipped it to my pack.
Also picked up a Total Eclipse for the seat post, with both of them on super blinkie mode I certainly hope I'm visible to the motorized terrors (I mean cars)...
