Bike Paint Stripping - One layer but not the other?

So my bike got stolen recently, and the jacka** who stole it spray painted my Monocog black. I rather liked the stock paint...

Anyway, is there a way to strip the spraypaint back to the original paint without jacking up the original? Or am I better off to just go ahead and get it painted/powdercoated anyway?

Consider leaving at is.....It may help prevent another theft, cause the bike doesn't look as good.

If you're slow and careful enough, you can sand off the new paint without destroying the old underneath. Then clear coat over.

But for the time that will take, you are better off getting it chemically stripped and powder coated as close to the original as you can.

I'll probably be leaving it as is until winter is over, then get it powdercoated white. Pure white bikes just look SO good...

Besides, now it looks junky, so except for the hydraulic discs I'm about to throw on it, it'd take a discerning eye to make it a target.

You could carefully try laquer thinner. I was able to take spray paint off of a section of a bike frame without hurting the factory paint. I didn't do a whole frame though.
