Buying first MTN bike. Should I get outland 29er 2.0?

I have been looking for my first mountain bike for a while and came across this used 2011 Fuji Outnland 29er 2.0. Do think this is a good bike to get?

Also the guy says he won't go below $900 is that to much for this bike? He thinks its a 2012 but I'm pretty sure it's a 2011. He wants to meet up tonight.

Here is some bike info 2011 Outland 29er 2.0 vs 2012 Outland 29 2.0 - Mountain Bikes Comparison

$900? For a 2011? Did he ride it once and put it in his garage and keep it in pristine condition? It's got deore/alivio derailleurs, which you can probably find on a bike you can buy new for $900. I'm not saying it's no better than a $900 bike, but unless it's exactly the type of geometry, wheel size, etc. that you're looking for, that's a lot for a three year old used aluminum hardtail with those components.

If he's ridden it a decent amount, expect to have to replace housing, shift cables and chain, and you probably want to pay for a tune up unless you're confident in your ability to tune it up yourself. Brake pads may need replacing and he may not have ever serviced the front fork.

Depending on what kind of shape that bike is in, how little use it saw, and how suitable it is for you, the $900 may be reasonable, but at first glance that price seems high to me.

    Thanks for the advice.

It is actually a full suspension bike. The guy just got it tuned up and had a new chain put on it today. I'd just really hate to over pay for a bike because that is the top of my budget.

You're right, it is a full suspension, I missed that. If it has just been tuned up, and the shocks were maintained and taken care of, and the chain is new, the bike is like new, that is not a crazy price.

Bicycle Blue Book will help you some approximate values based on the bike's condition:

Well I just went and bought it. He accepted $800, still don't know if its a 2011 or 2012. Has the 2012 shock and frame but has the 2011 paint scheme and I think front forks. Whatever, its to late anyway. I own it now.

The url link you gave for the 2011/2012 comparison reveals the curved top tube frame brace which butts onto the top of the seat tube is not a feature of 2011 frames. But that curve bracing is found on 2012 Outland frames, as in the url link.

Also the down tubes shown have quite different contours at the headstem.
