it was a short ride today, weather app said it was 26 degrees so I dressed light, but according to my Jeep it was only 5 degrees outside. This would explain why my hands and face were so cold
    Enjoy the ride...

    1. Yes
    2. I think the rivers block access in the sumer, although there was a creek we forded, we generally have to wait until the river is frozen so we can access the glacier. In the summer there are jet-boat tours to the glacier, where the main draw is floating in the lake at the foot of the glacier, among the icebergs and edge of the glacier. In the winter, the lake is frozen over and the icebergs are frozen in place. The glacier still moves and calves in the winter, but at reduced rate and big sections are not floating off. Some caution still needs to be exercised.

This has been a spectacular year for fatbikes around here. The biggest challenge has been the frequent snowfall demanding frequent grooming. We have a dedicated crew of snowshoers around here who do a great job packing the trail so that the groomers can get through.

What 440" of snow over the course of one winter looks like, in a spot that's very protected from wind.

Another 30 or so inches and we won't be able to see where the cabin is. But we might be able to build a pretty sweet jump...

That can be even worse when it's on a slope. When 13 in Switzerland, I enjoyed skiing down the slope and over the huge boulders off to the side. Moderate to low speed over the top, and a gentle drop onto the sloped snow on the downhill side. One of my favourites was a 25' boulder with tons of snow around it; it was a breeze but felt impressive. (Actually, I think it was 25'. Judged by a 13 year old being 'tough' and going over the top.)

Only once on a new hill, one boulder turned out to be a farm cabin with people sitting on chairs under the downslope eves. "Bitte, Bitte!"
Crazy on this ship of fools...

A few pictures from my ride last night. Temps have been around 3C-6C for the past 3 days and we also got some rain so the snow went from powder to snow fight worthy. The crust is starting to melt but I was still able to ride without going through except in a few places.

I was also inspired by mikesee's picture of his tracks going over a fence. This fence is normaly higher than my bike and we can barely see it now.

I really hope some of our friends from down under post some snow pics to get us through the summer...though, I don't know if those climes even get that much snow...

winter is definitely over here in Central Ohio though ...we will get our usual tax day snow probably, but that is it

Beautiful Spring ride today but the crust is still not quite firm enough to head far off piste, had to stick to the trails.

Snow has started to slowly melt for the past 2 weeks but there is still some nice rides to do. We now have a nice crust everywhere with a bit of powder over it in some places. Overall, we have great riding conditions right now!

    From last Saturday.

Winter is damn near over here, it's 55 degrees in town in the afternoon, streets are dry, summer tires are back on, t-shirts are being worn...

But if you start early and go high, you can still get some good crust:

Last fatty ride of the season. Got some snow yesterday so I was "magically" sick today (don't worry I am all better now lol).

Not ideal but better than nothing. Few flooded areas closer to the river so had to backtrack a bunch but I was still happy to get out.

We still have over 90cm (3 foot) of snow left here and we got a nice little 10cm (4 inches) yesterday and another 5cm (2 inches) last night.

Here are some pictures of my last night ride.

Another picture from last night. I'm not sure how long I still have before I'm unable to ride the snow trails but I'm going out as often as possible until then!

    Yes sir!

Yesterday's riding conditions of what remains...not too shabby.

The volcanoes aren't as impressive this year.

    Thanks man,

I tell people that this is really the best time of the year to riding a fat bike. Usually they don't believe me.

A riding buddy of mine just got a fat bike and says that crust riding is comparable to riding Moab minus the heat.

It's been in the 50s and most of the snow was gone, even up high...until yesterday and it's been snowing above the city in the hills. This was some lumpy mashed potatoes stuff. Not impossible to pedal through...but impossible to go more than about 2mph at 160HR. Still fun to get just a little bit more fatbiking in.

As you can see, we still have a lot of snow left to melt. This is from my ride last night. I should be able to hit the singletracks in around 15 days at this rate. We're around 5 days late compared to what we have normally but we got more snow also this winter and spring came late.
