Loving the Johnny5’s even more with this ride in Topsham, Maine, too bad my Sun Race cassette wasn’t up to the task. I was actually able to stand up and power up the icy hills when other people with studded tires were losing traction on level ground.

Yes, it’s considered high desert. We usually get 12-14 in precipitation per year. Weather has been crazy over the last 5-10 years - this time last year I had 2 ft of snow on my roof.

Iron Horse Trail / John Wayne Pioneer Trail

Its a very long graded rails to trails path that goes through the longest pedestrian accessible tunnel in North America. The tracks were pulled up years ago.

After being very jealous of all these snow and ice photos it actually snowed here in the north of England yesterday morning, what's more - the sun came out So a short ride (13Km) up on to the local hill. It wasn't too cold, about -2C and I suppose 2-3cm of snow.

Rail trail Jim Thorpe, PA. Ice out and slush back, great day! Touristy spot but almost alone except cc skier and 1 walker. I won't forget the experience of feeling gushes of heat radiating off the rocks across the ice and all the sap warming up scenting the air.

Riding Steep Downhill on Snow and Ice

Downhill plus snow and ice sounds like a good idea, right!? More slipping and sliding. Also testing out the GoPro 7!

    Drift...
Last time I saw a 360 video, it was a periscope stream by a hobo in Texas pedalling his e-bike pulling his two dogs in a bike trailer.... Then I'd thought I'd seen everything - until he streamed driving along a bike path, to where it meets a road, then waits for an uber to drop off his hobo friend (with his leg in a full brace, out of hospital a few days ago), so he could load him into the trailer and take him off to live in the woods with him in his 2,000 gallon plastic water tank. The look on the uber driver's face was indescribable.

Unfortunately they end the stream before they leave the bike path and head down the hill into the forest. I really wanted to see that. But the camp rebuild to accommodate his friend was entertaining, as were the disco lights at night. Once the hobo-friend got hauled back out in that trailer to go to an appointment, there was no way he was going to return and have to go down that hill again. Now the friend's streams show the friend in his leg brace largely on a mobility scooter at Walmart hiding beside the store with sign saying "her lawyer was better".

I believe it was Xmas day that had him streaming from the veranda of a restaurant charging his batteries, when a woman going by (concerned that he was waiting to eat at a restaurant that wasn't opening that day) called out to him. He replied something to the effect of "I'm fine. I'm just stealing their electricity."

He has since driven his e-bike, with trailer & dogs & tools, to another city for work cleaning house flip job sites. Previously on a site, he said a neighbour came over to warn them about the hobo she'd seen in the backyard that morning. He explained it was him. She said no, another hobo. He said he plans to return to his tank in the woods, but while he can handle the wild boars (with his cans of mace), he's concerned for his two dogs with how many rattlesnakes he keeps encountering getting in there in the warm months.

You wouldn't believe his job idea he's looking for funding for.

His fixing his bike and trailer is mix of ingenuity and cringe.
Crazy on this ship of fools...

My bucksaw has been a quiver killer of sorts for me, but with last years lack of snow, I had questioned my need of a fat bike. This year has definitely reminded me that yes, yes I need a fat bike. My bad back says it must be FS.

It is in places around the Sussex area, the trails are for sure, not quite as solid as in the Spring though so breaking through fairly regularly. The last round of freezing rain has built up a pretty good layer. Heading to the Park tomorrow...

Fundy Park: Went to the Park today and the crust looked promising from a distance but I wasn't able to find any that was rideable. The trails are in great condition though.

Nice, we get some similar riding out in our inlet when the tide is out, ice chunks everywhere, but some decent riding.

not in as epic of places as you all get to ride, but we got a quick...and possibly the last...good snow here in Central Ohio, so I had to get out in it!!
My version of Heaven/Therapy/Happy Place etc...

It works well for me. It's about 90lbs of salt in a 40" sled. I drag it around on snowshoes. The base of the sled is 16-ish" wide, so makes a decent single-track path. My less experienced and balanced friend has a little trouble staying in the packed sweet-spot, but it's good practice for him, even if he does make a mess of the trails. ;-)

I'm thinking I might try something a little wider, like maybe a 26" diameter saucer with a tire on it for weight. Should make a nice little bobsled-type path... We'll see.

I'm in Ottawa, Canada. We actually just had the snowiest January on record, but that followed almost no snow in December so it's about average accumulation, overall.

Bracing ourselves for another dump tonight and tomorrow. Looks like working from home, where "home" equals "out on my snowshoes". ;-)

Nice! I'm in KW so we already have a decent well used groomed rail system here. But there's also a lot of not so used trails around I've thought about grooming myself. You see the odd fat bike track here and there but more so foot or game traffic.

We got an unusual amount of snow here on Southern Vancouver Island. So much that I missed work for the first time in 5 years. Since I was home I headed out on the Krampus to run some errands.

Sorry 1 person and a smartphone means no actual riding pics. The Krampus handled all, but the deepest and most drifted snow really well. The main challenge was the churned up slushy snow left by vehicles that forms channels/ruts. Getting out of those was entertaining.
    Safe riding,

Last weekend and until tuesday night our trails were nice and hard packed. It was like rolling on the highway.

Last night after getting a lot of fresh powder it was a bit more challenging.

Perfect timing as a riding buddy had just done a loop with the groomer and temps were getting colder.
Almost ran into a moose as well.
    Great Sunday afternoon .

Wish the hikers would not walk on the fresh path though

Got out further afield today. Cranked out ~40kms of 29+ SS goodness to get to a hike. Locked the bike up and did some sketchy slushy hiking and then rode back home. Always nice to avoid firing up the infernal combustion engine and get life done.

The nice thing about getting snow in an area that's not used to it is that you don't have to share the trails a whole lot.
