It means the world is ending. Because Tim Hewitt doesn't quit anything, and he's currently in a plane heading back to town.

That route is super compelling at first, as anyone that has passed the split can attest.

The only peeps I know that tried to push it through to Nikolai didn't make it. Ran out of ice and into lots of open water, and were too heavily emotionally invested (read: wasted) to backtrack. Ended up calling in a plane and getting plucked.

Yeah. Just hoping it's nothing serious, just wisely called it due to equipment failure, etc..

Tim doesn't need equipment. He's on foot, and he subsists on tree bark and the hopes and dreams of rookies.

He's only scratched once before when on foot, and he had started that race with pneumonia and still made it to Nikolai. He was also the only person to continue past McGrath another year, and still made it to Nome.

Rest assured that if Tim has scratched, the world as we know it has ended. Or he's lost at least one foot to a rabid wolverine.

I hadn't considered any of that. I was thinking the track might have been chewed up and he was going alternate to get to the straight.

    From ITI news

Racers bivi in this race. This means they are getting off the trail and getting their sleeping bag out and getting a few hours of rest alongside the trail. The tracker color goes to a faded lighter color. This means they have been stopped for more than 30 minutes.

But when does that mean the tracker has stopped reporting...

As seen under the indivual's Tracker-full, when they pause along the trail and the tracker is reporting, it displays such with a Pause symbol (and a Move when they resume). Sometimes the trackpoints, Pauses and Moves show a selection of points as they setup camp.

When the tracker stops reporting - reason unknown - we see it go to fade and stay that way with just a final blue diamond for its last trackpoint or the athlete initials icon, without the Pause symbol - situation unknown.

An example of moving around some, with Pauses, Moves and trackpoints.

    Iditarod Trail Invitational 2019 - Feb 24-tracker-logs-stops.jpg

    another showing tracking recognizing Pauses

    Iditarod Trail Invitational 2019 - Feb 24-2019-02-27-17.21-iti-logging-pauses.jpg

And with Sean Brown, the last update signal from the tracker was "Moved". Icon on map faded, so in this case faded ~= no signal? Can't rely upon faded meaning 'resting/bivi', especially when its for hours.

    Iditarod Trail Invitational 2019 - Feb 24-2019-02-27-faded-icon-last-update-signal-saying-moved.jpg

So when the Tracker-full doesn't show a Pause, faded icon means...

In the real-time systems I build, I handle signals of same-data/no-change and signal-absent as rather different events. Tracking seems quite capable of getting the same location repeated and recognizing Paused. There should be something that recognizes that there's been no position update for X minutes and declares a Missing-Signal-Situation-Unknown, with an escalating error severity over an appropriate time, with an appropriate display of such, and the ability to flag a device as not-functioning athlete situation known.

The others didn't follow. He came back, at good speeds by times, and he's heading down the trail at 7 mph. So a good chance he's not injured, nor exhausted and can mentally shake the detour off. It might have worked out if he was only going to get around to the straight.

A three hour and forty minute detour back to where you were is not fun, but he's carrying on and at least he's avoided

I'm used to the first one, but this one is a lot more intuitive to use, especially when going for other options.

I wonder if Troy is going to find a trail on the southern route or not. The trapper "Dan" out of Takotna runs a trapline to a little past the Dishna River, so there could be trail that far, but I would expect trapping season is over now. If there is no trail he could have a long wait. I hope he brought lots of food!

Last year there was a lot of traffic from McGrath to Shageluk before the dog race, but I have no idea if that is normal or not.

    • Petr Ineman is past Takotna, showing ~14 miles to Ophir.
    • John Logar shows as shopped at Ophir.
    • Troy Szczurkowski shows as stopped again, after making what looks like agognizing progress on the south leg on the Ophir to Tolstoi leg. If I'm reading the trackpoints correctly, around five hours to go from Route mile 346.3 to Route mile 347.8. Throw & wade?

    • John Logar is just reaching that south leg. Showing 16.4 miles to Tolstoi.
    • Petr Ineman is showing as out of Ophir heading NW, with 22.8 miles to Tolstoi.
    • Jose Bermudez's tracker decided he was no longer in McGrath, seven trackpoints shy of Ophir. He's out of Ophir also showing 22.8 miles to Tolstoi.

This is interesting. Some of those in the ITI19 are getting a rather attractive green thing that looks like a tent. It seems to be replacing the Pause. Only the green-tent-thing (unlike the Pause and other icons) won't tell you what it is. Oops. My bad. Nothing tells you what it is anymore.

    Iditarod Trail Invitational 2019 - Feb 24-new-tent-not-paused.jpg

    SB, gets a green-tent-thing too. He's been green-tent-thinging for over a day!

    Iditarod Trail Invitational 2019 - Feb 24-new-tent-over-day.jpg

Except, the pause is still being used. No tent for you.

    Iditarod Trail Invitational 2019 - Feb 24-no-tent-you.jpg

Except some don't even get a pause..., let alone a nice new green-tent-thing.

    Iditarod Trail Invitational 2019 - Feb 24-no-tent-no-pause.jpg

    Iditarod Trail Invitational 2019 - Feb 24-no-tent-no-pause.jpg

    o.k.
Three at the same spot. All over a half hour and over an hour. Two are paused, one in the middle for duration is just... unknown? And DF doesn't get an icon?

    Iditarod Trail Invitational 2019 - Feb 24-paused-no-pause-paused-bear-creek.jpg

But the green-tent-thing looks really really good.

Doesn't yet help us tell who is stopped/paused/bivied vs. no-longer-tracking.

    • Troy Szczurkowski & John Logar are at Pause at Tolstoi.
    • Jose Bermudez has Pause beside the trail by the bottom of the south leg to Tolstoi, with 12.2 miles to Tolstoi.
    • Petr Ineman still has the little green-tent-thing beside the trail at the top of that south leg, showing 16.4 miles to Tolstoi.
    • A number showing at McGrath.
    • Piotr Chadovich on the move to McGrath, just about at the fork to the south jog to the road, showing 29.2 miles to McGrath.
    • A number showing at Nikolai.
    • Dmitry Lysenko and Beat Jegerlehner are moving at 3.6 miles and 4.2 miles out from Nikolai.
    • Jan Francke is moving around 3/4 of the way along the straight before the turn to the NE to Nikolai.
    • There's five showing at Bear Creek cabin.
    • A sixth is showing as part way in to the cabin. Over three hours, no green-tent-thing, no pause.
    • Approaching Bear Creek is Daryl Saari.
    • Stopped at the side approaching Bear Creek are: Pierre-Yves Couteau (5+ hours, Paused), Erick Basset (3+ hours, Paused) and Daniel Slater (4+ hours, green-tent-thing).
    • Two at Rohn, Paused.
    • And Sean Brown shows as jumped to and out of Puntilla Lake, but before the Hells's Gate turnoff, for 1 day and 12 hours. But at least they gave him the green-tent-thing icon.

Florian Reiterberger heading for McGrath didn't take the jog to the south to the road. Could be that the Iditarod Dog Race trail groomers have been through.

Looks like Tory Szczurkowski and John Logar are still holed up at Tolstoi. Jose Bermudez and Petr Ineman show as soon to join them.

Hopefully the Iditarod Dog Race people will be through there soon and clear them a trail to ride.

Most everyone else appears to be out on the trail to McGrath or Nikolai.

Asbjorn Skjoth Brunn showing on the leg in to Bear Creek cabin and Donald Kate showing at the cabin, have been upgraded to a green-tent-thing icon. The other three there only got Paused. I haven't checked if anyone else on the course got upgraded.

    Or not.
Florian cut south to intercept the jog to the south to the road.

Jose Bermudez & Petr Ineman joined Troy Szczurkowski & John Logar in Tolstoi. Petr shows as Paused; he didn't get his green-tent-thing back. Yet.

Kim Riggs & Missy Schwarz are out of McGrath, onward to Takotna.

My Bad. He didn't cut south, he reversed course, then came down the south track towards the road.

Since then, two bikes followed the south jog. Two walking have started the original, one walking has started the south jog.

Steve Cannon started out from McGrath to Takotna.

Troy Szczurkowski moving in Tolstoi. Moved east back to the track and then a bit back up it.

Things were/are overcast, so I believe the dark let those sleeping sleep a bit longer.

    • Now we're seeing John Logar, Troy Szczurkowski, Jose Bermudez and Petr Ineman all on the move between Tolstoi and Moose Creek.
    • Kim Riggs & Missy Schwarz show as still in Ophir.
    • Steve Cannon is moving out of Takotna.
    • Some are waiting in McGrath.
    • On the south leg/road into McGrath are Beat Jegerlehner, Dmitry Lysenko and Jan Franke.
    • There's a group stiring out of Nikolai, with some still sitting there.
    • And Klaus Schweinberger (moving around 3 hours ago) is newly met up with Grant Maughan (moving over an hour ago), around Sullivan Creek past Bear Creek, both showing Paused.

    • John Logar, Troy Szczurkowski, Petr Ineman and Jose Bermudez are all moving and all past the halfway between Tolstoi and Moose Creek. Moving a lot faster than yesterday.
    • Kim Riggs and Missy Schwarz are moving, just at the top of the south leg of the Ophir to Tolstoi run.
    • Steve Cannon is almost at Ophir.
    • Jan Franke is on the road into McGrath, with eight others coming across from Nikolai.
    • Two showing in Nikolai.
    • Sean Brown's tracker make a huge jump to near the end of the straight that's between Rohn and Nikolai. He's made the turn and is heading in to Nikolai.
    • Grant Maughan isn't too far behind him, moving on the straight, showing 12.6 to Nikolai.
    • Klaus Schweinberger is also moving on the straight, showing 18 miles to Nikolai.

I wonder how the trail is holding up in these warm temps? Crazy that people are probably out riding in T-shirts or similar (pushing/riding that much weight makes it easy to strip off that far to avoid sweating).

When there is a trail, some melt then freeze can help pack it down. But I have no idea what they're seeing. I note that everyone in the Ophir to Moose Creek area had much faster mph tracked today. I suspect the dog race groomers have been through. Although if not, at least those coming behind the leaders will have some kind of trail to follow. Likely some info on the ITI news page at some point.

On a comfortably warm Saturday in the urban comfort of Alaska’s largest city, the stars of the legendary Iditarod Trail staged their annual sled dog show for the cameras, the commentators, the tourists and the fans of what has come to be called The Last Great Race.

Almost 400 miles to the north on the far side of the Alaska Range mountains in the cold, dark heart of the 49th state, unnoticed by almost everyone, four fat-tired cyclist were at the same time on the trail and engaged in a full on battle with Mother Nature.

Snow had slammed shut the 80 miles of trail between the ghost towns of Ophir and Iditarod, once booming gold mining communities in the “Inland Empire” of the Alaska Territory.

The leaders in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race were into and out of the Interior village of Nikolai on Tuesday morning almost two hours ahead of the pace of the record race of 2016, but there was trouble ahead.

A hundred miles up the trail to the west beyond the Kuskokwim River community of McGrath and the ghost town of Ophir, Mother Nature was hammering the low-lying Beaver Mountains and the desolate lowlands of the old Iditarod mining district of Alaska’s Inland Empire with wind, snow and blowing snow.

Along the trail there Tuesday, four fat-tired cyclists at the front of the Iditarod Trail Invitational (ITI) were holed up in the ghost town of Iditarod, having spent about eight hours Monday slogging along a blown-in trail to cover but 15 miles from a public-use cabin near Moose Creek to the Iditarod checkpoint.
